96.1 The Beat is now Channel 96.1

Don't mess with 106.5! They're beginning to sound good again. I don't know what's got into Clear Channel lately. All of their stations seem to sound better. Must be PPM.

I wonder if 106.5 could generate more #s and revenue as a straight hip hop and R&B then they are pulling now. That would give Clear Channel a Top 40 station with 96.1 and a true Urban.

I'm pretty sure 106.5 The End is generating more revenue than 96.1 The Beat, since WEND has a 4.2, WIBT has a 4.3, and Alternative stations have much higher billing than Rhythmic-leaning CHRs

If they wanted to flip one of them to Urban (which probably isn't a good idea anyways), I'd say flip 96.1 The Beat

Why would Clear Channel want to try to compete with Power 98 again? They couldn't with 96.1, and it seems they can't compete with KISS 95.1 either.

^I don't think Kiss 95.1 is competing with Power 98 (except for maybe a really small percentage of crossover)

EDIT: (Whoops completely misunderstood your post - sorry ;D)

I used to think Charlotte was too "white" to handle to 2 "strong signaled" "straight urban" stations. I'd love to see a station make a strong run at WPEG. 92.7 brought a knife to a gun fight when they tried to do it. I wonder if 106.5 could generate more #s and revenue as a straight hip hop and R&B then they are pulling now. That would give Clear Channel a Top 40 station with 96.1 and a true Urban. Kind of like CBS has with KISS and Power 98. I listen to Power 98 on occasion...I think they are awful! (I do like No Limit Larry though) I think a mediocre urban could take them to the wood shed!

Power 98 isn't bad its just geared towards an older audience. They play just enough currents to keep themselves from being moved to the urban ac panel. I liked 96.1 The Beat because though it was pop leaning, it was the only real choice for current hip-hop in Charlotte. Here's the bottom line. Charlotte doesn't need 3 AC stations. Either Lite 102.9, K 104.7 or 107.9 the Link should flip to urban or CHR-rhythmic and go after WPEG.

I don't understand why Power 98 leans that way as CBS Radio also owns the Urban AC in the market V 101.9. Power 98 should tweak and sound like sister station Hot 93.7 in Hartford, Connecticut.

Isn't Power 98 at the top of the market?

^Yeah, just not sure why people want them to change up their sound (to sound more like that station in Connecticut) if they're #1 in the market - that CT station definitely isn't #1 in the Hartford market

Also, I'm not sure if I could think of two more opposite markets (culturally and demographically) than Hartford CT and Charlotte

True your right. Charlotte, NC is a Southern while Hartford, CT is Northern. Both stations do well in each markets. Power 98 is more Urban then Hot 93.7, as Hot is both a Urban and CHR/Rhythmic.

Are there any recent thoughts on Channel 96.1?

I listen in Greenville/Spartanburg and like them a lot more than our B93.7. I like the music more...if I want to hear hits and want to hear them a lot, I go to 96.1. I like their musical lean.

Clear Channel CHR's are solid. Great variety. 96.1 is a good sounding station. I do not like their mix show though. They should bring Kidd Leow not Gonzo or Nate taylor. That's about it.

It seems like 96.1 is tilting slightly back in the rhythmic direction, which is a good thing. I haven't heard Daughtry, Nickelback, Sick Puppies, etc on it for a while like they were doing when they first dropped the "Beat" moniker.

Yeah, it looks like Kiss 95.1 is picking up the former Hot AC listeners (Marry Me by Train, For The First Time by The Script, etc.), which leaves a clear path for Channel 96.1 to lean clearly rhythmic

But they are not Rhythmic CHR by any means. So much current material for CHR is rhythmic that you already kind of lean that way. Kiss is just supplementing with some more pop/Hot AC titles. Nice to see both finding their niche, musically/presentation wise I like 96.1 more.

^Naw, I said that they lean rhythmic (compared to Kiss 95.1, which is now completely in the "center")
WMKS i Greensboro is the same way. When turning from one station to another, I never hear them playing anything that's not rhythmic.
