96.7 The Legend Is Already Here

caller10 said:
They promoting ten in a row, but how hard is it to play ten songs in a row when in classic country your songs average 2 minutes 15 seconds a piece! (ok maybe slight hyperbole)

the other question is how does 96.7 "The Legend" playing "ten in a row" affect Q100?

You're not off by much, caller10...

I haven't heard this station yet but from the sound of things here, I'm not missing anything.

I did overnights at South 106 (now Rooster 106) in Columbus 1989-91, we were still playing lots of 70-80s (andeven some 60s) gold at the time. The golds were on TM Century CDs, the currents and recurrents on carts. No automation. Let's just say you would hear Eagles "Lying Eyes" (6 minute 19 seconds) at least a few times a week .....

Actually this frequency dates back almost 60 years. 96.7 was the longtime FM side of WCOH AM in Newnan. The antenna was located on the WCOH tower until 1985. WCOH just celebrated 60 years on the air in early December. The station signed on as an AM and FM in 1947 although the FM was at 92.3 originally. Sometime during the next few years the station moved to 96.7 and would remain WCOH FM until 1982. Then owner Dallas Tarkenton changed the call letters to WRNG in late 82. The station was sold in 1985 and a new tower was built north of Madras GA along I-85 with hopes of serving Atlanta as the WBUS "The Bus", an urban format. The class A signal did not cover Atlanta and the Bus soon "ran out of gas". The station ran a sattellite fed old school urban format for a time as WWER and later in 1987 Tarkenton regained control of the frequency. The studio was moved back to the WCOH facility in Newnan and the station had a most successful 13 year run as South Metro's Magic 96.7. By the summer of 2000 Clear Channel owned the station, had moved the transmitter to Tyrone and switched the station to "Wild 96.7. I lost track of the formats and calls soon thereafter.

Thanks for that early history....great info. I do remember the first time hearing this as Magic 96.7 while living in Henry county late 80's....barely audible around I-75

Lying Eyes was always my "bathroom" song. :)

You could also use "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" from David Allan Coe (5:14) or Ray Stevens' "The Haircut Song" (6:17)...or Marshall Tucker Band's "Heard It In A Love Song." That's a good 5:00, too...

Maybe I'm sharing too much. ;D

I registered just to say this (and probably more as the 'Days Go By', lol).

What the hell was wrong with 96rock?
Clear Channel, when they acquired the rights to broadcast the Atlanta Braves, made 96rock the 'Home Of The Braves'.
They even went as far as to make a 96rock billboard ad that said "Styx & (Rolling) Stones, Smoltz & (Chipper) Jones"

Then they went and screwed it up when they made "The Project"
Also, what's with them taking our Buzz 105.7 and turning it into a latin station, ¡Viva! 105.7, makes no sense.

Now 94.9 The Bull has the Braves.
Also, Kicks, The Eagle, 99x, and Q100 have been here much longer and have a higher rate of stability. Same with B98.5.

Clear Channel just can't get ahead in my head.

(PS, TBS has really screwed up big time. They were able to bring Major League Baseball to towns all across America without a team. They also screwed up when they dropped The Drew Carey Show)

((All this is rambling on...))

Or, if you can stomach it, "Teddy Bear" by Red Sovine. That one always feels like it's about 29 minutes long when I have to play it for a listener request.

It dates me, but "MacArthur Park/The Yard Went On Forever". When you heard the final crescendo start, you just had time to do your paperwork and motor back into the studio and cue up another one. Which action also dates me, I fear...

UGH! Teddy Bear...I'm sorry you get requests for that too. About the only Red Sovine I can stomach is "Phantom 309" and that's sparingly. The world's worst is "Little Joe"...where Red's in a horrible accident in a semi and goes blind but the stray dog he picked up becomes his seeing eye dog, and somehow the kid from Teddy Bear isn't handicapped anymore and has become a trucker... ???

Anyway.

"Doing your paperwork..." ;D I like that one.

Ah, the old cue-and-a-quarter-turn. Good times. I gotta admit... for all the days I wanna throw it through the window, I still heart NexGen. :-*

They all look about the same to me. Each gots its high points and its problems. At least they neither cueburn or eat carts on a bad day.

I have changed my mind !!!! I really like this station. I hate the fact the DAMN signal isnt strong enough to hit Atlanta, But Its a great listen. I cut my teeth getting in the Radio biz on most of these tracks. It sounds like a FM version of the 1000 watt powerhouse ;D that I started on.. Taylorengineer remembers: It wasnt all that bad a radio station, and the legend actually sounds pretty good. I miss those days, Hell I even had a head full of hair, and I was only 17.. But now, no hair and listening to the legend.. Yup Im older.. It stinks..

I read earlier in the post that Joe had nothing to fear from 96.7 the Legend. CC in Atlanta or Columbuscould careless about Pedicino. CC in Newnan or Graddick doesn't even worry about Pedicino.

Lilburncomm is talking about WACX 1600 Austell back in the late 70's - early 80's.
Captain Herb Emory was manager.....Rex(Lilburncomm) and I worked there also. I did middays for a year or so.....I was REALLY BAD on the air.....but I got to play lots of country records no one in thier right mind would play and I got to play with the local groupies....my first real taste of commercial radio"sin."
The Legend is starting to get boring.....I figured a country station I LIKE would NEVER be successful!

...my first real taste of commercial radio"sin."

Rember the Two Rules:

1. Don't **** the help.

2. Don't **** the groupies.

Both actions will eventuqally lead you to grief.

Not following those two rules has led to lots of trail and tribulation in the past.
My daddy always said, "Son...don't dip your pen in the company ink."
I wish I had listened to Dad a little more....

Hey taylorengineering,
I don't recall Capt Herb being manager at WACX - I remember Bill Brown, followed by Al Cohen then Ann
Leathers but not the Capt. I do know for a fact that the Capt managed WDGL Douglasville for some time
because he and the management at ACX were fighting tooth & nail for what few dollars there were scattered
around the Austell - Lithia Springs - Douglasville area.

Yes.....Herb did run Austell for a couple of years just before his stint with 94Q.
"Big George" Purdy bought WACX in the late 70's - early 80's. His stepson, Brad, initially ran the station. Herb took over when Brad left.
If you know Herb Emory you know he is a great guy! Herb also got along well with the local business folk and never lost money for Big George. He did not, however, have that "seedy" air about him that is essential for radio management and I think Herb really liked being on the air and playing in his band more than doing "radio deals." Herb was eventally replaced by a "ex-used car salesman" manager and the air staff replaced by a clunky, used automation system from some where in Tennessee. The format went oldies for a while amd then Mexican.
There were some good times/great oldies at WACX - I wish I could tell some of the stories but I'm not sure the statue of limitation has expired on some of our "crimes."
For those that might remember....I did some work for the Mexican station a few years back and found the Polaroid pictures of a certain female staff member flashing various private parts....faded...but still there. I left them in place....but the building was renovated so I don't know if they still exist.
