95.7 Lafayette

Third times the charm for country music on the 95.7 frequency in Lafayette. First as Big Dog when the station moved from Attica in 1994, then briefly in the mid-2000s when The Wolf flip-flopped frequencies, and now as a mainstream country station off the bird without a name. I have to give them credit for at least utilizing some of Westwood One Local's custom jock breaks, though. It doesn't sound bad, but it's a no brainer that this station is simply being used to bring K105's monster numbers down. I have to wonder--in a market with so many signals and so many format holes, wouldn't it have been more advantageous to try something different?

It's not so much about bringing K105's ratings down as it is about AMP offering a country brand to pick up dollars from those who insist country be part of any buy. No country at AMP made it too easy for some to put all their dollars at Schurz. Short of talk or perhaps AC, what other real format hole is there anyway?

There are plenty of good formats, that is why I have multiple subscriptions to Sirius/XM radio. The broadcasters better start thinking out of the box and they better start hiring salespeople, not young girls with short dresses to sell their product. Several years ago there was one broadcaster that stated in their help wanted ad, "females particularly do well in this profession". A "dog whistle" sexist remark if I ever heard of one. Fortunately that multiple station company went out of business.

Sirius/XM subscriber? Enjoy. I agree that sat. radio offers some great formats. Hundreds of channels and a niche for most every music taste. But please tell us just which of those niche sat. formats can offer a large enough listener base and enough advertiser interest to thrive financially for one of the two operators in Laf/WL?

This is a good question that could mean a lot of money for the risk taker. Look at the demographics and any other type of information available from the James Hill Library.

My experience in broadcasting is that the local advertiser could care less about Arbitron ratings and more about the rotator package and how much it will cost him. Program to where the money is being spent. I purchased a new car and I had to place my mother in a nursing facility. total expenditures were over $100,000. I also did some landscaping for $ 5,000. None of these decisions were made from broadcast radio advertising. When your 50 and over a long neck of ale is not my first consideration.

Sometimes I wonder if the broadcasters ignore some demographics. Local broadcasting is more sales than anything.

As I've said, the move at 95.7 isn't as much about ratings as it is about AMP saying to that local advertiser, "we have country too." As for risk takers - short of perhaps WIIZ - has there ever been a risk taker in Lafayette radio?

I live in Terre Haute and my knowledge of Lafayette radio is limited to the 1980's. We have the same problems in Terre Haute with Midwest trying to get some of the advertising dollars from Emmis by programming one of the four licensed commercial FM frequencies in Terre Haute to country. I wish I could remember all of the stations trying to unseat WTHI over the past 35 years.

The closest I remember to risk taking in the Lafayette/West Lafayette market was Bruce Quinn in Monticello, IN with WMRS and the late Bill Dibble in Delphi with WNJY. Those two both had "out of the box" thinking at the time.

This is correct. Classic Rock doesn't sell in Indiana unless you have Bob and Tom, and WKHY took that a while ago. Once AMP lost that, it was game over. Flipping to country makes more sense. It's a format that sells. It will get some numbers but, it won't take away from K105. That brand is to solid.

They had their chance in the early 2000's when K105 was playing an older style of music. K105 had a 9 while The Wolf had a 7. K105 got better and The Wolf didn't. Game over.

While driving through Lafayette over the weekend, I noticed that 95.7 had flipped to Christmas. My question is this... Why flip a station, build a brand for a month, then flip it again? I get the country format, but couldn't it have waited until December 26 if the flip to North Pole Radio was already in the works?
