95.7 will be...

BTW, I switched away from KISS to see if Magic was making any adjustments. Magic seems to have more ballads, and is running spots promoting "listen while you work." Makes sense. While many dance songs are the same on both stations, hard to see how 6 disco songs in a row would make KISS listenable in an office.

On another note, does anyone think 95.7 KISS FM can make a dent in the ratings against Magic 92.5 or (to a smaller scale) 105.7 the Walrus?

I think they could. Very similar demo.

What surprises me is that they didn't skew slightly older, going soft AC in the vein of 95.3 XHHIT (i.e. non-rock pop standards from 60s-80s). I know that's not the most desirable demo sales-wise, but since XHHIT has such a limited signal and is aimed at Spanish-speakers, they could have had that niche in San Diego almost all to themselves.

And there's always the actual KISS-FM, which is a Mainstream Rock station in San Antonio. Ironically, San Antonio is the headquarters of Clear Channel but KISS-FM is owned by Cox.

95.7 has some signal issues in the South Bay, which is where a significant portion of Magic's audience is. 95.7 has been a black hole of programming for the last 10 years. CC won't spend money on marketing, and certainly won't put any live or local jocks on the air. It will be another "also-ran" format for 95.7. But maybe that is 95.7's role in the cluster? Just take enough of a bite out of a competitor that will allow KMYI and KHTS to rise to the top of specific demographics.

Below, I have the 1-3pm Dec. 26 playlists for Kiss 95.7 KOGO-FM, Magic 92.5 XHRM and 98.1 KIFM. It seems like they're going after very similar audiences.

KOGO-FM leans more mainstream than XHRM. For instance, Kiss plays Cyndi Lauper, Low Rider by War which Classic Rock stations play, and Lenny Kravitz, who also got more airplay on Rock stations than Urban stations.

Meanwhile Magic plays some R&B titles which didn't have a lot of mass appeal, such as Gap Band - Humpin', Debra Laws - Very Special, Mary J. Blige - Be Without You and Debbie Deb - When I Hear Music. It's an interesting format for a market that has only a 5% African-American population. It really isn't common outside of California. It's aimed at English-dominent middle-aged Latin women, who apparently do know and enjoy these songs.

It's also interesting to see both Kiss and Magic play titles from Al Green, Diana Ross, Anita Ward, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Chi-Lites and Marvin Gaye, which most stations aimed 25-54 don't play anymore. Yet in San Diego, you now have two stations playing songs that go back to the 60s, apart from Oldies/Classic Hits 105.7 XHPRS.

KIFM over the last couple of years has made an interesting journey from Smooth Jazz to Smooth AC to AC that's about 50% rhythmic. Despite this evolution, the station has stayed in the Top 10, most recently #5, tied with Mainstream AC KYXY. Magic 92.5 has similar ratings, most recently tied for #8. While KIFM plays one or two currents an hour and songs from the 80s and 90s, the Kiss and Magic playlists concentrate on 60s, 70s and 80s.

Here's what Kiss 95.7 KOGO-FM played between 1 and 3pm on Dec. 26, according to www.yes.com

Personally I think that CC did a good thing (so far) with the new KISS FM! I listened to it yesterday and REALLY enjoyed it! It sounds like Magic did before Magic was taken down a "milk toast" "softer" sound. Magic today is completely un-listenable unless you are a woman 40+ or a castrated eunich 50+. I hope that Javier The X Man and Sherry Knight make the jump over to the new KISS-FM!!!

Looks like XHRM went softer to go after the KIFM audience.

Kiss is whiter than XHRM, but the white records they pick have Hispanic appeal.

XHRM was 5th in their target of 25-54 in the November book... that hardly sounds like a milquetoast format.

KISS 95.7 says they are 24/7, which means they will be playing music during Magic 92.5 spanish language broadcast Sunday nights.

Also 95.7 Kiss FM is louder than Magic! Say sayonara to Magic, and they will go poof!

I don't think that simply by running La Hora Nacional on Sunday nights, XHRM will fall to KOGO-FM. XETRA-FM has to run La Hora and they usually have better ratings than KBZT, even though both are Alternative Rock stations.

XHRM is 100,000 watts, KOGO-FM is 29,000 watts, and they're both on towers of similar height. So even if XHRM is across the border, it still has a signal that carries throughout San Diego County.

I imagine they'll be very competitive. As noted above, Kiss leans a bit more Pop. Magic leans a bit more Urban. But I'd say 80% or more of the playlists are the same. And KIFM, which is about 50% Rhythmic AC, is also a factor.

My question is, while XHRM and KIFM do a very good job in Women 25-54, why did Clear Channel think there's room in San Diego for another similar station? Won't they be splitting the audience three-ways?

Agreed. Sounds like Magic did 5+ years ago! The 35 minutes I heard the new Kiss was all "safe songs" from the 70s and 80s. Sort of like the Top 5 from years in the late 70s, 80s, and early to mid-90s. I'm sure they'll expand their sound more in the months to come.

Based on what Clear Channel is doing in Phoenix at KYOT, don't get your hopes up.

If memory serves, this signal (on it's format merry-go-round) had the same format about 10 years ago?

And right when they were starting to make inroads, the then owner flipped it to Country?

Love the format, but is there room in the market for 3 very similar formats, targeting the same Demos?

In other cities, this format has recently been substantially tweaked to appeal to it's aging target Demo (ie: SF/KISQ....Monterey/KOCN, etc).
