96 Rock Cincinatti's Pure rock

DJJack1 said:
I dunno.....is Max flopping cuz nobody wants a Jack format, or is it because the signal sucks....or both?

It's because of the signal. Not like the programming is that great either, but it's not any worse than the other stations.

I predict this will be the end of 949 The Sound. Either Bonneville will flip it to Movin or a LoveFM format like they have in Chicago.

Why not a "Jack"-type format?

Jack is ultimately a "jacked up" classic hits format. Hence..it would hurt WGRR.

Well I hope you all remember the woman that runs Cumulus in Cincy used to work for Clear Channel That could be why 96Rock sounds just like WEBN minus the classic album rock. Have you noticed the guy that says 96Rock in the station id is the same one Clear Channel uses?

Max FM came close to beating Mix 94.1 a few times last year on their weak signal so it could be popular if it was on a big signal like 94.9.

Bonneville had Jack FM format in DC called George but that station is supposed to be sold to Radio One who is currently running it on an LMA as Praise 104 so they do have experience in the variety format.

It's a start, we got the format change, now to tweak the music. If you all remember, 949 the Sound played similar to 'EBN in their first weeks, then went into the indie-alternative direction.

70's, 80's up to 1993 Hard Rock is what is needed here. Mix in a few newer tunes, but not too many. Please Oh please dont go into the direction of 'EBN. It only takes about 15 "Best of" cd's (AC/DC, Lynard Skynard, G'N'R, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anything Chris Cornell, Anything Clapton, Rolling Stones, Godsmack, Nirvana, Alice In Chains & Stone Temple Pilots) to program that station.

Give me a set of Sammy Hagar, followed by Poison, then by ALice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult (you cant have too much cow bell), Boston, Whitesnake, Van Halen, The Cult, Queensryche, pre-Black albumn Metallica, then throw in a rare tune from Head East, Triumph & pre-Pump albumn Aerosmith! A set like that would truely be 96Rock!

just my 2 cents, I might owe you some change back!

I wonder if they will revive the top of the hour ID's from 25 years ago? Remember, "WSKS Hamilton/Cincinnati's:

.....Kick Ass Rock and Roll!"

.....Rock and Roll Bitch!"

.....Balls to the wall Rock and Roll!"

then, "96Rock"

But seriously the demo has found other sources for music. The last time it was 96 Rock Randy Michaels ran the show and he fought a hell of a fight and couldn't beat WEBN. 96.5 in any form has never been successful mostly because of it's antenna location.

Here's a question, I know the original 96Rock was sacrificed in the merger that became Jacor. I was told Randy changed it to Country to take listeners away from WUBE and help WLW. Did the buyer have to keep the format Country as part of the sales agreement?

I Still remember wearing a 96 Rock tee shirt when I was a kid. It had that Kick Ass Rock N Roll slogan on it ;D

...and I was wearing a Q102 shirt ;)

Actually the best format for 96.5 is Hispanic, but that's just an opinion.

Glad to see I'm not alone in my thoughts! Btw, I've heard nothing in the first hour that would lead me to believe that they'll be any kind of threat at all to the Frog. This will do about that same as New Rock 97.3 did. 2 shares with gusts up to 2.5. What a shame.

You're not alone... the stick doesn't have coverage in many areas, and Cumulus may have missed the opportunity to latch onto that entire demo you're speaking of. It would be a great flanker for WGRR, but it doesn't look like that's in the cards.

The voice over guy for 96Rock is not the same guy as WEBN. One, 99.99% of the time the voice over contract is market exclusive. Secondly, its not the same voice, just both have similar deliveries and tones.

She had nothing to do with the format choice. Cumulus' John Dickey and Rock VP Val Garris make that call.

WEBN's longtime "big voice" is John Wells. I believe he's been on 'EBN since 1984-85. Wells and CC Tom Owens go way back to their days in Dallas where Owens was Wells' PD.

I believe WEBN's "gen X" VO is Mike Bratton.

96rock's VO is Brian Christopher aka "BC". He also happens to do PM drive for CC San Diego's KIOZ.

He and Chris Corley are both on CC Toledo's WIOT.

"BC" has also been on WKLS, on air and as a VO. Plus MANY other stations; DC 101, etc, etc

Cumulus should've went country. Yes, Bonneville has WUBE. But WYGY, a class A (2550watts) is sucking. WFTK, a Class B (19kw) would've take down WYGY, and even give WUBE some competition. More $$$ in country demos than rock demos, especially the 18-34s

Country = Cash.
True, but the non-compete with WUBE is still in effect. They have until sometime in 2008, I think

That's a shame. Cumulus does country very well.

"True, but the non-compete with WUBE is still in effect. They have until sometime in 2008, I think."

I would tend to think the non-compete would techinically be with WYGY since it was involved in the deal. Secondly, Cumulus can't touch country until 2010.

Brian christopher wow thats a name from many years ago in louisville ky.He use to program wlrs when it was at 102.3 like in the early to mid 80s i always wondered what happenend to him.He got to work for wlrs when it was locally owned!!!
