92.1 KFTW Staff fired

First, to clarify: It's KTFW (not KFTW.) And there's always confusion with this frequency since KXEZ 92.1/Farmersville covers the Dallas side, and plays/played a somewhat similar format. Most of us on the Dallas side who don't venture often to Cowtown have probably never heard KTFW.

For Debi Diaz, it's a double whammy...her husband Sam also lost his job at KTFW yesterday.

I've never been a fan of KTFW owner LKCM. It's an investment company who never owned radio stations before, and who has a board of directors full of borderline Gen-Y'ers who probably bought a station because they thought it would be "fun" and "cool." My favorite story about the place (The Ranch, specifically, a few years back) is, as I was told, the jocks weren't allowed to play any female country artists because the girlfriend of one of the Directors didn't like (or was jealous of) those female artists. ::)

IIRC, "The Ranch" is 95.9 FM. (Aren't its call letters KFWR?) But perhaps both 95.9 and 92.1 adopted the same moniker since they both had studios at Sundance Square. I listen very infrequently, mostly when 100.3 JACK FM or 91.7 KXT don't have anything good on and I don't feel like plugging in my iPod. ;D

I always recall 92.1 by its old calls, KCLE.

The Texas music format has very few women in it anyways.

That is one of the reasons it is a boring format.

There is a fair share of Miranda Lambert, Maren Morris, Kelly Willis, Kristen Kelly, Kimberly Kelly, and Sunny Sweeney played on the station.

Um.....I just checked and the past 20 songs were all by male artists. A sausage company should be the main sponsor.

From Debi Diaz's Facebook page-

Debi Diaz
Is unemployed... The entire 92.1 staff dismissed today. Third time in 4 years... This is getting really old....
Radio is unique because it is LIVE and LOCAL. So the owners get rid of the entire on-air staff, so that it sounds like an Ipod or a computer jukebox playing random songs from a hard drive, except it will have commercials. They have removed the characteristic that makes radio different from all other music delivery models.

Sushi is unique too. That doesn't mean everyone wants to eat raw fish.

What makes radio so popular is that it's cheap and easy. Air talent is an option.

Most anything unique about radio that I can think of is related in some way to the people who work in radio. DJ's, News, Weather, Sports & Traffic people, Talk Show hosts, etc.

All of those services are available in lots of other places. Unless you want a specific host.

Exactly, so why do I want to listen to radio when I can go elsewhere to get what I'm expecting from radio?

From what I see, it depends on the circumstance. People do whatever is cheapest and most convenient at the time. Not what has DJs or is the most unique. If the circumstances allow me to get traffic instantaneously from my phone vs. waiting 5 minutes on the radio, I probably use my phone. By the same token, fans of Rush or Sean will seek out Rush and Sean. That's a very different situation. But fans of certain genres of music or artists will get them from any place, regardless of radio hosts. Radio usage is not exclusive. Most people don't use radio to the exclusion of other devices, and vice versa. That's the reality in a multi media world.

Something tells me TheBigA is about to tell us about how blowing out an entire air staff is somehow good for the business...

I don't know about that. But when a station changes format, the air staff usually changes.

WOW! So many ppl "in the know" in one place too. Why aren't any of you running the show at any of the many stations in the FWD area?
