95.9FM in Dallas

There are four stations within 75 miles of Dallas with the frequency of 95.9:

K240DS (Garland) 13mi East
KCKL (Malakoff) 65mi Southeast
KSCH (Sulphur Springs) 72mi East
KFWR (Mineral Wells) 73mi West

Do these stations ever bang into each other? I don't know why the FCC approved the translator in Garland, it seems like it would receive too much interference from KFWR in Mineral Wells, especially as you get closer to Dallas. I bet you could pull in all four stations at different times within the city limits at the peak hours of tropoducting.

I really don't why I'm walking into this one, but here goes: the short answer is they all fit. The translator in Garland was originally a move-in from Canton, although it really was just a relocation of the construction permit. It's well outside the service areas (60dBu contours) of all the other stations, but it will probably become more prone to interference from KFWR once their move to Jacksboro is completed.

Even if the translator would still be well outside the KFWR service area the full-power station takes precedence. (Full-power, of course, meaning any station that isn't an LP or translator.) If it could be shown that enough people were trying to listen to KFWR in the outer fringes (parts of Dallas and Collin Counties) and they complained about interference the translator might be required to make changes. That could mean a change in tower location, using a directional antenna or finding another frequency (good luck with that, though, since most of them were gone even before KSKY got authorization for their three "emergency repeaters.") This sort of thing has happened in a number of cases, most notably with a translator on 99.9 in Sugar Land for KSBJ Humble (northern Houston area). It was ordered off the air recently by the Houston FCC field office due to complaints from co-channel KSHN in Liberty. I'm not saying that this kind of thing will happen with KFWR and the Garland translator but it is a real possibility.

Do the stations four stations you mentioned interfere with each other? Sure, although it's mainly during tropo events and doesn't really seem to occur that often, especially within a particular station's service area. I doubt that all four of them could be heard in Dallas like you mention, although there's certainly a good chance of hearing KCKL from Malakoff in southeastern Dallas County at times. I've done it on several occasions.

I can't pick up either station and I'm right off 183 & Mockingbird.

My question is just what is K240DS translating? Is the Overland Tx. station built and on the air?

JD, what exactly did you think you were walking into? Thanks for the info, by the way. Which 95.9 can you pick up?

It is supposed to be translating KKVI 89.9FM out of the Overland/Cumby area, but I'm sure it claims Garland because that is where the majority of their listeners would reside.

If the powers-that-be at KFWR were smart, they would buy K240DS and use it as their own. That way they could claim Dallas as well.

And while they're at it, why not buy KSCH in Sulphur Springs and make it a "SuperStation." Just think of it, you could hear KFWR "The Ranch" from Mount Pleasant all the way to Cisco (just before you get into Abilene). The Ranch could claim the West-o-plex, Metroplex and the East-o-plex, and would totally own I-20.

They should also buy that 92.1 station north of Dallas and take it off the air so they can increase KTFW power so I can hear it better in Arlington.

I would be sad if they did that. KXEZ worked pretty hard at getting that put there.
KTFW is land locked too. KTBB-FM Tyler prevents much of any 92.1 gaining power In this area..

There is too much of a gap between Farmersville and Dallas for the "superstation" idea to work for KTFW in Glen Rose, but they could buy that translator in Irving, K213BP. I'm sure KDKR is desperate to get rid of it.

I'm surprised more stations don't buy translators that are fairly close to them that have the same frequency. That makes their coverage area look even greater, and people love pulling in radio stations from an "out-of-town" station.

Just think about listeners of KFWR superstation idea, if it were to buy KSCH, listeners out in Mount Pleasant would tune in and say, "Wow, I can pick up a Dallas station out here? Awesome!" They would probably be more inclined to tune in, especially if it were a format they were into.

Won't help...it is second adjacent to the Cedar Hill facilities of KKXT 91.7 and KZPS 92.5. Even if there were no issues with other 92.1's, increasing from a C1 to a C0 or C would require moving the stick farther away...

Commercial stations can't broadcast on non-commercial translators...

Is K240DS a non-commercial translator?

I thought any translators above 91.9 were considered non-commercial...

I was replying to the K213BP comment...at 90.5, it can't be used for commercial purposes.

K213BP should be on 92.1, according to radio-locator. The switch from 90.5 should have been made already. I can't confirm this, however.

That was kind of out of place, I admit, but it was related to some of your previous posts. For instance, a while back you were convinced that a certain FM station had the best coverage in Texas. A number of people, myself included, pointed out that things weren't really the way they appeared (to you). My suggestion is that sometimes you may want to be a little cautious before arriving at a conclusion, but by all means don't stop asking questions. I apologize for the curt remark and for any misunderstanding.

As for which 95.9 I get, at home it's KCKL since I'm southeast of Dallas, but I have family in far north Dallas and Arlington so when I'm there it's either the Garland translator or KFWR. My experience with KFWR is probably no different from a lot of people here, in that they're weak in south Arlington and they often seem to vanish completely when you travel past the Tarrant/Dallas county line.

I don't know if you've checked some of the posts from the past about the translator but there were a lot of questions when it came along. It was pointed out that the main station in Overland would appear to be there for one reason only, to get a signal into Garland and adjoining areas, since a translator cannot originate its own programming.

The original application for KKVI stated that their studio would be located within a 25-mile radius of Overland, as required by FCC rules, and the translator application was amended to indicate that they would be relaying KKVI via its on-air signal. That, in itself, is questionable because of the distance involved. Is KKVI currently on the air? Supposedly they are, but if not then the translator couldn't legally be on the air. Another good question is whether there really is a studio for KKVI, and one of the original questions remains, specifically if there is an actual studio located in Garland that originates programming for the translator. For more info, here's a lengthy original thread from back in 2008: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=101777.0

It isn't reflected in the FCC station list yet, but they're back, with new call sign K221FM (as noted here, at the bottom of the page): https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/w...xt=25&appn=101363057&formid=910&fac_num=14442

Whoever owns that KKVI bunch is skating on the edge of the law. I busted them several years (I still have pics somewhere) for operating a TOTALLY illegal pirate in Garland (no xlator license, no nothing) and now they're allegedly translating a signal? I can pretty much guarantee you they're NOT picking it up off air (like translators are supposed to) and I bet if I dug far enough I could find a ton of other things they're doing that are borderline illegal. Wonder how long these boards keep archives... I'm going to go see if I can dig up that thread about them. They were even running as a "non comm" (read: asking for donations) during those pirate days. Sorry, but if you're getting underwriting for a pirate station... that's just not right!
