92.5 Austin is now Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel

I guess part of my hostility ;D toward this IPod is that there's no way I can get 104.9 where I live (Steck and MoPac) reliably, and 92.5 was a great repeater with a clear signal from home, up and down MoPac, into downtown. That, and the fact that if they were going to take it to oldies, they could have done a better job than then same old repeater radio crap.

But then again, none of these companies wants to invest a nickel in radio...they just want to run it as cheaply as possible. And they'll get back exactly what they're putting into it...nothing.

Too bad, radio used to be a good place to work.

You must have have a good day because I generally have issues with KBEY from Burnet fighting with KXXS out of Elgin. This normally stops when you get close to I-35 driving along 1431.

I can't pick it up in the Arboretum area, not at all on my walkman. But on my 8 track console lp am/fm stereo mid 1970's GE unit when hooked up to broken rabbit ears VHF/UHF antenna I can pick it up in mono stereo has too much interferrence. I hope their signal expands so I can pick it up on my walkman and my quadraphonic amp. I wish they would have flipped 104.9 or 98.9 to this format and made 92.5 there talk sports station. I can pick those up really well. I guess I have to live in Oak Hill to listen to this station

I can't put my finger on it, but something's missing on the ''True Oldies Channel.'' It's no KONO.

KONO doesn't play all the oldies like The True Oldies Channel. KONO today is different from KONO in 1990.

This station reminds me of flipping the dial in San Antonio when I was 10 you had 99.5 KISS 930 AM KOOL 101 KONO (formally KFAN) and KSMG Magic 105. 99.5 was just like Magic except they only played the 45 versions of the oldies. The Door's light my fire the 4 minute version, Temptations Papa was a rolling stone (edited again under 5 minutes) oh yeah the 4:25 minute version of Chicago's Beginnings.

I wish KJXK 102.7 Jack FM would flip to True Oldies it would make since. A handful of Jack-Fm's have already changed formats plus If I want Variety Hits in San Antonio I can pick up (on my Walkman) BOB-Fm 103.5 (the next major frequency I don't count 103.1 because of the lousy signal) unless the ratings for Jack do well on the South side Jack 102.7 is a waste of frequency. Plus KBPA is in the San Antonio Arbitron books. Just like WOAI is in the Austin books. 550's format is been around since 1986 and it is time for a change for KTSA due to the recent flip of Power 106.7 to FM talk.

KONO needs competition the last real competition for KONO died out in 1995 due to station buyouts and FCC regulations. If BMP wants a greater edge in San Antonio they need to flip 102.7 to True Oldies. If they really really want to boost ratings flip 550 KTSA to it and simulcast 102.7. Imagine 2 oldies stations 102.7/550 True Oldies and 101.1/860 KONO. :D

I dunno the other evening I could pick the station up on 360 and Great Hills trail and it came in pretty good up to the Domain but toady when I tried to listen it wasn't comming in up there or even in RR. They do need to boost the signal though KONO is a good station though I listen to KONO here on my Logitech Squeezebox and my computer Oldies 103 was similar to KONO I think KONO has gone more towards Classic Hits than Oldies.

Time marches on. Back in the 80s, those 50s hits were 30 years old. Today those 50s hits are 50 years old. The station needs to keep sliding forward since today's 25-54's group up with different music.

I'm 28 and I listen to the early 60's-80's

The problem is you're an anomaly. Most 20 and 30 somethings simply don't listen to very much 60's music. Although an oldies station will get a few listeners in that age group, it just won't get enough to make the advertisers happy. I'm in my mid-30's, and I listen to 60's music occasionally, too. However, it's an alternative to me and not what I'll tune in first.

Yeah well they don't just play 60's they play stuff from the 70's too like Doobie Brothers,BTO,Chicago,Santana,Kool And The Gang and I have a ton of friends that listen to that kind of stuff and 60's

Doesn't matter. You and your friends are a small subset of the demographic and not enough to make a difference in terms of revenue. For the vast majority of people your age, and mine for that matter, 60's, and even 70's, music makes them tune out. The numbers show time and again that oldies stations just don't get much of the 25-54 audience anymore. That's why they're either going away or becoming 70's, and even 80's, centered. You may disagree with the Arbitron findings, and no one will say they're perfect. They are, however, what we have, and they will continue to help dictate what's heard on the air unless and until something better comes along.

