93.3 WGWD-FM

So we know and hread before that the new owners from Panama City's Magic Brocasting (WYOO) brought WGWD-FM Qunicy last month news. Still kind of quiet and nothing happening. When will we started hearing if WGWD-FM flip? Last time we hread from the old news on RadioInsight website. Do we have alot of mexican in Qunicy area? (tomato pickers) if we do maybe ESPN Deportes will be good? I know I just got offline between WGWD and ESPN Deportes talk stuff. By the way I hread WTCL AM-1580 is off the air last weekend when I was listren to AM dial.

Maybe the new owners of WGWD are figuring out how to make money with the current format?

Are there still tomato pickers in Quincy? I know up in south Georgia we lost a whole lot of tomatoes last year because the Georgia government had scared the Mexicans out of the state. Tomatoes just rotted on the vines. It was a sad sight.

Here's the gist of what I know about it..

I can tell you that the WGWD classic country music library was not a part of the sale, and the Panama City buyer said he wasn't interested in having a copy of it made. So, it will not be keeping the same format.

From what I've been told by a source more in the know of this, the flip will probably happen sometime in early April. They are having to make some technical changes and are installing some sort of new lines to accomodate part of the new programming. So there are engineering changes being made this month.

Most local folks are NOT happy to see this change at WGWD. It has been classic country since 1988. The seller is 74 and has had serious health issues lately, so he did not really WANT to sell.

I thought the Quincy mushroom farm closed, eliminating a lot of the labor-intensive jobs. I'm pretty certain the African-American community is larger than the Hispanic/Mexican population.
I'm sure Magic, having plunked down $1.2 million in cash, has some sort of business plan or objective. The rumor is some sort of talk format, but that's speculation, of course.

WTCL has been under an LMA for several years, and as I told poledo in a PM not too long ago, appears to be for sale. Their license renewal has been "accepted for filing" by the FCC, but the renewal has not been approved, so there may be some sort of red flag on it. The licensee, Metz, Inc., is comprised of an elderly couple and their son. The son appears to be running things (or not running them, if you see it that way.) He doesn't seem to respond to letters or phone calls. So
no telling what's going on with them.

(On a historical note, WTCL once upon a time was a country station. That library was donated to my Internet/wanna-be LPFM station, many with a "WSBP Chattahoochee, Fla." stamp on them.)

Chattahoochee is in a FM black hole. It seems like it would be really easy to place a translator there to serve Chattahoochee and Sneads. WTCL would have to feed a Chattahoochee translator of course. Not much money in the area... heck, the only grocery store in Chattahoochee closed it's doors a few months back, but they still have a whiskey store, 3 restaurants, a pawn shop and a couple drug stores among other local businesses.. but if they only have one strong signal and it's a local 250 watt translator it can't help but make a few bucks. Another option for Quincy would be a translator for 1230 AM. 1230's signal is horrible if it is even on the air. Quincy could be covered by one little translator.

I though the Mushroom farm closed too. We used to buy tons of Mushroom compost from that farm over here in Pensacola. Now the nursery claims they have no source. I would think they could hide some Magic Mushrooms in that farm and have a built in market at FSU and FAMU... but then again most hippies over there know where to get magic mushrooms for free. ;)

I used to listren to WWSD-AM 1230 back in the day when it was on the air. Tallahassee can pick it up as well. Is it still on the air?

You must have listened after I installed a Dap 310,( major upgrade they had no processing at the time) and put new tubes in the transmitter, man that was years ago. It actually sounded pretty good for a short period of time. I don't know if 1230 is still on or not, haven't been in that area in the past 10 years or so.

According to the FCC database, WWSD-AM 1230's license has been deleted. It's been off the air
since 2004 or so.

Alan, That sounds like a correct timeframe. I was in Tallahassee and Bainbridge in 2003, when I helped them. I got a call in 2004, asking if I'd come back and see if I could put the transmitter back on again, but I had moved over 200 miles away by then. I believe the lady who owned the station passed away not long after that.

Freddy,

I believe she did, and it just kind of fell apart after that. It did put a signal into Tallahassee
that was mainly receivable on car radios. They were calling it "Electric 1230" or something like that.

Since I seldom listen to AM radio these days, I didn't realize it had gone belly-up for good.

Where are you living now, Freddy?

They must have been broadcasting until mid 2011. WWSD has a facebook with posts through May of last year. Apparently they didn't file a license renewal.

WWSD was on the air at least within the last month...I was listening to it when I was at the WGWD tx site. I noticed that their license was now showing canceled though. I might try and ride by their next week.

As I was checking its seem like WYOO 101.1 and WFLA 100.7 has the same Talk promg Coast to Coast, and Kim Komando, Sean Hannity. But WYOO doesnt have Dave Ramsey,Rush,Gleen Beck (those are on the clear channel radio). I wonder what will WGWD/WYOO will do between WFLA-FM as WGWD made the flip to Talk Radio? It will be alittle good news those who listren to Talk Radio wants more than WFLA 100.7 does do alot of FSU Baseball and Basketball games.

Louis has a good point that I never think about when posting. With WFLA in Tallahassee, how could a second talk station on 93.3 be profitable? Didn't 106.1 try to do Talk opposite WFLA and fail? You also have the unique setup (at least for this part of the country) of FSU's NPR stations.... One does 24 hour news/talk and the other station does 24 hour Classical music. In essence Tallahassee already has two full time high power News Talk FMs. I think they also have a lower powered Sports Talk FM also. Can't compete to the South west or North west because Panama City and Dothan have established News Talk FMs on strong signals. Now if 93.3 could move North to mainly service Thomasville/Bainbridge... that would be a different story, but there are other stations in the way (93.1 and 93.5). I strongly believe the Classic Country format now on WGWD is the best choice for the station given it's location (best choice for listeners, not advertisers or revenue). I also remember that it is possible to move WGWD closer to Tallahassee, but I don't know what kind of power hit 93.3 would take in that move. Tallahassee's terrain sucks.

poledo,

You are correct about 106.1. They tried to mix shows like Neal Boortz along with an evening sports show, or something. I listened once for about five minutes and never tuned in again. It lasted for less than a year. And we do have sports on 97.9, like Louis mentioned - and on WNLS-1270 The Team.

One kind of talk radio that I wish was more popular is the non-political talk. The Kim Komando/Leo LaPorte/Gary Sullivan type of shows. A second-tier talk station will not be able to clear any of the CC programs with market exclusivity. But I really am not much of a talk radio fan, period. I can only take it in small doses. I have a radio in the kitchen that I mainly listen to WGWD's classic country on. Seldom tune it to anything else.

I doubt that WFLA will change much. I HAVE heard complaints about the regular programming on 100.7 being pre-empted for sports so much, which leads to..why don't they put more of that on 1270?

No. WFLA has Tampa, Orlando, Tallahassee, & Panama City. Nothing covers South Florida, Jacksonville, or Pensacola.

WWSD is indeed shut down. Tower and building are still there, but the gate is locked (property has a fence around the perimeter). Their sign is still up but the phone line is disconnected. Looked like the power meter was pulled also. Wonder how long it'll sit like that? It's in a rough part of town...I don't imagine it will take the copper thieves too long to get to it. Very sad...I always hate seeing radio stations get shut down.

How long has the station been dark?
