96.5 WOXL

I have always thought that station didn't sound nearly as good as it could. Another example of an owner sitting 1000 miles away pulling the strings, and thinking the music library in NY will fit in Asheville like a cookie cutter. They turn the same 400 songs over and over, never rotating anything in or out. They see 104.9 as competition too. Major mistake.

Hi Carolinaradio. Im friends with Bill, and I know he would appreciate the kind words. It is amazing WOLT sounds as good as it does. Bill has no budget, no staff, period. During the non-brokered times, he has to do whatever it takes to get that oldies programming on. Thanks for the kudos...
You're quite welcome. Tell Bill that he's doing a great job. I know it's definately not an easy job, especially in a situation like WOLT's (some times brokered, and that Davidson doesn't usually program in house). No staff? Wow. That does sound pretty rough.

Who is the other person that I hear doing sweepers on there besides Bill? Is that somebody that works for them too?

Interesting hearing you all discuss WOXL. I voicetracked evenings when they first signed on until Saga took over. When we got the music logs we used to go "WTF? Ghostbusters??? On Oldies?" But when I finally did an in-market, I understood. The station fit Asheville. Little did we know it was "Jack" before its time.

Sorry to hear it may have lost its way.

I can't get over the fact that WOLT and WOXL use the same type audio processor! The Omnia! What a huge difference!

The first time I ever heard WOXL it sounded like a traditional Oldies station but it had some obscure 60s tracks thrown in also. Saga didn't start the Oldies format on 96.5 did they? Seems like the decline started after they purchased it.

WOLT is one of the best-processed Oldies stations I've ever heard. They really boom and crank! 8)

I was in town for dinner last night and listened to WOXL for a bit...I know I've said it before, but I have to say it again...I just don't get the warm-fuzzies anymore. This was the station I once listened to all the time when I lived in Asheville, and now I can't listen for more than ten minutes at a time without being disappointed.

I don't like to be so negative, but it really is a poorly-programmed station.

YOU ARE CORRECT MR. Z-100!!!! They need to make that OMNIA crank!!!!!!

It was started as Oldies by American Media Services, which LMA'd it from the CP winner Valerie Klemmer Watts. It was called Oldies, but the music mix was really more a JACK'd up Gold AC. Looked awful on paper. Actually really fit it into the whole off-kilter quirky vibe that is Asheville. When Saga took over they started making changes. Our voice-tracking services terminated with the LMA.

Wow...you ain't kiddin Broker!!!

Almost a 4 point dropp and tied with News/Talk?

That's about as bad as it gets!

I wonder if they dropped Classic Hits from the name and went back to 60s/70s only if it could be saved? They need to do something fast before things get any worse.

Simple, get another PD and MD. Two who actually KNOW what they are doing, BUT I dare say they are lsitening to someone OUTSIDE the market try cookie-cutter radio...can't do that in Asheville.

What in the world are they doing, AOR? "All over the Road"??

Under Pressure - Queen
We Will Get By (?) - The Grateful Dead
Blue Monday - Foreigner
Pretty Woman - Van Halen
Asia-Heat of the Moment into a very soft Elton John song with no imaging in between. They are in the panic mode! ;)

We Will Get By (?) - The Grateful Dead
Blue Monday - Foreigner

Not that it has any relevance whatsoever to the thread subject, but the actual title of the Grateful Dead tune is "Touch Of Grey", and the Foreigner tune is "Blue Morning Blue Day".

Since you put the question mark there, I thought I'd help.

I am happy that they have added songs to the playlist of 200, now they have 218! Still no processing  Maybe they are stunting in some weird twisted way for the 105.9 move-in? Who knows!

What I fine interesting is how they have gone full circle. It has gone all the way back to how it was as WZLS. Play anything, little structure or real execution type station. You just cannot be all things for everyone! Especially not in Asheville! They had thir best numbers when they were a true oldies station!

Maybe they will get Brian Lee and Rick Hampton, play some dope-smokin' rock and it will fly. It's Asheville- the downtown bunch with the trust funds and reefer breath will enjoy it!

I was listening a few days ago and this is really strange...they were playing some extremely long folk-sounding song that I've NEVER heard anywhere before. It just kept repeating itself. Definately not Classic Hits or Oldies. What is wrong with them? I can see adding a few more recent songs, but why this extreme? They have good talent there that is just wasted.

I still see no logic in the switch from TRUE Oldies in the first place. They need to go back to Beatles, Beach Boys, Supremes, Four Tops, Three Dog Night, Dusty Springfield, Turtles, etc...

You're not kidding!! I agree with you 120 percent! They lost the fun aspect of their radio station long ago.
Regarding the oldies ...uh let's see...Asheville a big area for retiring baby boomers...ok...so let's switch from the
music they grew up with...to classic crap. Unbelievable!

This is not brain surgery folks!
