Re: WFME Format Flip
This is what the editor of Radio Examiner says:
Cumulus Media has officially taken control of WFME (94.7 FM). At 3:39 PM Yesterday, February 11th WFME ID'd and went off the air. At 3:54 PM, the carrier returned to 94.7 simulcasting WPLJ (95.5 FM) with the RDS displaying the WRXP FM call letters. However, when ID'ing, the station was still saying WFME, Newark.
Well, as you might imagine, rumors are running rampant throughout the market. I've heard everything from a rock format to a country format to WPLJ moving to 94.7 with WABC moving to 95.5 and CBS Sports Radio moving to 770. Honestly, if I had a nickel for every story I've heard, I'd be rich beyond my wildest dreams. And if I had a nickel for everyone who swore they knew exactly what was happening, well....
I have told you from day one of this story what I thought was going to happen. And I'll tell you again. And if I'm wrong, I'll be the first to admit it. But here goes. 94.7 right now is finally in the hands of Cumulus and they had to find something to do with it. So they simulcasted WPLJ. When things setlle down, and maybe not until next Monday morning, they will park the CBS Sports Radio Network here. They're not going to do rock, they''re not going to do country and they're not moving WPLJ or WABC here. CBS Sports Radio lands here. WFAN AM and FM continue to simulcast from now until eternity. That's what I firmly belive. And, as I said, if I'm wrong, I will write an article stating that.
I HOPE he is wrong - I have my doubts about that. Plus NYC cannot support 3 FM sports stations. I doubt CBS would hand their programming to a competitor. But this guy may well be right. My first guess is rock, second is country, WABC and CBS Sports now tie as third guesses. Hey none of these choices will be much of a surprise.
