94.7 Updates

One thing is certain... No matter which format they have selected (*cough* country) If it is on fact a mistake, the station will fail. Just as WEMP failed last year...

A few nights ago, I bowed out of this thread due to the rampant wild speculative opinions recklessly thrown around since the WPLJ simulcast took to the air. I maintain that opinions not rooted in fact are a ridiculous waste of time and clog up a thread that was started in the attempt to discuss actual updates - not the desires of multiple RD members.

That being said, I suggest listening carefully to the "New York City Wheel Of Formats" stunting presently airing over 94.7FM WRXP Newark.

The eventual format is likely not something Cumulus is playing, it is something they are NOT playing...

I tend to agree with that .. And if that's the case, hmm ... I wonder :)))

That's what I'm thinking. They played regular country and i thought it was the format for a second i thought it sounded really good. Then I heard the others and I was like oh nope it's a stunt. They've played R&B, 2009 hits, Comedy, Country, Classic Country, Oldies, any others I missed?

They should throw in Smooth Jazz for a day - on the stunt wheel. Guessing Cumulus is using the "WTKK" method, by using about 10 different formats to confuse the listener, then finally reveal the format after X amount of days.

I don't think they're planting clues, and I don't think they've created a scenario where we're going to discern the format ... if ONLY we just look carefully enough.

We're getting into "poring over the cover of Sgt. Pepper" territory here.

The only difference is wtkk used one format per day instead of several 10 sec or more clips of random different songs.

A gentle reminder: new format starts on Monday morning 1/21/2013 at 9:47am ET.

The new all-inauguration station in New York! or...all MLK speeches, all day long! ;D (maybe some clips of those should'a been on the wheel)

But seriously...in terms of Sgt. Pepper cover investigation, one we can probably cross off the list: doubt it would be the start of the CBS Sports Radio network on a full(er) signal than the current WCBS 101.1 HD3; they'd be in the midst of a segment in John Feinstein's 1st hour of his 9am-Noon ET show. If that were supposed to be the case, there would likely be a different launch time to match up with the start time of one of the shows since the format wouldn't be so tied into the frequency. But, hey...ya nevah know!

Well, theoretically they could do a 13-minute montage of clips from CBS Sports Radio shows and/or general sports-related clips, which would lead into the top of the hour. Still, it seems likely that we've got a music format coming.

Of course, if it's really going to be a format that's NOT in the "wheel", then that raises my hopes for Alternative. (By the way, I've heard Smooth Jazz pop up twice already, for what it's worth.) Just as folks have said that the WRXP calls may be a smokescreen, that could also be true of the "Nash" website. Heck, maybe they're *both* set up to fool us and the format will actually be something different. But I can't really see what else it could realistically be.

If its not a format thats in the loop of different formants then I would have to say it would be Current Dance/EDM Music because that is what is missing the most from the loops. It could also be alternative though cause I didn't hear any songs from that category. I would really want to hear country or new dance on this station.

I agree, although I have to tip my cap to Cumulus. They've done a spectacular job confusing industry experts and radio junkies alike. The WRXP calls, the Nash-FM website (which, by the way, I feel would be an awful name for a NYC country station), the wheel of formats... It's actually exciting since something like this hasn't happened on NYC radio for a long time. Regardless of the outcome, it's been an interesting ride.

Dance? Out of the question I guess, because Cumulus isn't doing dance/EDM in other markets.

Seventy five pages with more than 30, 750 reads. I've been checking in on a daily basis, enjoying the speculation from the ridiculous to the sublime and now listening to the stream. There's some good production to be heard on the Wheel O' Formats. I tip my hat to the production pros, men and women, who've put it together.

Barry the angle that the non country people will take is that those people who attend Country concerts at Madison Square Garden are from NJ/CT and Long Island, not NYC. Which is precisely why Country will work on 94.7. It's a NJ signal, not a NYC signal. Cumulus clearly had this in mind when they purchased the station.

Totally agree, good thought.
