96.1 sounding more mainstream

After reading a post on the CHR board about 96.1 becoming a "full blown CHR", I looked their playlist up and they do look to have gone more mainstream, although the rhythmic lean remains. I wouldn't call them a Rhy/CHR anymore. Looks like Maroon 5's "Misery", Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream", Paramore's "The Only Exception", Taylor Swift's "Mine", and OneRepublic's "Secrets" are getting airplay now (keep in mind, CHR as a whole is pretty rhythmic right now). Honorable mentions go to Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" and The Script's "Breakeven", and Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" which they are also playing.

Any thoughts on 96.1's apparent musical shift in the recent weeks?

Probably at this point its a good one, and with the PPMs coming, this will get interesting. I get the feeling that at this point WIBT will soon drop the "Beat" and take a new positioner.

Interesting, 106.5 is going more active and 96.1 is turning into a full blown CHR. Neither really flips, but tweaks to their exisiting formats.

Maybe "Now" is the time to do something different with The Beat... With PPM I am sure CC wants to get as much bang for their buck as they can get... CC1

96.1 The Beat had also added the "All The Hits" slogan in addition to the shift toward Mainstream CHR.

Kiss, in response, had added the "All The Hits" slogan as well while decreasing the use of "The #1 Hit Music Station" slogan. Gee, couldn't they just be a little more original. ::)

How about something like B96.1? Fits with the calls. I think it's a good move, but "Beat" doesn't belong in the branding anymore. No "beat" in "Need You Now." Stay slightly more rhythmic than Kiss but still play all of the hits.

Kiss should have left their slogan alone ::)

Unfortunately, they can't use the 'Kiss' name for obvisous reasons. 'Now' would be confusing with WNOW spoaking Spanish up the dial. B96 is a possibility, or how about 96.1 AMP FM or i96?

The WNOW letters have been meaningless since they were on a Contemporary Christian station. That station is now the sister station to 105.3 FM.

The WIBT letters are confusing given WBT's presence in the market.

Maybe they'd be willing to trade?

I think Amp is trademarked by CBS, isn't it? How about i and Cumulus, since that's what a lot of their CHR's use?

My vote goes for B96.1 or B96.

With PPM, call letters have become meaningless from a ratings perspective, and unless your calls are how you already identify a station from a marketing perspective (in English) they're irrelevant in that instance as well.

Hey, look- this topic is intriguing. I have seen Kiss 95.1 really trying to compete with 96.1 the Beat by adding a Saturday Night Mix Show.

If the names changes for 96.1- A Great Name would be "96.1 Radio Now" or "96.1 NOW". I personally hate for them to be called "96.1 Kiss Fm" because CC already has plenty of those.

Hmm, it is getting a little intresting in the CHR world in the Charlotte market.

P.S B96 is taken in Chicago that is yet again owned by CBS! Not a good move! And Change the call letters that don;t really fit to the Spanish call letters in the Charlotte market...What other names can we call it? "96.1 WBIT"? That is so catchy!

B-96 won't work. 96.1 has way too much overlap with B-93.7, esp. in Gaston and Cleveland counties. BTW, 96.1 plays the dance version of I need you Know. I do agree that they are more mainstream lately though. My kids listen quite a bit and I use to hate it (I hate rap), but lately, I haven't minded it so much.

WFBC plays the remix of Need You Now too.

Why would Charlotte be concerned about a Greenville station? Greenville had a Magic 98.9 and Charlotte had a Magic 96.1 at the same time for years.

Then there was Magic 96.1 and Magic 99.5 (WMAG) in Greensboro at the same time, also...

CBS uses "AMP", but as of late CC has started using the "Now" positioner and The Cloud Company has their own CHR branding which is "I"... CC1

Here's a new one! In the news today, I see CBS flipped their smooth jazz station in Tampa to "Play 98-7"...all the hits without the rap.

Maybe that one will play in Charlotte...

Not likely as Play 98.7 Tampa is a Hot A/C whereas 96.1 The Beat Charlotte is a CHR/Pop station.

COULD THEY...justpossibly make a name change the day after Labor Day?

If you changed their slogan from "Charlottes Party Station" to "All the Hits" would it make sense for them to change from "96.1 the beat" to ______????

Maybe this is a sign to come. I hope so because "the Beat" moniker is to old and everyone is going "Radio Now" or "Now" like the one in Milwaukee and Louisville. "The Beat" does not play Maroon 5 or Tain songs so it has to make sense.

"Not likely as Play 98.7 Tampa is a Hot A/C whereas 96.1 The Beat Charlotte is a CHR/Pop station".

And that fact has what to do with the name "Play"?  So the word "Play" equates to Hot A/C exclusively? I think not.
