96 Rock

Change of pace......someone had to introduce a new topic; there's too much on here about what 101.1 "might" do and 94.1

So, are there any thoughts around here on Raleigh's 96Rock?

Initial thoughts: "Everything that rocks" is ridiculous. I can think of hundreds of bands and songs that "rock" in some form or another but aren't being played. Then again, my concept of "rock" is extremely eclectic so maybe I have no right to speak, but I'm sorry-- 96Rock's isn't. Nothing revolutionary is happening with the music. Stop pretending it is. I'll feel like their promos are preaching to me every time I don't like all the same old classic rock songs they play. “Everything” would imply so much more than what is being played. That’s all too it.

The promos and style of the station are also painful. I'm never liked stations which attack other stations or companies on the air. The average listener doesn't know [or care] who Clear Channel is, so hearing 96rock constantly make subtle and not so subtle references really gets annoying. I could say much more—but most of it would be absolute personal opinion that doesn’t belong here.

On a positive note, while I personally can’t stand it [I never was a fan of what is “between” songs,] 96Rock’s air staff has passion. In this day and age that’s a good thing, and you can hear the passion in their speech and attitudes. Again, it drives me nuts—but I have to respect it. Everyone who works there really cares, something that speaks volumes today.

But, that’s really where the compliments end.

I agree about attacking other station groups on the air, but if you consider the history (many of the higher-ups are ex Clear Channel employees), you can kinda understand the bitterness AND their passion to win. I would say it seems to be characteristic of Curtis Broadcasting. And, as you stated, passion is a good thing!

Not commenting on attacking the competition, though the rule I've always heard is only do it if they're ahead of you in the ratings. But... a couple years ago the Jacobs Media people had done research that showed a large segment of the population did indeed know the name Clear Channel and in a very negative way.

Oh yeah, forgot to say, "long time listener, first time caller".

;D How about P1 Listener.. How Gos'h

;D Se Se! Senorita, Senor Dees' Senor' Thomas etc...

I heard 96 Rock use a promo liner that said something like "everything that rocks...on shuffle" last night, and it made me think "Man I wish I had an Ipod so I could have some songs I really want to hear and not what they are telling me to hear." Then it kicked off Poison's "Nothing But A Good Time" and I reeeeeeeeeeealy wanted an Ipod.

Not that 96 Rock is terrible or anything, just that one promo liner made my mind wander from "Everything that Rocks" to some other source of listening pleasure that's not 96 Rock. It seemed counterproductive....

Now if you don't dig Poison you're just too old for the demographic. Poison is ALWAYS cool.

So what was wrong with 96 Rock being an Active Rock station?? It seems that more and more new Rock is coming out and it's taking over Top 40. I understand that there is a gap left by RDU in Raleigh, but there are NO new rock stations in Raleigh or Greensboro. THE END gets almost as man listeners as The Buzzard in Greensboro, so why abandon new rock? I don't understand. Must be too wet behind the ears to understand.

I do agree that the attacks on other stations are annoying.
