94.3 is WIGX

Maybe mr. Salkowitz will turn it into a dance station, he has had very much success with them in his career, I beleive he worked for at least 6 of them, all gone now; but they were legendary. That Party 105 he was at is actually still around and i think the only one of his past stations that proved to be successful.

I'm inclined to agree that this isn't much of a change from the music they currently play, and what's worse is it exacerbates the problem that MJC already has, namely that if you like a song it plays there's a good chance you won't like the next song. Imagine Pearl Jam into Britney Spears into Nirvana into Mariah Carey. Trying to please everyone and in the end making no one happy for more than two minutes.

I think a nineties station that stuck to alternative would at least be an easily defined product and fill an unserved audience, but Barnstable probably wants to appeal to a female audience (despite already having that taken care of with KJOY).

Letter Jon Daniels e-mailed to the WMJC VIP Club yesterday:

An Open Letter from WMJC Program Director Jon Daniels
November 4, 2010

Dear Valued WMJC Listener:

As an 'MJC VIP, you've been loyal to 94.3 FM, and I want to share some exciting news directly with you - first.

Over the years, we've heard from many listeners about music and radio on Long Island. . . what's great about it, and what is missing from it. After talking to a lot of our listeners, and much thought and research, we're excited to introduce a brand new radio station, on 94.3 FM.

Tomorrow at 5pm, 94.3 FM will change to a new format. Please join us, as we embark on this new adventure, complete with a new name, new logo, and soon, some new voices too.

Welcome to The New 94-X! Playing Hit Music For Generation X - an entire generation's worth of hit music! From Green Day to Pearl Jam, from Destiny's Child to TLC, from INXS to C&C Music Factory, from Kelly Clarkson and Janet Jackson to Usher, from Bon Jovi to Jay-Z, and much more.

The New 94-X will have the largest music library - by far - of any Long Island radio station! With so many big hits, and so little repetition, we know you'll look forward to what we might play "next."

As an added bonus, starting this weekend, and through the holiday season, you'll enjoy non-stop music every weekend! No commercials, from Fridays at 5pm through Mondays at 5pm. Well over 1,000 songs in a row - a 3-day weekend every weekend!

We know you have many choices of radio stations to listen to on Long Island, and we value that you've chosen 94.3 FM. I hope you'll join us tomorrow at 5pm, and be a part of the revolution, as we introduce Long Island's hottest new radio station: The New 94-X!

Would I have any chance of picking up the station in Westchester County? Around here, all I can get are the NYC stations, several AC stations (ho-hum), a couple of bland classic rockers from CT, and some college stations (if I feel like nitpicking).

I am almost 21 years old and eagerly awaiting the '90's revolution. I stopped tuning in to 'PLJ when they picked up on the Lady Gaga and cut down on the late '90's alternapop. I would hope to hear some Hootie and The Blowfish, Sugar Ray, and yes even N'Sync or Limp Bizkit, simply because it's the music I grew up with and it has been missing from the airwaves for most of the past 7 years.

I'm not sure where in Westchester you are, but WKXP Kingston will probably prevent any reliable reception unless you are really close to the sound/east river.

BTW, they're counting down the years right now until launch. Did anyone catch the last full song before they started the countdown?

WMJC Last Songs Played:

Closing Time - Semisonic
The End of the World As We Know It - REM
Goodbye To You - Scandal
Time of Your Life - Green Day
Here's Where the Story Ends - The Sundays
In The End - Linkin Park

This montage is a lot like the montage before CBS-FM returned, with sound bites and song snippets from Billboard number ones from each year. And I know it's Billboard because for 1998 they skipped Iris which was never released as a single until it was too late.

Them noting music from 5-6 years ago as retro make me feel old :p

First song - House of Pain's Jump Around

Everlast is from Valley Stream so there might be a local-related reason for that.

I'm in White Plains - central Westchester County and close enough to LI Sound - and can pick up the station with a lot of antenna movement/placement; even then, not easy to get stereo reception; weaker than the signal on 92.7 FM from Garden City, NY, going back to the days of the late, lamented WLIR/WDRE (currently WQBU). Depends what type of radio is used & its placement within the house or (if using a walkman) where you're traveling.

There's always the "Listen Live" link online: http://www.mainstreamnetwork.com/listen/player.asp?station=wmjc-fm&

As of this posting, it's showing songs played since the format flipped at 5PM ET on Fri. 11/5/10.

EDIT: Last Played Songs goes back 12 hours from "current time". Thus as the currently playing song is added, the oldest one drops off the list.
From looking at their playlist, I couldn't help but notice that there are no currents that I can tell, although allot of the artists mentioned there have had new music released within the past year. There are some stations here where I live that do the same thing too. I'll never understand this kind of concept. You could play something by Pink, or Kelly Clarkson, or even John Mayer from five years ago for example, but nothing off their new or recent albums eventhough the CHR & Hot A/C stations do? These are current artists. I know most oldies and classic rock stations do the same thing, but you are limiting your playlist if you don't keep adding new material. I'm guessing next year they will drop off the music from the oldest year they play and then add an additional year on the other end.

I agree that many stations which do not play currents should do so. In most any format, there are current songs that fit.
This could help provide a link to the present that adds interest to the music mix.

In my opinion, the music is too "all over the place". They are trying to include too many genres of music, and all that is going to lead to is a lot of listeners changing stations when a genre they don't like comes on.

Honestly they lost me at song one, not my cuppa tea..... :p

I tend to agree. I think its going to be a station that could get pretty decent CUME, but the TSL could be real ugly. Its probably more of a 3rd or 4th preset type of station, that people will flip on and off.

Well I disagree. I think it's great that there is a station that plays it all from an era and not just a certain part of the era. Remember when the 80s stations were all the rage. Even 94.3 was one for a period of time. Almost all of these stations were "rockish". John Cougar Mellencamp into Huey Lewis into Dire Straits. I for one was like, hello? Where is the pop? Where is Michael Jackson, Madonna, Tina Turner, George Michael? No wonder that format died.

At least this station is playing ALL kinds of music from that time. GOOD FOR THEM! It would get very stale very fast if they just focused in on one type of music. I like the fact that you really don't know what's coming up next! Variety! Finally!!

Joel never worked with Party 105 on Long Island, he was program director of Jammin' 105 in New York City (which Clear Channel changed to Power 105 WWPR).
