94.3 WWNQ Stunting

Double O. I see you made a comment on the urbans. Curious of ur thoughts on Hot and the Beat

Well after listening to urbans way before Hot and The Beat, it was The Big DM I relied on. Granted they were Urban AC 75% of the time in the 90's, their transitions were damn nice. Ice Cold Radio was very top notch and fun to listen to. They used to have certain themed nights. (Ladies Choice, Reggae, Old School). Once Hot 103.9 signed on, DM added more hip-hop to the mix. Hot 103.9 sounded very fun and exciting. When The Beat signed on, and DM went full Urban AC, it was still interesting. DM would play classic R&B dance cuts from the 80's and 90's and had a Friday night house party mix show. But the "you know what" had already rolled downhill. Inner City's acquisition of 103.9 is what killed the great competition. They turned 103.9 from a Urban (sometimes CHuRban) powerhouse into a watered down, Atlanta wanna-be station. 103.9's audio processing now sounds horrible. As for 100.1 the beat, it sounds like a mess compared to what it used to. It sounds like they are trying to be how The Big DM used to be with the Urban AC Gold mixed in with some hip-hop. They play a lot of Jodeci, SWV, mixed in with today's rap. The problem is where is the old school hip-hop? Is R&B the only old school they play?

As for mixes, they are pretty much dead and gone on Hot and Beat. I turned in to 103.9 last Saturday night to hear them playing a sleepy slow jam! Their were no mixes on all night. At least they could pipe in Fatman Scoop's or Baka Boys mixshows.

If im still not making sense, just compare these 2 stations to Z93Jamz in Charleston and WYNN 106.3 in Florence. Those 2 stations have never lost their touch in my opinion. They know how to mix the right amount of R&B (new and old), with the right amount of hip-hop (new and old) and sound fresh and exciting.

Well I can tell u the Beat mixes on Saturday Nights from 8-10 with DJ Frosty and does a live mixing from the club from 10-midnight. Also the Frosty mixes evry night from 8-9 and the Beat mixes daily at noon (old skool hip hop mix) and 5:00. As u know the Big DM and Hot are owned by the same compnay so they can protect each other. The Beat is a solo urban, so they do not have to be as young as hot. Dont be suprised that some of those r&B records u hear test very very well. Also check out Dirt Law radio from midnight-2 on Saturdays (Sunday mornings) on the Beat, Great mixshow who just recently added Charlamagne the God as co-host

I know Colatown has two UAC's and two R/CHR's, but a good fun uptempo RAC would be a nice fit for DoubleO... TCB could adapt to a RAC, but I think if something like that were to happen that would put B in unchartered waters because all they have ever had to do is swing AC, Bright AC and to some extent HAC, but how well would they be able to pull off an AC sound trying to sound like a movin' type station... B is right for the picking and I would even say Fox and NOK are as well... I know I am thinking like an oddball, but I am sure it will be something that has already been tried or is already being done... One thing radio lacks now adays is anything creative... CC1

I agree with you Carroll. If not a Top 40 or Rhy Top 40, or even active rock, a Rhythmic AC would be fun. They tend to play some new and old dancy tracks without sounding ghetto.

I'm starting to wonder how long this Movie charade is gonna be going on? They air "Charlotte's Web, "A Night At The Museum", and "Cars". I'm assuming this Monday, but who knows.

programmers can muse all day. i believe that double o will be looking for a format that can make money and hire salespeople who understand the format. they will be starting from nothing. the power bill comes every month. at least you make minimum wage at mcdonalds. is there a format available that a new salesperson can live the life they are used to in trying economic times? are there expericenced sales managers that can create packages that will benefit a new advertiser along with programming exciting the sales base? i am thinking not, but i know nothing.

Living a life their use to is a myth, if you still have some comfort in your life and still have a job and can pay most of your bills count yourself very lucky. Right now life is hard and money is very tight. Even if you take a pay cut or a lesser job it's better than no job at all. The worst thing a person can do right now is think their worth more than what can be afforded right now. Broadcasting has a lot of really good talanted people but how much can today's ecnomic business pay for good talant, not as much as it use to if it wants to keep going.

