Yeah, I think they target the people who are turned off by WKZL being so "Hot AC"
And it's working for them, they are virtually tied with KZL. KZL doesn't seem to be reacting to MKS' recent success (still leaning adult CHR/Hot AC).atlantaboy said:

A few years ago rhythmic CHR was pretty indistinguishable from urban. In the past 2 years there has been a definite shift towards the center as hip-hop has declined in mainstream popularity. I think 96.1 has found a sound that works and I hope they keep up with it. Power 98 has also been playing more hip-hop lately so that hole in the market is being filled.
It seems to me like CHRs (that lean rhythmic, which is popular since so many CHR songs are) and Rhythmic CHRs are becoming more difficult to distinguish, the main differences are more hip-hop and no true pop songs on Rhy. I wonder how this is affecting rythmic CHR stations. I think 96.1 is sounding pretty good, only thing I would like is a little more pop acts like Train, Script, Plain White T's in light rotation....so they can play "all the hits", but still not sound like Kiss.bchristi said:

Both Charlotte and Raleigh are 21% Black so I can see why CHR's stations in both markets would lean Rhythmic.

The one thing I don't understand is why they still have their Sunday Night "slow jamz" show, which is more fit for an urban than a CHR or rhythmic CHR.

107.9 has tried Hot A/C here but never got much traction with it. They might be ready to give it another try.
I think Raleigh and Charlotte are different markets, but that's just my opinion. Charlotte seems a little more "rhythmic" (as does the Triad) than Raleigh who is a little more progressive seeming, which I would think would favor more Hot AC'ish material. 1047WNOK in Columbia, SC and 95SX in Charleston, SC lean rhythmic also.atlantaboy said:

Also, Kiss 95.1 leaned Hot AC all throughout the first half of the 2000s and got huge ratings in Charlotte, so I'm actually not sure there's anything more inherently rhythmic about the Charlotte market - IMO more like people in Charlotte tend to be conformists and follow trends (musical and otherwise) - that's a major generalization though lol (based on having lived there for 7 years)

The funny thing is, Raleigh seems like more of a rock market than Charlotte - and they don't even have a new rock station anymore.
I wonder how 96.1's morning show is doing. I read somewhere on here that it isn't doing great on 103.5 Kiss in Chicago (where it is syndicated from). I listen to them way more than B937 down here these days.
