Just because something was a stiff in terms of sales when it first came out 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago, I don't know how it can automatically be assumed that people wouldn't enjoy listening to it now.

EXTREMELY true. Case in point: "What I Like About You" by the Romantics.

But, many songs like that were more of the videos played on M-TV, which is how they got their exposure and, thus their continued popularity. Only a fool would stick strictly to Billboard for what was a "hit" in the 80's...radio fragmentation led to many hits that weren't necessarily big chart toppers, unlike the 60's...when the chart meant everything.
Three cases in point: "Stand or Fall" by The Fixx(Which was played on STAR 107.9's 80s Alternative show "The Deep End"), "Don't Pay The Ferryman" by Chris DeBurgh, and "Why Me?" by Planet P. All three weren't chart hits, but more MTV faves, back when MTV played videos instead of these ridiculously fake "Reality" shows.

@carolinaradio.... I don't think CC is deliberately older leaning or more "rock leaning" than CBS stations. Look at the markets. Cleveland, Minneapolis, Seattle... "rock towns". I would include Pittsburgh but 3WS is an abomination of what it once was. Certainly not an "oldies" station by any stretch or definition.

For KJR to minimize it's heritage, ie call letters, is stupid. WMJI did that years ago and failed. Brought them back a few years ago and rightly so. And with PPM call letters really have no impact... so why bother taking KJR's away?

Regarding the format, rating, etc.... In WMJI's case, having worked there for six years 94-00, regarding it's juice in the market, it's all... repeat ALL... due to longtime morning host John Lanigan and Jimmy Malone. Now, at one time WMJI's dayparts were as solid as AM drive. Sometimes stronger. But AM drive permeates throughout the day. In the last five years or so WMJI has waned in PM drive to being out of the Top 10 P25-54. Middays barely Top 5. But, Lanigan is still King of Cleveland radio. Lanigan in the market since 1970 (WGAR) when he took over for Imus who went to WNBC. Joined WMJI 1985 after a brief stint in Tampa. Lanigan was teamed with Malone about '89 along with newsman John Webster. Webster exited about '99/00. Five Marconi's and R&R Large Market Station/Personality award and never below #2 P25-54 in AM drive since 1998.... Lanigan is Cleveland's AM king. Word is WMJI (Lanigan) covers the cluster's expense nut in just six months. Impressive. Lanigan due to retire soon. He's 68. Maybe 2012. Malone and Co (newsman Chip Kullick) most lilkely stay on and the station will be ok... for the short term.

WMJI programmed from 89-96 by former WMMS OM/PD John Gorman. Then WMJI night talent, and former WMMS staffer, Denny Sanders programmed WMJI from 96-2001. Sanders in the Rock Hall.

Yeah, I agree, those stations are fitting to the markets they're in. I guess what I'm noticing is there isn't as much 'new wave'/disco material as I tend to hear on the CBS classic hits stations that I've listened to the most (WOCL/Orlando and WRBQ/Tampa).
WOCL can push the envelope at times. These stations get more in to the Prince/Madonna/etc. 80s than the Clear Channel stations tend to.
WMJI is a carefully programmed station, no disputing that.

KJR may be due to the fact that Clear seems to want to really push the word "oldies." Same with KLOU, but that station has somewhat of an identity crisis lately.

WGRR in Cincinnati is one of my favorite classic hits stations. They have a rock flavor, as well.

Most here know I like the real oldies. Despite being 27, I grew up on Oldies B97. I know real oldies are dead except for the weak 1270 WUCO has the mostly good True Oldies.
This 93.3 was terrible when I sampled it last night. All the same worn out 70s songs that are already on 103.9, 101.7, like 'China Grove'. Some QFM and Brew rock thrown in too. Their playlist is 538 songs according to their website which is weak.

For "classic hits", I'll use WNKO. The playlist seems bigger and the talent (seems VT anyway) seem better. C'mon Clear Channel! People who enjoy 50s/60s aint dead. Some like me were raised on them, the rest will retire and have money to spend on the advertiser's place of biz/service.

