96.7 moving

Kind of odd that they picked 1049rocks as the domain name. I don't know what else is available, but seeing that 93.3 is now The Planet "Rocks", you wouldn't think you'd want to be kissing cousins with that. Just for kicks, I found that the www.1049theroad.com is available.

It looks like 96.7 is just going to go silent.

The allocation is there, why not just use it for something else or sell it. 96.7 and 104.9 would be from the same transmitter location with very similar power (700 vs 720 watts). I don't see any incentive to move if there's no real benefit...

I wonder if 104.9 will be broadcast in HD like 96.7 currently is...

Either way this will cause some interference to WKQC for those around spartanburg...

I discovered this past week that WQNS 105.1 (formerly 104.9) in Asheville has a very limited range. Now I'm wondering if any of this was a good idea.

I think this is a chess game and there are other moves to take place.

Well, the next quarter or two should be interesting. With both The Road's move and Earth getting a second signal, Classic Rock 101.1 stands to lose the most IMO, with Chuck also in the mix.

Chuck and Earth have a different mix, but all four stations largely have the same target demo. I don't think they'll all survive.

As for straight classic rock, it still baffles me as to why the market even needed a second station. Rock 101 has lost a lot of it's shares over the years. Even in the mid-90s, it was still battling with the country stations and JAMZ for the top spots. This can only further chip away at its' ratings. Entercom will need to freshen up its playlist and maybe open it up more if they don't want to drop further. The Road could never top 101 due to signal strength, but together with Chuck and Earth, further damage is certainly in the cards.

First, the above post by awp69....is brilliant, and sums it all in a nutshell.

I ask that you-all read it. I especially agree with the last paragraph.

I'll add: ROQ has an Awww-ful part-time airstaff.......just Awww-ful! Their full-timers were never the problem,...just that Burnt playlist!

what, exactly, is a "pencilneck consultant" by industry definition? FTR, I will state publicly I was never in the "Radio Biz" but this term seems to come up quite frequently on the boards/forums that I am currently on, and I don't understand what it means.

Also, Google doesn't answer this term directly so quite frankly, my curiosity is piqued. Steve G.

The purpose for 104.9 is to make a better package sell for USC athletics and also push down WROQ to help CC's country stations. WROQ used to be a very solid performer that could hit the top 5, although that isn't really the case anymore and hasn't been for a while. It's there as a flanker and for sales purposes more than it is for any kind of performance on its own.

Really, the only one of any of those stations that is worth anything is Earth.

Charlotte got the Hornets back.

We want WROQ back as well. How could those legendary letters have been lost?

If, as unlikely as it sounds, the station called WROQ does go away, then the letters will be available. Some have asked what Kiss 95.1 could do to distinguish itself from Channel 96.1. Well ...

Well,....you lost those WROQ calls letters, via the great decision of a Pencilneck Consultant, a Tough-Guy GM....or Both. They didn't just float away like a stray cork at a riverside picnic. We, Rock 101 WCKN-FM....applied them in early 1989 or 1990,...as the FCC told us that they were available! I changed the call letters Live, on the air, on a Thursday morning in 1991. That station would have to die, before the FCC would award them back. However, if someone there don't start listening to ME or another Programmer of similar thinking,.....you might see them soon!
