94.7 Updates

Would between Friday and this weekend seem like a reasonable guess for when the new format will launch on 94.7?
Clearly the simulcast with WPLJ is offering some publicity for 94.7, as it has been one of the recurring topics on the Scott and Todd morning show this week.
But listeners could grow bored if this is discussed on air for much longer than a week. So if the technical adjustments are complete, perhaps it may make sense to launch on Friday, or over the weekend, while there is presumably considerable interest among WPLJ's audience.

I agree. My guess is that Scott and Todd announce the new format at the end of their show, either Friday or Monday.

I'm convinced if it goes beyond today (looking likely obviously) it absolutely won't be alternative.

Why?
It would just be very unlikely Cumulus would dangle the RXP thing out there for so long and play it up all week only to launch what's expected. It's just a ruse to get everyone talking. They've done it before in other places. They're also running this PR blitz on PLJ because they knew people would be vocal about country and it'll look like they gave the people what they wanted.

Maybe it stands for nothing at all. Maybe the call letters aren't even staying on this station. I think they are just having some fun with this. No attention was really paid to this station until Cumulus got the WRXP-FM call letters. I think it was a brilliant idea. In the end Cumulus will know that NY/NJ has some very loyal Alternative and Country fans.

So the thinking now is that they are going Country, have been planning on going Country all along, but are going to tell everyone, "we were gonna go Alternative, got the WRXP call letters, etc, but THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN so Country it is!"
???

Another thought...since Scott & Todd rarely reference the music that is being played during their show, could they run Scott & Todd on both PLJ and 94.7, just with different music played during their show on each station?

That would be really tough. They would have to keep playing two songs of the same length to synch up with the show.

Remember they own 94.7 in Springfield Mass and could be tweaking the power of 94.7 in NJ to be stronger and weakening 94.7 Mass to be weaker so that they can justify bring PLJ over to 94.7 and then running WABC AM on 95.5 FM also for now. Talk is going to FM for the audience. They asking what to run on 94.7 and there answer will be PLJ. Think about it.

very possible. I somehow think they'll throw us for a loop and do something totally unexpected. Let's be serious...neither country or alternative has incredible mass appeal in this market.
Why make a mistake with the opportunity of a life time ( a new station in New York) and put a format on it that has a chance of failing only to realize a year from now that it isn't working. Neither country or alternative have had great success in this market. If it were my money, I wouldn't do either.

I seriously doubt WABC is moving to 95.5. Then what do you do with 77 WABC? The FM Dial has too much spoken word already. 94.7 was purchased as a Suburban NJ station and will be used to cater towards that segment of the population. Be it Country or Alternative, either format is listened to in NJ and Westchester County. I could see WPLJ's format moving to 94.7, but I could also see 95.5 staying as WPLJ but going more Alternative. If Country isn't the answer then maybe you take the WABC calls and make 94.7 a less rythmic Top 40....similar to WPST. 95.5 could be the home for Modern Rock. Perhaps that is the Nationwide Initiative that Lew Dickey discussed recently. Both 95.5 in NYC and LA could headline this network.

I recently saw the Hudson Valley ratings. WFAS FM's overall ratings dropped by half over the past year to just a 1.0.
Perhaps that will hasten their widely anticipated move from Hartsdale NY to the tower in the Bronx used by WFUV and WVIP.
Then WFAS 103.9 could drop AC, and keep the alternative rock fans happy, while NJ based 94.7 broadcasts country. I believe WFAS broadcasting from the Bronx would have much less signal overlap with NJ rock station WDHA than does 94.7.
Such a scenario would give Scott and Todd the opportunity to announce on WPLJ in a few days that 94.7 is going country, but the many listeners asking for alternative will soon be getting a station too :).

NO way, PLJ on 95.5 going nowhere. PLJ is billing well, and moving to 94.7 is also out of the question I guess. Too much risk to change it to another frequency.

Alternative would pull listeners from PLJ, read some of the posts about PLJ playing Alternative songs. Cumulus own a country station in Upstate New York it's calls WKXP! Given Lew Dickeys comments on RXP saying Cumulus is excited to bring a "New" format to NYC, all of this points to Country!!

I love country and I love alternative rock, but can country listeners hear some crossover country songs on PLJ the majority of the time in the recent years? Yes, The Band Perry, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift and they can hear them on 102.7 as well at times. Alternative we really can't hear Audioslave, Of Monsters & Men, Foo Fighters, Linkin Park, Jack Johnson, Blink 182, etc on any other station in the market. Also WRXP don't people remember that 101.9 as rock was WRXP 2xs so if it's the call letters now why are people saying it will be country.

Don't get ahead of yourself. First off Country would pull more PLJ soccer moms than Alternative would, their own facebook shows that. Second KXP was supposed to mean Kicks or Kingston to Poughkeepsie, there's no correlation there. Third The Wolf is locally considered a terrible station that lags far behind WRWD in terms of Country. Cumulus Hudson Valley is largely built around ROCK and the male demo. All of which they've done successfully. They own 1 of the 3 only Class B signals that hosts WPDH(classic/some AOR), and run WRRV/WRRB. (Alternative)

As has been said...this has all been covered before.
