95.7 THE WOLF IS COMING

And of course KSAN 94.9 went down hill once they recognized the competition...Y93.3 as horrible as it was. But, it was a GREAT country station that KRTY could only hope to copy.

"Hey!! Don't forget KSAN 94.9 back in the 90s!!"

It's interesting to think how times have changed. MetroMedia owned both KNEW and KSAN in the 60s through the 80s. KNEW had been very successful with Country music since the mid 70s, and KSAN was a heritage album-rock station. But as FM grew in popularity, rock on KSAN was losing ratings, so MetroMedia decided to corner the SF market on Country music by having the format on both AM and FM. At some point, KNEW became classic Country (Oldies).

As I remember, both stations had solid ratings through the 80s. But Country music had mass appeal then (think "Urban Cowboy"). At the same time, African American artists were complaining bitterly that they couldn't get airtime on MTV, or on radio outside of "soul" stations. I remember the management of KBLX complaining publicly and angrily that they couldn't get advertisers to buy time on "Black" stations, despite their decent ratings.

A verydifferent time...

It was corporate impatience which led to 'The Bear's' swift demise; the VP/GM came from Riverside's KFRG, a longtime country powerhouse which has just DOUBLED it's ratings in LA with NOTHING except word-of-mouth, and has the SECOND highest cume of any country station in America, according to their PD.

Now that LA has a new country station on the FM dial with a VERY good signal and Shawn Parr doing morning drive (and being absolutely HYSTERICAL and VERY entertaining in the process), both markets will be watched VERY closely as it relates to the format, and the label honchos in Nashville have to be VERY excited about these developments.

:)

I really glad to hear that there is going to be a counrty station in the bay area, I have been listerning to a station out of Santa rosa and Sacramento but they do not come in very well.
