94.5 FM Format Flip in Birmingham!

Speaking of fm gospel, I was reading MGY's ratings and if I understand correctly, their #1 is Hallajeuah 104.3 WHLW (the old "Cool 104").

Proves that there's money to be made with gospel, but didn't Birmingham already try a hand with Hallajeuah 105.5, and didn't it only last a year or two?

Some observations.

The last thing B-Ham needs is another Country station. Three stations already exist. Why bring a fourth one, if that's the new format for 94.5?

Hope 97.3 will become Urban Gospel and have success. B-Ham needs an FM Urban Gospel station again. It would be nice to see them get one.

Oh well! What do I know? I can't even pick up 94.5 at all, due to interference from a 205 watt translator, we have at 94.3.

Speaking of that translator, Mr. Glenn King is still doing WMBV from Dixon's Mills on here.

He still plans on rebroadcasting WJUS from Marion, once he gets approval from the FCC.

Sometimes I can get 97.3 but most of time I'm unable to.

97.3 is really one heck of a signal, all things considered. We get much better reception of them in the Anniston area than 94.5. Must have something to do with their elevation on Big Red.

Ok folks...it's been a week now. Does the format pendulum madness end today?
JOX simulcast....Country....JOX simulcast....Country....JOX simulcast...Country...Round and Round it goes.
Where it stops...Nobody knows (but maybe we'll find out today). :D

Hate to rain on the fun, but 94.5 is still the same as of 11:57 PM Fri evening.

I love country music, but something's gotta give. When 94.5 is in't playing w/ the JOX, they DO have a wider variety than the other stations in BHM... Cough, WZZK, cough,The Bull,. :D

Mediabase shows 94.5 with only about 140 unique country songs in their rotation this week. WZZK has well in excess of 350 reported. 94.5's playlist appears to be primariy gold-based, very few currents playing...that's the same thing they did initially with the Hot AC 94.5 format.

I found this article on al.com regarding the WYSF format change. Citadel is going to hold out until sometime next week with info about the new format. Looks as though the JOX/country format swapping will continue until then. Here's the link to the story if you haven't seen it already and want to give it a look:

Find it interesting that Reg has been retained. That would seem to put the kibosh on thoughts of a Rhythmic CHR or Oldies. It would also give faint hope to those who think Oldies would be the way to go. Country never really seemed an option, with three strong players in the market already.

Bonneville has launched a Triple A styled format called The Sound. http://www.thesoundla.com/index.php

Not a bad sounding station. A bit of L.A. style pretentiousness, but that's pretty much a staple of the format. I could see something like The Sound being launched...does Citadel have any skill set with this type of format?

what do you find pretentious about 100.3/LA? I think's it's very low-key...and well-targeted to the very normal side of Southern California

Maybe I caught a part-timer who was full of himself or maybe I was being a cranky listener.

But I have never appreciated the "jock as waaay smarter than the listener" presentation for that type of station, or ANY for that matter. The music was a pretty good mix of stuff that is just off the mainstream radar, but not so far off that the station could be regarded as Prometheus bringing fire to humanity. I prefer the "friend sharing something cool" presentation. Makes for a warmer feel.

That being said, will this work in the Ham?

I've listened to LA's "Sound" and I really like it. We could use a Triple A station in Birmingham, no doubt about that. But...I just don't see it happening in Birmingham. As I stated on another thread on the board here...When was the last time any of you saw a AAA station in Birmingham? I could be wrong, but my feeling is that WYSF will wind up with a CHR or oldies format (let's just hope they're not going to put a 4th country station on the air here in Birmingham ::)). I say oldies is a possibility because Citadel has flipped several of their stations in the past few weeks to oldies. Most of them are in larger markets. Still, they might try it in a smaller market like Birmingham. As far as AAA goes, we might not ever see that in Birmingham unless one of the non-commercial FM's begin to offer it. Not many options there, either, unless Samford's WVSU were to go AAA.

I agree that we don't need a 4th country station in the market. The thing that makes me crazy is that less attention might be paid to placing a format in the market that is the PERFECT fit, as opposed to making something that meets a corporate goal.

The reason for the sudden shift to Oldies by Citadel is a business model. The company has all these programming formats that they inherited from the old ABC Radio Networks, with most playing in the smaller markets. In order to update the product, they have a couple of formats from "signature" programmers. Scott Shannon's True Oldies is one. Platinum is another, more recently launched product. There is money to be made by placing the format on other stations and having them pay a fee or clear the spots. If you can't get someone else to clear the format in a market, you sorta have to "put up or shut up" about how good it is by clearing it on one of your stations.

If you look at the WYSF, they could throw oldies or Platinum on the air, gain a clearance and use it as a success story when they market it elsewhere...providing it does well. What interests me about Reg's retention by the station is that they may be using him to help develop a Triple A/Sound/Coffee House type format. The stampede to Jack might be ready for a repeat and there's short term cash to be made if they can come up with the next flavor of the week.

May be. If that's what Citadel's intentions are, however, he's either not aware of it or at least he's not letting on he knows anything in regards to the new format. He made comment about the pending format change on the air this morning, and he said he doesn't know what's going on with all of it other than he's been told to show up for the show every week.

i'm in my 2nd hour of checking out the sound. i'll admit, it reminds me of the old zew. it's even better than nashville's lightning 100. i belive i'll be checking this out even more. good stuff. i like this format. thanks whoever put me onto it...

Hate to burst your bubbles, but as of 10:53 tonight, 94.5 is still playing Country. I'll check in at midnight and see if they still are.

If they do turn to oldies, maybe they'll be like 106.1 in Tallahassee. "Tallahasse's Greatest Hits Q106." I heard em back in may, and they play songs you haven't heard in a while, we haven't had any oldies on FM with a usable signal since WODL flipped in 04, and Cool 92/94 flipped in Huntsville in 06.

The Saga continues....... :D

Hey Y'all.....

I SPOKE TOO QUICK.... As of 1:18 AM this morning they're BACK TO NORMAL, they just played "It's too late to apologise." All of this waiting up for this, I have to find something better to do than spend my time waiting on the edge for the same ole bull donkey. :D  ;D

Have a great evening, uh, morning.\

Travis

I'm in a mass state of Confusion. After Today's Jox simulcast, they're back to the country programming. All this is driving me nuts. ;D
Hope none of you think I'm going nuts, because it sure does look like it.
