95-5FM WSM "The 90s to Now"

has wsm thought about calling themselves "Lazer" or "Digital 95.5"? it's about a dated as a few of the songs that i heard today

i'll do their processing. i have a whole CBS rack from the 70's that i could part with - wait, that may actually sound better. nevermind.

Yep, when it first went to Active Rock, it was "The Beaver". Apparently the women's lobby is stonger in Nashvegas than Hoptown-

Explains why "Bob & Sheri" didn't last long there... ::)

"..."The Wolf" at its worst still wasn't as bad as "the Tower"!"

...or it's sister, "The Rooster." Still trying to figure out how Hopkinsville and BG can have stations called "The Beaver," yet was just horrendous for 106.7.

Because "The Beaver" was born from the same brainchild as "Froggy". I'm an alumnus of "The Beaver" WVVR in Hopkinsville and I can tell you that with complete confidence. "The Beaver" was born as a rock/top 40 station and then quickly flipped to Country back in the late 80's-early 90's. It bears mentioning that it's a shell of its former self now with only one live shift a day. When I started at our old studios on Nashville Highway in Russellville, KY we had a warm body there all day minus overnight. That was 1999! We then packed everything up and moved to downtown Hopkinsville where we remained 90% live. Saga bought us out from Forever Communications and then the live shifts disappeared. By that time, I had moved up to Lexington, KY where I was helping program Cumulus' WVLK-FM (K-93) alongside Karl Shannon and Dale O' Brian.

"The Wolf" moniker was a brain child of Jan Jefferies and, WVLK-FM/WSM's, former PD John Sebastian. He left WVLK-FM for WSM after running "K-93" into the ground as "The Bear". What a pathetic move all that was. That was almost ten years ago that "K-93" ceased to exist and they still haven't fully recovered from that mess.

What radio station today with more than 10 years of history isn't "a shell of its former self now".

None. But in a market like Clarksville, TN there isn't an excuse for a stick the size of WVVR to be what it is today. They (Saga) have completely destroyed a station that easily dominated the entire landscape between Nashville, TN & Evansville, IN.

What about Q-108? I find it tough to listen to now, compared to several years ago. Then again, the signal isn't as "strong" where I live as it was.

Q108 was, like you eluded to, a lot better sounding earlier on than now. This station is the "main" station in the whole "Five Star Radio" cluster so the majority of it is live. The only problem with Q108 is its identity problem. Its always sounded like it wanted to go Top 40, but just couldn't quite make it over the hump from Hot AC. Never the less, one of the best jocks at Q108 has still hung around up there. Only difference now is he's the "News Director" and not a personality anymore. That would be Mr. Lee Irwin.

Not to venture too far off of WSM-FM, but I too have been wondering if Q108's signal isn't what it once was. I used to listen to them all the time in Hendersonville and recently when driving back from Springfield, where they come in clear, had a hard time keeping it in Goodlettsville/Hendersonville/Old Hickory.

They moved over to a new stick south of the base back in the 90's. It's positioned south of Fort Campbell and northeast of WPRT's tower (wherever that "thing" is now). I would chock the poor reception up to poor engineering more than anything. When Saga moved everyone over to Clarksville, they ditched a perfectly good engineer in favor of someone else.

Q-108's problem is that every time their djs crack the mic, they are required to say "Q-108, more music and more variety mean(s) the music is always right on cue (or is it "Q"?). Anyway, that is a mouthful to be required to say every time you open the mic!

Lee is the king! Proof that legacy is important in radio. Did he have the best presentation on the air? No. But, who could say they do not love listening to him. Passion x 1,000.

Sad about the engineer. I felt like that was exactly what it was. You could hear the signal fading week by week. It's ashame. That signal was decent a year or two ago.

Sorry, I have nothing to add about WSM-FM. Don't get that channel on mi raydio.

He could tell you stories about climbing the old Q108 tower just to change the beacon on top back when they were over off of State Line Road by Gate 4. LOL!!!

I drove past the WSM studios yesterday and there wasn't a soul in the place at 4pm. Surely the pathetic dusting of snow didn't keep everyone away from work there?

i miss the days of john sebastian at wsm. not only would he have been at work yesterday, but he would have taken credit for bringing the snow to nashville.

A lot of salespeople and former salespeople of that station really miss John Sebastian.

Sales people? Sure! On Air? I'm sure they are happy he's in Wisconsin instead of Nashville.

I'm sorry, but I don't have anything for his programming philosophy at all. He personally dismantled WVLK-FM ( the former, not the current one) and destroyed its once number 1 position in the Lexington, KY market. I just don't buy into the "Redneck Programming" idea that he instituted on both "K93" and WSM-FM.

To DJOnAStick, before Beaver changed to country they were CHR KQ-101 (WAKQ). As "The Beaver" was CHR ever played? If I recall the format break was clean from hits KQ to country Beaver, circa 1982 (?). Summer '89 I worked at Russellville studios and we were live including overnights.

Lee Irwin hired me for first radio job, weekends at "Privately owned and operated WABD-FM Fort Campbell, Clarksville, Hopkinsville". Great guy. He had some funny Swap & Shop horror stories from his Dickson radio days.

WABD and WCVQ have been some variation of AC since 1977 or '78. Before that they were rock format. If I recall correctly David Hall the late Steve Henderson worked there during 108's rock days.

Courier --- that all seems about right. I remember Q-108 as an AC station and can't say that I remember it being rock prior to that. KQ-101 was a decent station and all I remember about it being country was that Scooter Davis (from 92-Q) ended up there. I think you are right, they went to country as The Beaver. I don't recall it being KQ Country. That was way tooooo long ago.

Tower lights are fun. We call 'em "strobey things" on the NW FL board.

Pretty sure they have been referred to the same thing on this board. Maybe back in the Arbor Mist days?
