Help me remember! This guy was on 94 z in 86-88. He did nights and his first name was Kelly. Anybody got a clue where he is now? I can't remember his last name (air or real).

Well, I do remember a guy named Shelly Bynum having used to work there around that time. Me thinks he left for WDLX after that .....

That would be "Commander" Dave Kelly. Dave was (and I'm assuming still is) an excellent jock. I should know, I competed against him. During that period of time, 85-88, 94Z was a very good radio station. The G105-94Z battle was a very nice competition some of that time.

Would JRush be Jonathon Rush?? Also a great jock...

94z was a cheap G105 ripoff and ALWAYS sounded like it, except for a few short months when the Z mornin' Zoo was really good, thanks mainly to Art Sloan and Tall Donna. Where are they now??????? Anyway, 94 z went away just like I always said they would. Remember, I'm never wrong.

I remember the great days of 94-Z and that wonderful Morning Zoo radio program with Gary Dixon and Nola Roper before Tall Donna Mason. That was morning radio at it's funniest! I wish some of the current morning shows could listen to tapes of it and take notes.

If anyone out there knows where those guys are from that great show please post.

I always thought 94Z took the best parts of G105 and turned them all up a notch.

The Morning Zoo was the greatest! I still hear the Tookie Bird in the back of my head every now and then.

Former 94Z Morning Zoo Newsguy, Art Sloan, here. Real name, Tom Long, also of WTRG, G105, WDNC, WPTF, WQDR and Metro Traffic. Alive and kicking in Naples, Florida, out of radio for three years. Thanks for asking. Haven't communicated with Donna Mason in three years, but she was also doing fine in Raleigh the last time I saw her before moving south.

jrush is Jonathan Rush, but I read that he moved from WNOK to its sister, in Columbia, and the NOK email address he associated with this site is not accepting email. Haven't spoken with him in many years.

I don't think that Jonathan is asking about Commander Dave. I think he's asking about a guy named Kelly something (his real name) that I believe went on-air by Steve Rivers, who was a pure deejay: a dumpy-looking white guy that could rap (and I mean RAP) endlessly, and completely unrehearsed. Had a hard time fitting in to management plans and didn't last that long at 94Z. But he was a great guy and really fun to hear on the air.

Have a great story regarding Shelly Bynum, but too incriminating/embarrassing for him to put details online. Let's just say it involved a female visitor to the studio on a weekend on what turned out to be his final shift there.

I have to agree with Robyr Watts here. G105 squashed them from the start with better promotions, better music and better air talent. You're right about that one, fa sho. What better way to put your foot on the head of a new competitor who tries to swim up to your sweet dock party? Still, the Z mornin' Zoo was good and it's cool to hear that Art Sloan is still alive and out of radio. Thannks for the update, Art. Hope you're not drinkin' too much breakfast these days!!! Wink (freeze take in mid laugh).

Damn, You're not implying Art had too much "Instant Breakfast" are ya.. What the hell ya doing in Naples, Art? Working for the Circus???

Robyn,

That is indeed the same Dave Kelly. Told you he was good.

As for G smashing Z, in '86 (I think it was the Spring book), the two were in a virtual ratings tie (I'm think around a 5.5). G105 then made Mike Edwards PD and brought in Allan Burns and the ratings started to go back up. Even after Burns jumped ship to go to RAL, Edwards kept guiding the ratings up.

Again, I worked for G, so I'm certainly not biased towards 94Z, but facts is facts.

I know that this isn't the Aircheck board but I'll ask anyway:

Does anyone have any airchecks of G-105 & 94-Z (as well as WKZL and WKSI) from the 80s and early 90s? I had a short aircheck of G-105 part-timer Jeff Roberts from 1984 and a WKSI aircheck from 1993 that I've submitted to Airchexx.com years ago so that others could enjoy, but I'd love to hear more.

Personally, I'd love seeing audio of those stations preserved on the web so that maybe one day, it may inspire great local radio again.

Robyn, that's a great idear. I have quite a bit of Raleigh audio and some GBRO and VA. I'm in the process of digitzing everything and don't think that should take more than 15 to 23 years. Seariously, folks...where does audio like this live on the web? I do have lots. And lots of it is of some of the shlomos up on this board right up on here and they may or may not know who they are at this time now. Gotta go to karoke night.

Dear Sniff: How 'bout some airchecks of Brian and Kathy. Gawd...that was great radio at G-105.....HAHAHAHA!

Wow, Brian and Kathy. I believe those were known as the Golden Years at G105. Yeah.

As for airchecks of 94Z, I don't have much from post-morning shifts, but (somewhere) I have 10-inch reels full of Morning Zoo stuff. Problem is, I don't have a reel player or access to one, that I know of.

BTW, the circus (no relation to the aforementioned Zoo) in in Sarasota, not Naples. Just didn't want you to drive all the way down here and be disappointed.