Appears 93.3 is now doing Premium Choice overnights, with Action Jackson of WMJI Cleveland and a list that seems to differ plenty from the local one.

I like WNKO as well. Live talent, and how radio is supposed to be. I look for them to become pretty popular in the rankings.
They are always Mentioning Licking County which is a big turn off for me. I am not accustomed to hearing weather for Newark, New Albany and Pataskala instead of Columbus. They are also talking about Licking County events which I could not care less for.

Yes, they have been serving this area for years, but as someone from the Northwest side who can pick the station up clear as a bell, it is really hard to listen beyond the music.

There are plenty of other stations that play the same music if you don't like their approach. They moved their city of license, but WNKO still is a Licking County station at heart. It's where their studios are, it's where their advertising is, etc. I think they've done an awful job trying to become a Columbus station, but it's fine with me since they're a good voice for this area (I live near Buckeye Lake).

Prediction: WLZT (under its old format) will be up in the new PPMs that come out later this week. An increase for the just-ditched format seems to be an unwritten law with format flips. Regardless a cume-heavy format like Oldies should sure prove PPM-friendly.

Turns out that the unwritten law sure held this time. 93.3's final (August) book as an AC was definitely an up one. 6+ AQH share went 4.0 -> 4.9. I'm sure they'll surpass that before long with the new market-exclusive Oldies format.

Not to worry, I guess. The new September PPM shows 93.3 up again, to 5.4 6+ AQH share. That's only .5 below WSNY, which IIRC is the closest they've ever been outside the Christmas season.

That's the least of Sunny's worries if they don't do something drastic with the music they play. They wait soooo long to do anything and with the current market fluctuations, they will be playing catch-up for some time.

Oldies WILL surpass them. They need to get on the stick and get some music adjustments and some talent that will make a difference. It's sad to see this happen, but this is just the beginning of a harsh downward move if they procrastinate.

As far as the station goes,I personally love it.I listened for five hours straight, last week.CC made a smart choice here.It was indeed time for a change from AC to a different format.

Actually WSNY does seem to have made a significant adjustment to their music mix, but not in the direction of oldies. Just the opposite, in fact -- they seem to be playing loads more currents and recurrents than before.

Good for NKO really. Don't sell out to Columbus like most other move in's.

Not everything has to be about Columbus, lol. Good for them to keep their community.

93.3 is now playing more oldies from the 60s and they have also phased out all songs from the 80s.
This via an inquire from the station..

Email from Mike of 93.3:
Hi, Artie!

Yes, we have. And even in casual listening you would notice. To be more true to our moniker "Motown Soul and Great Rock & Roll" we've added more Motown 60s especially. But Aretha 60s and lots more Beatles are in the mix as well. I haven't heard 1270 but I do know of their format. I've always thought FM had an upper hand over AM with music anyway, so I'm not sure what the impact would be on that station. Real oldies from the 50s and 60s were first heard on AM, so they should still do OK.

Sounds like 1270 is doing oldies the way people expect, without a lot of 70s. I think their audience will stay with them. Our station is more new-generation oldies, but it looks like the 80s are gone. I haven't heard any yet. I won't be on again until Saturday 10A to 3P to get a real feel of the music we're doing.

I'm still reeling from "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" so I can't wait to play some Marvin or Diana on Saturday!

Why Top 500 Songs Of All Time starting at 3:00 PM??

Now this from Mike:

Hey, Artie!

I just found out that we’re counting down the Top 500 Songs Of All Time starting at 3:00 PM this afternoon. I now have the details on my Web page. Plus I stuck in a preview of the first 40 songs. We’re still doing our regular weekend syndicated (AT40, etc.) and public affairs stuff, but all around that will be the Top 500. You’ll see some 80s titles in this…

What are the chances WTVN-AM announces it's new FM simulcast and Bob Conners replacements after the 1st of the year? Maybe on January 2nd?
