94.7 Updates

The vast part of the WPLJ "heritage" is as a Rock station. I understand the concern over the billing, but if the modern rock presentation were done right it wouldn't affect one thing. Alot of females like modern rock, so why would it be a stretch to add a few more alternative tunes to the playlist and move ahead?

Most of the people in the PLJ's target demographic don't know of 95.5 as a rock station. It's been some flavor of Hot AC or CHR for about 30 years! It's been a pop station for far longer than it was a rock station.

PLJ today is more CHR than it was for example in 1997 and later. You heard a lot of modern, HOT AC music and also a lot of pop/rock 80's. When Kim Ashley was in with her 'all request lunch hour' and playing a lot music like Nathalie Merchant, Dave Matthews Band, Goo Goo Dolls etc. That was my favorite PLJ period.

Yes everyone who remembers WPLJ as a "Rock" station, like the old WNEW-FM, is now 50+, not a demographic that radio is looking for. That was long ago, nostalgia. They have been a semi rock station for quite awhile though, but the lighter type of rock, say the Jason Mraz type of rock. Although I know, most people will say that's not rock!!

Okay, is anyone else listening to 94.7 right now - the signal went silent a few times and then got loud... does this mean that they are still making adjustments?

Could be, or there is something coming at 12 PM.

I would say the engineers are still tweeking. I seem to remember someone mentioning that Cumulus was putting in a new transmitter and using the existing one as a backup. Along with the processing upgrades, it is a very complicated process. Basically, it is real close to starting from scratch.

The 94.7 signal more or less is what it is. The processing changes (or the content itself) might make it sound louder or stronger, but the signal strength itself won't change.

Sometimes going through and reworking the entire transmission chain can find some things that were wrong and thus limiting coverage/output. However, don't count on any big changes. You should end up with clearer, butter audio at roughly the same range than you had before.

You know what I would love but won't happen because of little revenue? Smooth jazz!!! When CBS took over WRXP, the HD was dropped and smooth jazz was fully gone from NYC. At least I'd like them to stunt, a little too unrealistic.

Well, you got that right. I don't think Cumulus even does Smooth Jazz anywhere, even though I do remember them having a 5-10 minute stunt of it during a format wheel or two of theirs.

Could Cumulus toss us a surprise by moving WPLJ to 94.7 and flipping 95.5 to something else (whether it's alternative rock, country, a simulcast of WABC-770, etc.)??

That would be ridiculous. I would bet the farm on 94.7 being the home of the new format.

I think they would be more likely to blow up PLJ than move it. (And the chance of them blowing up a station that bills well and does well in the 'burbs is highly, highly unlikely).

new format probably by Friday. I love country and I love Alternative Rock too. I still am going to have it as a preset because itll be about 20xs better than anything in the market now. I hope it's alternative rock however, 2nd is country.

See reply #528

The only problem is it's the only format that would get lower ratings that either Alternative OR Country. It's a case where one plus one equals a .2 rating.

Christian CHR... Come on... It could be a resurrected WFME but with current music :)

If I was the new owners.. I would so throw a "launch" of alternative or dance on there for a few days to toy with the folks on this radio board :)

That IS "Reply 528".

Now we are into repeating replies word for word.

What if it turns out to be yet another flavor of rhythmic CHR? Or tropical?

I keep trying to tune in 94.7 in my area of Suffolk County, but reception is still not that good.