I know that's why Dallas/Ft. Worth,San Antonio,Phoenix,Los Angeles,Corpus,OKC,Denver,Honolulu and a ton of other cities and towns in the US have oldies stations is because hardly anyone is listening to the 60's and 70's

Please note that the ''Oldies" stations in New York, LA, Dallas and other major markets list themselves to Arbitron as ''Classic Hits'' as opposed to ''Oldies." KONO also lists itself as Classic Hits. Oldies may be in their positioning statement, but the format is Classic Hits.

Fred is correct, and, in an odd sense, you are, too. A say "in an odd sense" because you're correct without intending to be. With the possible exceptions of Corpus, Honolulu and Denver, all of the markets you've mentioned have dramatically scaled back their 60's music. Almost all of the 60's pop is gone with a few late 60's rock songs the only vestige of the old format. In other words, Dallas, San Antonio, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Oklahoma City have oldies stations that have jettisoned roughly 80% of their 60's product and replaced it with 70's and 80's. This is the norm; it's happening practically everywhere.

KONO doesn't play anything from the 80's they play Diana Ross,Jackson 5,Tony Orlando,Doobies,O'Jays,Righteous Brothers,Percy Sledge,Tom Jones,Billy Paul,Elvis,Marvin Gaye,Barry Manilow that's 60's and 70's which I consider to be Oldies. Classic Hits is 60's,70's and 80's like 107.7 The Hawk used to play but they played Classic Rock KLUV and KEARTH don't play stuff like Led Zeppelin,The Cars these are what I consider Classic Hits stations.

So, KONO doesn't play 80's. I stand corrected. For the most part, they don't play 60's either. They average 1-2 songs from the 60's each hour and roughly 15 songs an hour. In other words, KONO's playlist is more than 80% different than it was even 5 years ago! Most of the artists you mentioned had the majority of their hits 1970 or later. Also, of the two Elvis songs played today, both were from 1972. So, you're once again illustrating my point, which has been that oldies stations have dropped virtually all of their 60's product because it no longer has significant 25-54 appeal. 70's will still appeal to that audience because the over 40 crowd will still listen in large numbers and is, generally speaking, well off financially. Give it another 10-15 years, and the 70's product will be gone, too, unless ad agencies decide to start buying 55+!

Classic Hits is 60's,70's and 80's like 107.7 The Hawk used to play but they played Classic Rock KLUV and KEARTH don't play stuff like Led Zeppelin,The Cars these are what I consider Classic Hits stations.

No one said they did, and it doesn't matter how they're classified. The point remains that oldies stations aren't the same stations they were even a few years ago. They've had to make changes because their core audience has aged out of the money demo, and people in our age group who listen to 60's music are few and far between!

And KONO does play 60's not just 70's they also play The Box Tops,Turtles,The Association,Straberry Alarm Clock,Tommy James which had songs in both the 60's and 70's because I have a 1967 Billboard Cd with songs from them I didn't list them earlier cause I didn't know I needed to but yeah the ones I said before had songs in the 70's I don't know about Diana Ross and the Supremes though I think that's mainly 60's. But i've heard the same songs played on 92.5 as I hear on KONO. The "Classic Hits" stations I listen to like "The Eagle" in Houston for example play Led Zeppelin,The Cars,Foreigner,Def Leppard and some 80's like Duran Duran and soft Cell not Diana Ross or Tom Jones i've actually never heard them on The Eagle over there that's what I consider "Classic Hits" is what i'm getting at.

KONO is starting to play a limited amount of 80's material. I have heard "Who's Crying Now" from Journey; "Keep on Loving You" by REO Speedwagon and "Kiss on My List" by Hall & Oates recently on KONO.

dlf

Then they play some 80's on 92.5 here cause I heard Kiss On My List on them this afternoon
