96.5 the max fm...

Bakersfield radio, especially KKXX in the early 90's, was one of the best in the USA. Even better than Los Angeles in my opinion. They will NEVER have a better station than KKXX in the early 90's. Gina Davis, Paul Stevens (aka Paul Avila), Mitch Craig doing imaging, and Steve Wall as program director all played an important part in the making of Bakersfield radio history. I dont care what format 96.5 is as long as it is not a Clear Channel station playing country music. What a joke! That was just a constant reminder of how Clear Channel destroyed KKXX after purchase from Mondosphere. I think Steve King was running the show then. If so, hopefully he has'nt been allowed to destroy any more top rated stations. I emailed this idiot when KKXX, then at 96.5 as a cookie cutter "kiss fm" CC station, flipped to KBKO country. I made the prediction then it wouldnt work. They just kept whipping a dead horse and calling themsevels "as Bakersfield this" and "as Bakersfield that". Please, CC is a national broadcast company. Thier stations here are no different than thier other stations accross the country. Even the bumper stickers look the same.

Im not a CC fan by any means.. but CC didnt ruin KKXX, it got that way all on its own mainly because it ran its course. I was a full time dj there hired by Chris Squires, I was out of L.A. and brought in to try and help KKXX from getting its ass kicked by KISS. There huge ratings had dwindled big time by the time I got there in late 95. And this was while still being owned by Mondosphere. Chris is a great guy and I dig him, but at the time, he knew what had worked in the past and didnt deviate from it. His dj's were not allowed to stray from the liners in which kiss did, kiss had alot more freedom to do personality radio which at the time was a big switch for Bakerfield radio and it worked. They did phoners up the ass in which KKXX jocks were not allowed to air any. This was all under Chris. While I was still there, Mondosphere brought in Rhy Chr hot shot Steve Smith to try and save it as well, it didnt work. If you remember Smith switched the signal from 105.3 to 96.5 (X96.5). Mondosphere spent mega bucks on a huge billboard campaign for x96.5 which unfortuneately didnt work as well. So KKXX was well dead in the water long before CC bought it. I took off in late 97 to work for Jimmy Steal in Dallas, but I still kept up with the hijinx and the KISS fm name stealing scandal as well....glad I wasnt there for that. BTW Chris is in Sacramento working for Salem radio as D.O.P. unless he bolted already.

Also, here's an ad I just came across on Allaccess.com

Classic Hits mornings
96-5 Max FM in Bakersfield needs a morning host. We looking for a host who can share the spotlight with the music. You'll need to be comfortable with getting out in the market and meeting listeners.

Send your stuff to [email protected] -- put "Classic Hits mornings" in subject line. EOE.

The Fox is in the trust to be sold, if someone buys it and changes the format, the Max wins by default.

Squires hasn't been in Sacramento since he left almost 2 years ago. He was last working with AGM on their Christian station in Bako.

Are you talking about KISV? If I recall correctly, they did not blow into town until 98 or so.... and the KKXX switch from 105.3 to 96.5 with the phat billboard blow out et al did not occur until the summer of that year. And I believe CC bought Mondosphere and it's family of "other" speheres in 2001. And Chris has been working down the street with AGM for a couple of years now.

I hear the Max is trying to get a former local morning team back together to do mornings for them.Rumors are rumors.Sometimes they have a grain of truth to them.Who could they be recruiting? The Jami and Stench people?

Doug Daroo and the morning zoo crew!

Well Deroo would be a perfect fit.The zoo however has disbanded.Bill Manders or as he was known Brother Boogie Bump (i think) no longer lives in Kern County and I do not believe Deroo and Carol Ferguson (his wife?) are together any longer.Deroo could do it on his own but I think he has a job in televison.
