96.5 WOXL

Just wondering exactly what this station SOUNDS LIKE? Ever since it came on the air it's been one change after the other, and I really don't see why, given that it's always #1 or 2 12+ and has always done well. First, it was on the air as Oldies 96.5, with mostly 50s/60s and early 70s, then it went to 60s/70s, then a lot of 70s with some mid-late 60s, dropped the Oldies moniker and went to 96.5 WOXL, adjusted it AGAIN, and added tons of 70s classic rock to the playlist, NOW I see they're going by "Classic Hits 96.5" - just wondering exactly what's the problem here? Seems like the station has been all over the road since it came on the air and I don't really understand WHY. Thought 96.5 sounded great when it came on and has been slipping since the 'Oldies' name was dropped.

It seems to me that they are trying to compete with Rock 104.9 WQNS. They are playing a lot of southern rock with 70's classic rock mixed in. I do not care for the format myself. I am not sure of their future.

When I lived in Asheville, WOXL was once my favorite station. When the station first signed on as Oldies 96.5, it sounded GREAT. Gradually, though, they kept playing with the format and I stopped listening. I'm not sure the reasoning behind the constant changes, and I definitely do not understand why they are trying so hard to compete with WQNS which is an obviously inferior signal. They have always been second, right behind WKSF, and actually even beat WKSF the first book they were on the air. It's not as if their numbers are tanking like the Titanic. If they are having such a hard time programming one FM consistantly, what will they do when they have two FMs in a few months?

Also, if you'll notice, they have made almost as many changes to WOXL's sister, WISE-AM.

Have they dropped the "Classic hits" name again? If you go to 965WOXL.com, all of the announcements and every thing just say '96.5 WOXL' again - a few days ago (the day before I posted this thread) they all said 'Classic Hits 96.5.' The logo hasn't changed.

I'll tell you what a large part of it is. Saga is like all the rest. They will not let a PD program. This bunch even demands music changes be made through the damn VP in NY, or wherever he is. That kind of nonsense will ruin one everyday! Also, this same ole 250 played over and over will destroy an oldies station. That first book was a typical "novelty" check it out. They need to just decide what they are, and stopping trying to be all things for everyone. Sad to say, 104.9 will die on the vine eventually anyway! Your basic 4 watt CB has a better signal. This is the basic upper management constant "micro-managing". We see it everywhere now in radio. When I heard Anita Ward "Ring my bell" awhile back, I knew someone did not know what they were doing! ;)

I agree with the stoker!! One more thing.....MAKE THE PROCESSING CRANK!!!!! It sounds lazy!!!! I would like a touch of reverb also. Anyone remember WKSF Late 1984 and 1985? Good and loud! I was going by Spartanburg and tuned in WOLT 103.3 and they crank. OXL's sound needs to come alive!! They are also "HD", anyone try to buy a "HD" radio? You will have to order one because you ain't getting one localy! ;) ;D WOXL-I will send you a copy of a OMNIA owners manual to show you how to adjust it!!! ;D

Amen to the processing and the reverb! If an oldies station wants to "be" an oldies station, they need to sound like the boss AMs of the 60s, where either reverb and massive processing was introduced into the audio chain or someone had one of those "classic" car radios with the reverb knob on it.

I worked at "Southern America's Hottest Hits" in the summer/fall of 1985 with the full reverb in action. When you'd open the mike, it would sound like you were in this HUGE room, and your voice dropped about an octive with the processing and reverb. It even made my less-than-stellar tenor voice have some booming bass! And folks thought we were bigger than life. I never understood why other CHRs of that era didn't do the reverb thing. It gave Kiss a unique identity on the dial and you know when you were tuned to 99.9...they just sounded "different" (read better) than their competitors at B-93.7.

I was in town two days this week, and listened to 96.5 as much as I could stand. It's a tragedy, in my opinion, how bad the station sounds. I know it's easy for all of us to armchair-quarterback. However, I think Oldies has proven to be the "right" format, and they are doing a poor job of programming that station. It's a shame, really, because they have a whole lot of potential inside the building there, and it is being wasted.

Hi Broker!

I haven't forgotten wncradiotv.com. I have just finished burying my mother and settling her estate. I'm cutting WAY back on my teaching load beginning in January (only 1 class), so I hope to use my time to start this thing the right way that it needs to be done. I'll be in touch more after the holidays.

