The only other AC service in town is the heritage AM WCRK and another FM from Bullsgap and it's on the bird most of the time. If you can't beat an AM station or an automated FM I guess I would have gone that way to.

I admit I'm out of touch, but does anyone know of a Spanish station, large or small market, making a profit in Tennessee? I'm not slamming this station's decision, I'm just curious about the profitability of this format in the Volunteer State.

I don't think anyone has had the guts to try it yet. I think it could be very profitable in the long term because any business that wants to reach out to the Spanish-only-speaking community now has a voice with which to do so.

It has been done by the same group. They owned 99.3 FM out of Jefferson City and it was spanish before they sold the station to Citadel. Also for a while WLIL-AM in lenoir City did some spanish programmimg in the evenings and Sunday's but has since droppped that. I believe there might be some stations around Nashville doing it to.

Also, WOCE 93.1 Benton, TN (serving the Cleveland, TN, Dalton, GA, and Chattanooga, TN area) has been on the air with a Spanish (Regional Mexican) format for about 4 years or so now. I have no idea how they are doing financially, but they must be doing ok, because they've stuck with it. The station has a decent signal into Dalton, Ga, which has a huge Hispanic population now due to all the carpet factories. (In fact, I'd say Dalton is probably at least 30 or 40 percent Hispanic now).

You'd probably be pretty close to right
Whitfield County was 22.1% while Dalton City was 40.2% (as of 2000 Census).
