Undoubtedly there is a huge population in the NY suburbs that would love a full market country station, as we can see from PLJ's Facebook page but is it ratings killer? Can it sell on Madison Avenue? I have my doubts but if Cumulus does go country I'm sure they have their reasons why they believe that this time around it will work and/or because of a national network. I'm not optimistic however given the history with country and the forever increasing ethnic demographics of New York and it's suburbs.
I know I sound anti-country. It's clear I'm not a fan so am not rallying around every article and pro-country post in hopes of getting my preferred format on the radio but if it works I'm happy New York will have a more diverse dial. We should be so lucky as to have a radio dial as diverse and with as many stations as Los Angeles but I just don't see songs about church and god with a pop twang as having much appeal to those walking the NYC streets.
I'm not into country music either. I don't hate it, just not into it.
However I think this time around country in NYC MAY have that chance because you have a lot more artists on the mainstream. Now granted, in terms of mainstream, Z-100 may only play Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum and won't touch other country artists. But I think there could be room here for Dierks Bentley, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Blake Shelton, Keith Urban, etc on a country formatted station.
It definitely appeals more to the suburban audience but you DO have people in the city "proper" that are into it. Granted, we may not have many country music venues here but for what it's worth, there ARE country fans here and to my knowledge, whatever artists have been performing at MSG have had their venues sold out. So in that case, the demand IS there. Whether that translates to Madison Avenue remains to be seen but this time around I think country can work. For some, the "twang" works
The only thing I see as a conflict is the same thing that current based dance fans go through.....today vs. the classics. I would think that whatever country station happens here would be current based and not "old school" such as Merle Haggard, George Strait, George Jones (my father listened to country music when he was alive, that's how I know these artists
