94.3 Columbia switching?

The other site is talking about how Double O is preparing to switch 94.3 WWNQ to country. Tim Miller, GM and former meteorologist at WACH, registered MyCountry943.com this week.

94.3 wasn't doing well in the classic hits format. They probably now will go to country. I listened to them for a few minutes earlier this week and they sounded boring. There's several other stations that play the same music.

Probably better to go after WCOS and their top ratings. 94.3 only has a 1.3 rating in the last book. WCOS was 2nd in the market.

http://radioinsight.com/blog/netgnomes/52167/my-country-coming-to-columbia/

Didn't they already try that with 92.1...and, heck, even 94.3 before (with classic country)?

94.3 flipping would be no loss, really....doesn't Columbia have enough gold or gold-based formats?

If this is true, I really hope they spend some time on processing this station right. Right now it sounds really bad.

Country could work for 94.3 with the right personalities and name. However, they tried it before and it didn't work.

I don't know why Columbia radio is afraid to compete against WNOK-FM. You don't have to go CHR/Pop to compete against them. I feel that Double Radio O need to get younger by going Hot or modern AC. It makes sense and also I think the 25-44 female demo is being left out. They are going back and forth between WNOK, Steve-FM and B106.7.

You have got to be kidding me. If 92.1 couldn't put a dent in WCOS I don't think 94.3 would stand a chance either. Has for their ratings when they were classic country, a 1.6 or whatever they were they sure had a lot of people listening to them back then, do they now? If so then why would they think about switching. If I had a signal in Columbia strong or not and wanted to go country I would do it for myself and my station not for putting a dent in WCOS, there's a difference.

I think that 94.3 should deffinitely switch to modern AC. It is a good format and they would get a lot of listeners that way.

So let's see they want to do country again... Yeah we tried that and did not do to well with it so yeppers let's try it again so we can flush more money down the toilet... If it did not work the last time why even bother... Maybe DoubleO thinks they can have the same kind of success with 94.3 as they had for a few months with 92.1. With DoubleO not having any top hitting stations in Columbia why not try something different. Since they have took a little bit of the life out of B106 why not attack them from another front and do Rhythmic AC... If it was well programmed like I have said before it would take away listeners from both B and NOK and heck even some from some of the other urban stations that might be to sappy... I know country does well in Columbia, but unless you are going by WCOS it is pretty much all bets off for other contenders... CC1

@Radio2001, B106, WLTY and WNOK would lean Modern AC and neutralize the station, just as WLTY and B106 and WOMG leaned more 80's rock to dispatch "The Riverth".

As one acquaintence in the biz said, "Tim Miller's record of destroying stations is uninterrupted."

I disagree. I think WLTY and B106.7 would lean more 80s, but not WOMG (they only play 60s and 70s hits). WNOK does play modern AC songs (so does B106.7), but why go through rap music on WNOK and 70s/80s on B106.7 while you can have a Hot/Modern AC format that play today's adult pop hits without the rap and some 90s favorites.

It will be hard for anyone to dent WCOS these days. Country is the hot format right now. But that usually comes in cycles. I think the biggest hole right now is CHR against WNOK. Since they have very few local elements, all they really have going for them is heritage. When they moved J Rush to WCOS, that left them open to a generic CHR attack. Double O does not have the money to put local staff against them. But since WNOK is so generic, you wouldn't have to.

If I were Cumulus, once they come in I would take one of the Citadel stations and go against WNOK. I know Kiss does okay, but with so many urbans in town, maybe they can take that pretty good 103.1 signal and go CHR.

Couldn't have said it better myself. My question for Tim is this:

After you complete this flip, what will next week's flavor of the week be?

Cumulus doesn't make great sounding CHR's. The I branding CHR's for them aren't doing so hot ratings wise.

If not CHR, I know Cumulus has some pretty good country stations. Even if 94.3 goes country, that doesn't mean Cumulus wouldn't also take a stab at it.

I will be very interested to see when and if this happens. As of this morning, it was still 94.3 The River.

Instead of switching formats, why not work on the basics and try to be the best station in the market? Once the basics are there, then win with attention to detail. So far, they seem unable or unwilling to do either. Oh,they have cleaned up the processing some but it still needs some work.

And WOMG does play some 80's. Mostly at night, though, with Tom Kent.

I find the it interesting that WOMG doesn't play much 80s and still plays a lot of 60s (last time I listened, at least). Most classic hits stations have dumped most of the 60s and are mostly 70s and 80s now. Is this to protect B106.7 or something?

I'm curious as to which Cumulus country stations you think are pretty good. Can't think of any in SC....

Don't know much about Double O history or history in this market however, it sure seems they get the short end of the stick by people in the "Biz" on this board. I applied to do some voice work with them when I moved to town I met with Tim Miller and my vibe is he is a nice guy and has been around (just wish they would have been smart enough to hire me :)) In any event they seem to be the only group willing to make changes when something is not working, I don't see others in the market doing this and there are some real dogs that should make changes.

I have not heard them, but based on ratings Cumulus must have some decent country stations. WFMS in Indy usually does very well. And once they buy Citadel they will inherit a few good ones like Kicks in Memphis and of course they'll have two country stations in Nashville. They've had enough success with the format to give it a go in Columbia. That being said, I don't think they will.

They also have 99.5 The Wolf in Dallas which is pretty big. I can't speak for most of them, but WFMS is an awesome country station.
