Here's the gist of what I know about it..
I can tell you that the WGWD classic country music library was not a part of the sale, and the Panama City buyer said he wasn't interested in having a copy of it made. So, it will not be keeping the same format.
From what I've been told by a source more in the know of this, the flip will probably happen sometime in early April. They are having to make some technical changes and are installing some sort of new lines to accomodate part of the new programming. So there are engineering changes being made this month.
Most local folks are NOT happy to see this change at WGWD. It has been classic country since 1988. The seller is 74 and has had serious health issues lately, so he did not really WANT to sell.
I thought the Quincy mushroom farm closed, eliminating a lot of the labor-intensive jobs. I'm pretty certain the African-American community is larger than the Hispanic/Mexican population.
I'm sure Magic, having plunked down $1.2 million in cash, has some sort of business plan or objective. The rumor is some sort of talk format, but that's speculation, of course.
WTCL has been under an LMA for several years, and as I told poledo in a PM not too long ago, appears to be for sale. Their license renewal has been "accepted for filing" by the FCC, but the renewal has not been approved, so there may be some sort of red flag on it. The licensee, Metz, Inc., is comprised of an elderly couple and their son. The son appears to be running things (or not running them, if you see it that way.) He doesn't seem to respond to letters or phone calls. So
no telling what's going on with them.
(On a historical note, WTCL once upon a time was a country station. That library was donated to my Internet/wanna-be LPFM station, many with a "WSBP Chattahoochee, Fla." stamp on them.)
