96.9 The Beat Domain name registrations...

you beat me too it raccoon!! i just saw that and maybe if done right could be successful. I'm thinking of a strict hip hop station like hot 97.7 was back in the day, with mix shows on nights and weekends its something different, But does anyone know if gm has experience in this format???

I don't know if they have experience or not--let's check their site

Markets and stations:
http://www.greatermedia.com/?page_id=39
At quick glance doesn't seem like they have stations of this type but who knows.

Brian M of Radio Eq. wondered while N/T 96.9 may be gone totally maybe they'd move it to another signal. But 102.5 solid as country, 105.7 and 106.7 do well... 92.9? But isn't that signal comparable to 96.9 so why bother?
Or heck GM could buy 1200 from CC...but would they even bother?

was wondering what they would do with all those contracts graham etc?? was thinking they could move to another station maybe to an hd2?? with a canned news-feed and no hosts!!! decisions ??? decisions

I thought E&B and Graham's contracts expire in '13 but not sure. Severin's was due to expire next yr I think but he was fired for cause. Thought E&B re-upped last yr or yr before.

Don't know if GM would bother with an HD2, etc. Supposedly RKO has coveted E&B in the past.
A place for them? Or Graham? And again Howie was hoping for an FM station (and again this is all speculation at the moment) but this may force him to stay at RKO, if he wants to keep doing talk
radio at all post-late-2014 when he FINALLY could leave.

Hire Pebbles and get her a co-host named Bam Bam.

Maybe automated variety hits (and more than just vanilla and French vanilla) or automated R&B/hiphop etc.? Mark of BRW pointed out to me "robot 92.9" is a success. It could be
we-don't-need-no-stinkin'-DJs.

Greater Media has no Hip Hop or Urban AC stations so i'm not to sure if this is false or not, but the person who registered the sites had the same registrar used by Greater Media, so it could be a possibility.

WODS flipping from Classic Hits to CHR has left a huge format hole open. WMJX is the only station in the city where you might hear 70's 80's & 90's Rhythmic hits at any time. WROR is still Bad Company and the Eagles, not Prince, Madonna & NSync.

GM could likely monetize this demographic better than CBS did - bringing back "Oldies" or a "Star 93.7" format would complement their other properties.

There's no chance they'll do hip hop. Hip hop is in decline nationally, most of the hip hop stations now sound more like mainstream CHR's lately. My money would be on GM doing a Rhythmic AC.

God I hope it's Rhythmic AC or Urban AC with either "Keith Sweat Hotel" or "The Quiet Storm" on at night (The Quiet Storm-See-Superadio.com)

But whey would they change their format when they just named it "NewTalk 96.9"?
For me, for now, "NewTalk 96.9" sounds pretty good.
If they do decide to change the format and go (Jockless-like one mentioned), why not just put on "The Touch" ("The Touch"-Cumulus Media Network). That'd be better than putting it jockless. At least they'll have jocks, but it will be elsewhere. Why not?

From what I've heard, 96.9 has been a sub par performer for quite some time and got no real bounce from the election. It doesn't matter what they call it. If it's not improving, it might be time to look at something else.

Why would anything but a Cumulus station use a Cumulus format-in-a-can like The Touch? And why would any station in a top 10 market run a format-in-a-can in the first place. That's for podunk radio.

Who knows; though CBS sports will be run overnight on 98.5.
Limit 5 FMs in town
Greater: 92.9, 96.9, 102.5, 105.7, 106.7
CBS: 98.5, 100.7, 103.3, 104.1

I consider WJMN-94.5 to be more "Rhythmic CHR" than Urban, so if Greater Media launches such a format, it should be "pure" urban.

You'll likely see a change in call letters, and such a change will likely take place on or around New Year's Eve.

I could also see the WTKK talk format moving to 92.9, with WBOS being "blown up".

I don't know if the latter would happen. Maybe, but since the signals for 96.9 and 92.9 are probably simpler, why bother moving one? Also 92.9 has no DJs = saves money. The new format for 96.9,
if it does happen, might be the same.
Imagine a 60s, 70s, 80s "variety" station with a rhythmic-R&B bent, something the Harbor
doesn't usually touch...

Why bother moving and having to print up new stationery etc.?

According to bostonradio.org, both have sticks on the Pru with backups on FM-128 (Newton).
The signal range on their (not totally accurate) maps are pretty much identical. Why bother
moving talk to the 92.9?

A music station might have a younger demo or a broader demo, more age groups. etc.

What I find interesting is that in addition to the "beat" registrations, they also registered Power969.com (which suggests CHR) and Variety969.com (which suggests something like WHBA). It will be interesting to see what happens.

My bet is on Gen-X gold. 101.7 doesn't have a strong enough signal. Something between 70s-based WROR and 90s-based WBOS. Probably leaning pop rather than rock.

That's jockless WBOS.

Great point - WBOS costs nothing to run, while 24 hours of talk show hosts must cost a fortune.

Agree about WJMN, but Rhythmic AC - Greater Media style - will likely be a blend of recurrents that you'd hear on WBMX, but going way further back to the disco era. Might even play old school Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock for example, although I can't imagine GM having any stomach for rap.
