93.1 Playing Rock Tonight

My reception report for 93.1... On a car radio the signal is almost like a local in Pleasant Hill, in Concord the signal wavers a little bit but still plenty listenable. I noticed the 93.1 signal is really good as it makes it over the East Bay Hills and only a few Sacramento stations can be heard over the hills (notably 102.5 KSFM and 92.5 KGBY). I was able to listen to it in North Oakland and Berkeley without much problem, except for the stereo part falling out a bit even with the 1st adjacent 93.3 KRZZ nearby. 92.9's signal is a mess in the Diablo Valley. 3 stations interfere with each other (92.9 KFSO, 92.9 KFGY, and 92.9 KOSO).

I don't know if it is just me, but I have a feeling that someone at CC is having a bit of fun against the members of Radio-Info. Especially if tomorrow they are doing another format? Today, it was an All Day ARMSTRONG & GETTY Marathon. CC is definately stunting 93.1, but has anyone ever heard of a FORMAT OF THE DAY Stunt in which they do different formats each day until the official launch? Let's see, Beautiful Music for Wednesday, 50's & 60's Doo Wop Oldies for Thursday, Classic Country Hits of the 70's & 80's for Friday, AAA for Saturday and Christmas Music for Sunday before its launch on Monday? Who Knows? I just have this feeling that someone at CC is teasing all of us at Radio-Info!

TALK 93.1 even pops up on the other website http://www.931hot.com
It would appear that ultimately www.classic931.com will be the site with KCLX as the calls.

1. Of all the web addresses that CC has registered with "931" in the mix, www.classic931.com is among the best for branding purposes. Talk931 works well too, but CC isn't about to compete with an FM in KFBK and KSTE's format arena. It could kill one or both stations leaving them worthless - the stations will need to move to FM some day, but CC isn't ready yet.

2. KCLX was (inadvertently labled) on their streaming player for a time yesterday, until the calls were switched to KHJQ as they still show at this writing. I believe someone mistakenly put them on too soon. This rumor has been part of the mill for some time.

3. CC likes to own a "wall of demos". All of their local stations skew more adult in target.

That is so true...

I'm voting for a Top 40 approach to Aternative....It will be great for the PPM later this year.

What was Entercom thinking?

Especially if the new 93.1 beats Entercom's New KBZC-106.5

KCLX is a front too... I think.

A friend of mine working in the market brought up something interesting today. Spanish Oldies "La Preciosa" maybe?

They own none of the Spanish-speaking demos. Think they'd want to?

Discuss...

CC does own La Preciosa KFSO 92.9 in Fresno, but if the station was going to be a
spanish Language format they would have started with it. IMPO it should be HOT AC to make up for the lost in Stockton , Manteca and all areas lost by KOSO. Like what MRK mentioned a ALTERNATIVE 40 format would be close enough to make up for the lose of KOSO.

Unfortunately...Stockton and Manteca are probably not even on the radar over on Ethan Way. Besides...they probably don't want compete with their own My92.5 let alone The Zone and the Buzz.

Stockton will just be along for the ride no matter what they do.

Simulcasting your AM talk station on FM is becoming kind of a big deal in quite a few markets like phoenix and SF and DC. I would guess this is maybe going to be a simulcast partner for KFBK... or KSTE...

Orrrr... FM sports is starting to happen as well - maybe they would launch an FM sports station. They could carry Fox Sports or Sporting News radio or whatever's still available there to be carried - it would be cost effective and probably be a nice compliment demographically to KFBK and KSTE.

KOSO 92.9 covers Manteca just fine. Stockton is the big loser in all of this.
Absolutely right! Stockton, Lodi And Galt are the losers. There are MANY Stockton KOSO listeners who are peeved!

Interesting though....B93.1 numbers were pretty low in Stockton the last couple of years. You could blame the signal for that. It was one of the stronger signals in the Stockton market. This is a market were few stations that put even 70 db (3.16 mv city grade) over the entire city. The only commercial FMs left that put a city grade signal over the entire city of Stockton are...

KJOY, KQOD, KWIN, KSTN-FM, KHKK and KATM.

Non-Coms..

KUOP, KXPR and KYCC

If you look at Longley and Rice, the addtional below put at least 64 or 65 over most of the city.

KMIX, KHOP, KTTA, KHJQ

Non-Coms..

KLRS and KYKL.

Next on the Stockton chopping block is KXPR 88.9 who is trying to move to Sloughhouse after the post digital transition..(no need to protect KVIE 6 at that point). They want to reach the fairly affluant northeast Sacramento suburbs better. The application is still pending approval.

Tracy is well served by the new 92.9 signal. The maps don't tell the real story! 93.1 is going to be in HD if it isn't already! 93.1 reaches the Marin County Fairgrounds quite nicely as well.

Looks like their calls are going to be KCLX.  Although there isn't a stream available, their online player says "KCLX" on the title bar.

I've often wondered how is it that a station chooses its call letters.

Specifically, why those above others?  Mathematically speaking there are 26^3 = 17,576 choices.  (3 letters after the 1st K.)  What makes 1 set better than another among the unclaimed?

There's a KBLX in the Bay Area at 102.9FM.  It plays soft R&B.  I've noticed that from town to town the FM dial is laid out in a predictable form, e.g., classical and jazz towards the low 90's, classic rock in the upper 90's, hip hop in the 100's.  (Does that sound like a weather forecast?)

I've often wondered if there's something predictable with call letters, some secret code worth knowing about.  Why wouldn't KBLX of one market be like KCLX in another?  (Or KDLX, for someone wondering what DeLuXe thing to have for lunch?)

As I see KCLX, I'm trying to make sense of it.  If you saw my reply in the other thread, I see several things, e.g.,
1.  KCL + X, meaning we put the X in KCL=Potassium Chloride of medicine,
or our music puts in the X and cures you?

2.  KC + LX, as in KC's Licks,
whether KC is he of the Sunshine Band
or Casey Kasem

3.  Something to say all at once.  If there's K-Hits elsewhere, then KCLX is either
K Clocks or K-Clicks.

Is it just random, pick a set of letters?
Or can it be done strategically, especially for marketing/promotions purposes?

O.K. I'll bite, Regarding number 3 above, since the name of the station is "Classic 93.1"....perhaps KCLX is supposed to represent "Classics".
