91X Morning Show...is over

It's not loading anything. Is that just my computer? I'm getting a blank page.
Same here...why would they go to a station that caters to a younger demo? Regardless, I'll miss the show. Hopefully 98-7 in LA will pick them up. Another weird thing happened when I heard from someone at the station, that they are hiring for a bunch of weekend gigs...

HERE'S THE LATEST, WHAT DO YOU ALL MAKE OF IT:

An Open Letter To The 91X Community

Dear Friends,

As you may already know, Friday May 7th, 2010 marked the final broadcast of “The 91X Morning Show w/ Mat Diablo”. Fans of the show have (of course) reached out to us on all platforms, asking the most obvious question:

“What the F%&! happened?”

First off, I apologize for not addressing this sooner. Friday was a hard day for everyone at 91X. Letting someone go from their job is never easy…three people whom you respect, appreciate, even consider friends? Unimaginable.

On April 7, 2008, we launched “The 91X Morning Show” with the express purpose of offering an alternative to traditional morning radio. No phony puker DJs, no cackling bimbos, no preaching, no pretense. Just smart, savvy, dedicated people on a mission to entertain San Diego. And to some extent, we really succeeded. For over two years Mat, Carlos, & Sammi worked hard, played hard and made great strides in our quest to re-write the rules of morning radio.

Fast forward to May 2010. 91X is still locally and independently owned, still fighting the good fight, still competing in a town with dozens of fine radio stations. All these options mean great things for the listener – but it also means a lot of broadcasters, all vying for the same audience.

The good news is that, for the most part, 91X is succeeding within this crowded radio landscape. While I would never discount the efforts of Mat, Carlos & Sammi; a very tough decision had to be made in the best interest of 91X’s future.

That decision was made last week and we severed ties with “The 91X Morning Show w/ Mat Diablo”. To be fair, this didn’t just “happen”. We all worked very hard for a very long time to grow the show, develop it, and make it as successful as possible. At the end of the day, the station needed to go in a different direction. No pointing fingers, no laying blame - things just simply didn’t work out.

I don’t expect you to agree with this decision, or the rationale, or to stop being upset about our friends’ departure. I can only hope you understand that all we want is the best for this magnificent town of ours and to make 91X the very best it can possibly be. Just like any other team, sometimes we come out on top. And sometimes we have to go back into the clubhouse and re-think our game strategy.

91X has managed to survive and thrive here for over 27 years by constantly evolving and adapting to change. Our number one priority will always be to do the greatest amount of service to the greatest amount of people. Over the next few weeks, we will begin working on the opening paragraph of the next chapter in the long & storied history of mornings on 91X.

Thank you for listening to 91X – past, present and future.

91X Program Director

1. I sincerely doubt the DSC will be on 91X. Diablo and crew probably cost, what, 10% max of what the DSC cost? Secondly, the demo for 91X is considerably different from the demo on 101.5, and I really don't think the DSC would be willing, at this point, to re-tool their show and make it marketable to the younger demographic they'd be after.

2. I have a lot of respect for Capone posting that letter. Most radio stations out there don't do any kind of formal announcement when they fire someone. Hell, did Cantore even get a formal goodbye from 91X? What he wrote about the morning crew was highly complementary. The letter KGB posted regarding the DSC's departure was, as I recall, basically offering up the excuse that they wanted too much money. The goodbye to Mikey from Rock 105 alluded to him either wanting way too much money or being a total jerkoff, or some combination thereof. Nothing of the sort in this letter--it reads like something written sincerely, and it basically says that a business decision was made. Not that Diablo was a jerkoff or that he wanted to double his salary, just that a business decision was made to go in a different direction.

3. I'm still really bummed over losing the 91X morning show. I listened to a Muse CD on my way into work (this one's for you, Diablo, since I know you read this and I know you're a huge Muse fan), but Knights of Cydonia wasn't quite the same without Diablo singing the falsetto part after the song ended. I'm cautiously optimistic, based on Capone's letter, that 91X has something up their sleeve here, and there's a plan in place. Who knows, I may even give the next morning show a shot. Seriously, what else am I going to listen to? Mikey's "Happy Time Jesus Hour" garbage?

That said, if Diablo, Sammi and Carlos end up on another station in San Diego, no offense 91X, but I'm gonna be listening to them in the morning regardless of what station they land on. Personally, I think Z90 would be a perfect fit for them. Diablo could show off his mad rapping skills.

...just kidding.

Z90 is a sister station of 91X so that wouldn't happen. Diablo and Co. doesn't have many options as 94/9 has already invested lots into Mikey and it's paying off for their ratings and Rock 105.3 has their recently tweaked morning drive taken care of (and I doubt Matt Diablo would work for Clear Channel anyways as everyone on 91X hates that company and for good reason) and those are all of San Diego's rock stations.

It's really hard to mix formats with distinct sounds like Matt Diablo (and Jeff and Jerr who have a distinct Hot AC sound) which is why it's hard to bounce back from these blows. Mikey was smart. He predicted what was to come and found the only other rock outlet in SD.

I don't know. Why did ampradio1037.com link to Sophie @ 103.7 for a year? An easy way to get publicity by starting rumors.

Besides that link isn't working right now. Maybe you're right... It's a long shot, but maybe.