When HOT 103.9 signed on they were a carbon copy of HOT 107.9 here in ATL. Jerry Smokin B, Harold Banks, Neek, Princess Ivori and Ant Mac all were once Radio One employees here at HOT 107.9. They nailed BIG DM since there was a void in the market for a real Hip-Hop station with a down South touch. IMO, HOT 103.9 went down the drain when Inner City bought them and all the ATL folks moved on. However, Jerry Smokin B had returned to HOT 107.9 as PD and Big Sexy became APD. Jerry also brought aboard Pezo Coconuts. Jerry resigned, Pezo got the ax and Big Sexy is still APD out here at HOT 107.9. A new Rhythmic station in Columbia could work, but God knows I hope it won't be anything like the Cox Rhythmics (ex. HOT 98.1/Greenville,SC or 95.5 The BEAT/Atlanta,GA).

Sorry to say, but folks in Charleston is in need of a real Urban Hip-Hop station. Sure Z93 JAMZ plays a lot of new R&B, but the station is all over the place. They win by default, but have had some pretty solid competition in the past. Clear Channel could've put more effort in both 94.3 THE BEAT (CHR/Rhythmic) and then POWER 94.3 (Urban). I think the folks of Chucktown would really want another HOT 98.9 station. Nonstop hip-hop and always in the clubs.

ShawtyBlack...WHZT is so horrible..I am not a regular listener but it sounds really bad. The whole thing. Cox is probably the worst, if not one of, rhythmic owner out there.

So, tomorrow is Monday, will the new 94.3 format be revealed? I wonder if they'll start leading in to it at 9:43AM and launch it at 10AM. Just an idea

Here's my guess. I noticed that they played the song "River" a lot during Christmas. By at least three different artists. So, I'm guessing it's "94.3 The River." Soft A/C. Just a stab. I could be dead wrong.

I could definitely live with that especially if things were live and local and it will be really interesting to see when they finally get something going .

You know, I was driving through Columbia on Friday, scanning through the channels, and I could have sworn I heard a scene from Cars on the radio. I chocked it up to being in bad need of the vacation I was about to start...but looks like I wasn't crazy after all.

FYI...Sarah McLaughlin's version of "River" might be new but in researching that song a couple of weeks ago...(I really liked it..) I found out that it's an old Joni Mitchell song from her 1971 album "Blue." (!!!) Nonetheless, the movies are really annoying to me....

Double O's webmaster needs to at least take the Country Legends site down or something. It still says the Christmas Station.
Are they not even telling when to tune in to hear the new format? A little stunting is OK, but they don't have to carry it out so long. I would at least tell the listeners when to listen for the new format.

Even if they did tell listeners when the new station debuts, few would hear it because no one is going to sit through the audio of a two-hour movie. One tease liner every two hours. How's that for frequency?

So I heard that Roper was trying to come back to Columbia. Could it be that Double O realized they needed him if they were going to succeed? Ha HA Ha. Ok, even I couldn't say the last part with a straight face...Did hear he is coming back, though. Is it to Legends? It might be a better fit than trying to be young and hip. The webmaster will have to revamp the whole website, there isn't the required 10,000 Roper mentions, but they surely could get that done before noon tomorrow.

Maybe I am crazy, but that might work. Don't know about you, but at least by 12:15 I will be glued to the radio, and might check out 94.3!!

Had to comment on the screenname: Seacrest ain't "out" officially.. yet. ::)

I can't imagine anyone bringing Roper back in town, given his current track record and salary demands. This sure ain't the environment to take a gamble on a high-priced talent. If he's coming back, it will have to be on his own stick. Which, if he has the money to acquire his own in this market, God bless him, 'cause almost no one else does.

The only way that I could see Jeff Roper coming to 94.3 is that he would be buying it or doing a LMA because I am sure that he left the Columbia Radio Group on less than great terms and am not really sure that many people in Columbia radio are really happy at the prospect of having him back here. It will be really interesting to see if they are just stunting or if this is the new format.