You wouldn't be "Pat Garrett" would you? It doesn't matter, I miss the "Boss" reverb sound that Kiss used to have. The only other station I know to ever have the reverb was the "Big 89-WLS". Electric 99-3 in Bristol did the processing and reverb thing in the mid ninties but took it off or had to when they switched to 94.9. The format sucks now anyway.

Pat Garrett had a tribute page to CHR WKSF but I think he's taken it off. I just happened to be listening the night Kiss management was testing the new format and went on the air the next morning full blast. The night before the elevator tunes of WLOS were gone forever.I think it was March 84', "Brother Bill" Prather and GT(Glenn Trent) were the best. I listen to WOXL quite a bit here in Greeneville Tn. and I myself am perplexed at all the changing promos and imaging.

Had the "pleasure" of hearing 96 this past week in Hendersonville and the imaging is horrible! I wasn't paying much attention, but something caught me...they played a song, then a sweeper; there was literally two minutes of dead air after that sweep before it finally went in to another song. The automation didn't sound very tight when I listened and the sound quality overall is poor. Yuck!

WOXL sounds so lazy! I like the music BUT, my IPOD has better sweepers, well at least it is not as loose as OXL! Pitiful imaging. Oh yeah, the management does NOT return Emails, don't bother!

First of all, I'm *not* Pat Garrett...but I do know him well!

Pat trained me on the board at Kiss when I worked there part-time in 1985. He's now working for SAS in Raleigh as a computer programmer.

I didn't know he had taken the tribute page about Kiss down. It's a shame they are gone. Kiss was a unique style of CHR and I always felt it had a much larger audience than the market numbers showed.

About WOXL: I trained Ken of Ken and Tammy fame on the board at WTOE in Spruce Pine when he was a high school student, so I guess you could say "I knew him when...".

As for WOXL, they need to decide if they are oldies or if they want to do a hybrid format of the old Kiss FM. Personally, I think that could be viable and could attract younger demos, but the playlist has to be good and the "undpredictableness" of the Kiss format will have to be there. They have just got to get off the fence and "do something" format-wise before they run off their core listeners and have to blow up the station.

I agree WNCMACS.......Bring back circa 1985...BUT do some processing! I will say the station's HD signal is good, they just refuse to promote it!! :p

??? That's Funny, I could have swore everyone was talking on these boards just last week that "Pat Garrett" was doing Middays at Majic 94.1 in Lexington, NC". Or course ,I would imagine there are more than one Garrett in the "woodpile" Computer What? Big APE doesn't know about that? Amadeus forever! Ha Ha ! Boring ZOO Ha Ha! ;D

I tuned in 96.5 last Friday for the first time in months. Good grief, they are terrible! The sweepers reminded me of the early 102.5 WMYI imaging. Yuk!! No energy level, boring, basically all dry! From what I hear, the VP of Saga, Goldberg, or whatever his names is, insists on making all the moves, even down at the individual station level!! That alone will be there end!

I had it on this afternoon on the way back from Asheville...I swear it gets worse each time I put them on. At times it sounded like they were running an online stream. 103.3 WOLT/Oldies/Greenville is a much better station. Better processing. Better sweepers (done in-house by 'Brother' Bill Prather, formerly of 99.9 WKSF, also the PD). TIGHT automation. Pretty sad when an automated 2700 watt station owned by Davidson sounds better than a FM owned by a big company like Saga with probably much more money and better equipment. 96.5 needs help! I think even Majic 94.1 sounds better than this.

Hi Carolinaradio. Im friends with Bill, and I know he would appreciate the kind words. It is amazing WOLT sounds as good as it does. Bill has no budget, no staff, period. During the non-brokered times, he has to do whatever it takes to get that oldies programming on. Thanks for the kudos...

Not that I need it when I'm in Haywood County because I have Dial Global standards, but I can hardly pick up WOXL in my motel room. I used to when it was on 970, which is incredibly powerful during the day and not too bad where I am at night.

By the way, I can pick up WRZK in my motel room.

Meanwhile, what are oldies fans supposed to do in that area?

And what are oldies fans in Asheville supposed to do where they can't even get standards?
