94.7 Updates

Do the engineers have the processing tweeked to the point of sounding close to reasonable? It was mentioned yesterday that they had made great progress on the analog but there were still issues with HD.

I wish there was a stream from what happend on 94.7 at the moment. Please can someone put that up, until there is an official stream? Thanks.

94.7 now has more presence than 95.5, more upper midrange that is. It sounds louder and crisper than 95.5, which sounds a little subdued by comparison.

95.5 has more mid-bass warmth (or mud depending on your interpretation), and it pumps/breathes on the dance songs with heavy beats. I don't hear that kind of pumping on 94.7, the drums hit with a snap without pulling everything else back.

HD and analog are sounding pretty similar to each other on 94.7 now. A little more compression that I'd like on the HD signal, but that's totally subjective and not unexpected. It's perfect for the analog side.

I think 94.7 actually sounds better than 95.5 now, both analog and HD, at least on the radios I listened on. They're ready to go.

Re: WFME Format Flip

This is what the editor of Radio Examiner says:

Cumulus Media has officially taken control of WFME (94.7 FM). At 3:39 PM Yesterday, February 11th WFME ID'd and went off the air. At 3:54 PM, the carrier returned to 94.7 simulcasting WPLJ (95.5 FM) with the RDS displaying the WRXP FM call letters. However, when ID'ing, the station was still saying WFME, Newark.

Well, as you might imagine, rumors are running rampant throughout the market. I've heard everything from a rock format to a country format to WPLJ moving to 94.7 with WABC moving to 95.5 and CBS Sports Radio moving to 770. Honestly, if I had a nickel for every story I've heard, I'd be rich beyond my wildest dreams. And if I had a nickel for everyone who swore they knew exactly what was happening, well....

I have told you from day one of this story what I thought was going to happen. And I'll tell you again. And if I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it. But here goes. 94.7 right now is finally in the hands of Cumulus and they had to find something to do with it. So they simulcasted WPLJ. When things setlle down, and maybe not until next Monday morning, they will park the CBS Sports Radio Network here. They're not going to do rock, they''re not going to do country and they're not moving WPLJ or WABC here. CBS Sports Radio lands here. WFAN AM and FM continue to simulcast from now until eternity. That's what I firmly belive. And, as I said, if I'm wrong, I will write an article stating that.

I HOPE he is wrong - I have my doubts about that. Plus NYC cannot support 3 FM sports stations. I doubt CBS would hand their programming to a competitor. But this guy may well be right. My first guess is rock, second is country, WABC and CBS Sports now tie as third guesses. Hey none of these choices will be much of a surprise.

According to the cross-town board, WFME chief engineer Charlie Menut is responsible for the sound quality presently heard over WFME. Programming is emanating from one of the transmitters WFME had been using to transmit their signal.

Meanwhile, Cumulus is trying to get their transmitter, processing (etc.) installed. They've been going between the old and the new getting the bugs worked out.

Ah, well maybe they're not ready to go after all then. I assumed the WFME transmitter was part of the sale, I didn't realize Cumulus was putting in their own instead.

I'm not sure if it was or wasn't, but it's been reported a few times their equipment wasn't exactly in the best of shape...

Does anyone know whether Family Radio's transmitter on WFME has HD capability? I don't recall WFME ever having been broadcast in HD when it was run by Family Radio. They have been mostly in HD since the switch on Friday afternoon. Perhaps that is an indication a new transmitter is already in use.

Do they really need an entirely new transmitter up on the tower to be able to broadcast in HD?

Re: WFME Format Flip

Wouldn't it be interesting if NONE of these four formats turns out to be the one?

I'll throw one out of left field... R&B/Urban AC

It may be a slightly older skewing format, but Cumulus would realize ad revenues from an entirely different audience, and their New York cluster would be more diversified. This would also fill the void left by the departure of 98.7 Kiss FM and target some of the WBLS audience.

I agree.

To the best of my knowledge, Cumulus has no experience programming or selling this format. I doubt they'll use NYC to learn.

Re: WFME Format Flip

I highly doubt it won't be alternative or country. I have a feeling it will be alternative based upon the WRXP call letters. Country we only have Nash FM and that's it. There are no websites set up yet no indication of anything. I really hope that they flip tonight at midnight or 6 AM tomorrow

Re: WFME Format Flip

Come on Country! You deserve it!

If not - either RXP or a revival of CD 101.9 (Smooth Jazz). Better yet, replace the HD Smooth Jazz with the RXP and put SJ on WFME...

Re: WFME Format Flip

It's gotta be Alternative as RXP 2.0 with the call letters and Cumulus owns WRRV in Hudson Valley and has owned them for decades which they have been very successful with a Music intensified morning show which works for stations like 98.7 in LA and Radio 104.5 in Philly. However WRRV is more active rock based alternative which might not be well suited for NYC. They do own 101.9 The End in Salt Lake City
