94.7 to flip to "Fresh 94.7" this Thursday

@Robnoxious: I think KTNI in Denver took the cake for the best stunt with "Stripper Radio".

@David: I remember you said in another board that Monday is typically a weak day for advertising, I just don't get how listenership could be up on that day, but not the money?

Let's not forget Jerry Clifton's "Porn Radio" stunt in Fresno a couple of years back.

Retail advertising is generally THurs, Fri & Sat or Wed, Thur and Fri. This is when mailer cupons hit, and when newspaper coupons are published.

Seriously? Man, I love stunts like that clever and funny like that! When was the last time a station actually stunted in L.A.? Indie doesn't count because, they just played 5 of their songs in a loop...

When will these moron owners learn? We're in the PPM world now. They'd do just as well to call the station "94-7" and be done with it. Killing "The Wave" name only alienates loyal listeners, while doing little to draw in new listeners. What advantage would CBS get out of all this?

Keep the name. Just keep playing with the music selection and clock until you hit something that listeners actually want. Want more cume, play more 'hits.' Want longer TSLs? Don't talk so much. It ain't rocket science. But the name game has proven itself over and over over the past 20 years to be a no-win deal.

I agree and you're basically advocating for 94.7 to take the course that 98.7 took over the past few years. They evolved from a Hot AC to an Alternative to a gold-based Alternative or whatever it is they are now- by slowly scaling back on some artists, adding new artists, slowly dropping the "Star" moniker and slowly changing their positioning.

From a business standpoint, it almost seems to make more sense to say that we are growing and evolving with our audience, to better serve them, then to abandon everything and start Fresh (no pun intended).

The possible advantages? 1. "The Wave" name may mean "a station I don't like" to many. 2. A fresh name may make it easier for the station to attract new listeners. 3. A new name may release any commitment by angered smooth jazz listeners who do not understand that the station is not doing what they "expect it to do".

Since the station has pretty much changed format, we can assume that there are no loal listeners held over from the other format.

Keep the name.

It's a great name for CA, but it may have a lot of baggage they don't want.

Just keep playing with the music selection and clock until you hit something that listeners actually want. Want more cume, play more 'hits.'

They were playing the hits... for smooth Jazz. The problem is that the genre has a lower cume ceiling than AC, for example.

Want longer TSLs? Don't talk so much.

Or, as the longest TSL major station in LA, KFI, shows, talk about things people are interested in.

David: If that were true, then why did the cume go up with the change (1,785,000 in January to 1,896,200 in February)? That seems awfully quick for new conquests to replace defecting listeners.

Sampling. That fits the profile of new/flipped station with cume spike, TSL decrease until people decide to stay or that it is not what they want.

I tuned in online and checked their playlist. I'll be back. Wish they would flip 92.7-KTWA here to a similar music mix. FM in Iowa sucks for the most part. :(

The challenge is KTWV has primarily a 55+ audience. They've been sitting since the change in around 17th to 19th place while KOST is top three. Those cume numbers you see are 6+ and not in demo and don't reflect ATE (the old TSL).

According to LA Radio.com, Barbara Blake and Lawrence Tanter have "waved" goodbye.

lawrence tanter lt is one of the great guys in the radio biz , worked with lt many moons ago, even before he took the laker gig. lt loves jazz but the radio industry has changed, lt will survive. lt has what was called a real radio voice back in the day, you canstill hear him at every laker home game at staples, stay up lt

So far, this is turning out to be more of an "evolution" rather than a "flip". I guess they are desperately trying to keep as much of their base audience (45+) as possible while they add on lower demos with the AC music. The lean is still smooth/rhythmic/urban AC. I wonder if, or when, they will move to a more mainstream pop AC mix and really take on KOST.

ehhhhh its all the modern day version of elevator music to my ears anyway.... Who needs sleeping pills when all one has to do is tune in to 94.7 or 103.5? :)
