97.1 JAMZ Gone Finally It's OVER!!!!

> THANK YOU

97.1 The River, Classic Hits The songs I have heard so far have been a mix of what you might hear on 96 rock and Dave fm. Maybe they are trying to put the final nail in Dave's coffin.

I can't see anyone wanting to finish off Dave except for CC, to assist 96.

Maybe they are trying to put the final nail in Dave's

The River is here

I just spoke with Chris Wegmann. The River launched at noon. They plan to run commercial free for the month of January. It will target 25-54 men, playing rock hits from the late 60s through the late 80s with the usual suspects, the Cars, the Eagles, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, the Police, et. al.

Unlike Jamz, which operated in combo with Kiss, the River will have its own sales staff and PD, who has not been hired yet. Chris brought in a guy from Tampa, which has the Eagle, a similar Cox run classic stations, to put together the first incarnation. Chris promises 8 units an hour, fewer than Cox's standard 10, somethiing Chris said worked at Cox's country station in Houston. TV ads will begin on Wednesday, he added.

Chris said they did research and found a hole between 96rock and Dave FM. It's going to be a softer than 96rock with a narrower, more hit-based playlist. In other words, sort of like Z93 circa 2003. In fact, the Eagle in Tampa played 455 different songs the entire year, according to Mediabase 24/7 and maintains a 300 song playlist--just like B98.5.

If anything, the station will better align itself to the demographics of its north-skewing signal and pick up some of the younger disenfranchsed Fox listeners.

Here's a typical couple of hours with the Eagle in Tampa from yesterday:

I agree. Jamz was the biggest waste of a 100,000-watt major market FM since Marconi invented the radio, turned it on and heard Steve Goss.

We were only a half day into the new year when the first major change came. I expect it's a harbinger of things to come in 2006.

WE ALL KNEW IT WAS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. AN URBAN STATION IN ATL WITH HORRIBLE MUSIC AND NO JOCKS EQUALS FAILURE.

THANK GOD. It almost has the old sound of Fox ..Much better than crappy Dave and 96 whatever

now that poster in my living room of the fox theater with the marquee reading "Fox 97 playing the classic hits of the 60's, 70's and 80's celebrates three years in Atlanta" finally makes sense again. 97.1 has almost come full circle...

Huh? Atlanta has enough Spanish stations? I thought it only had one Spanish station on the FM dial (Viva).
Now just to clarify something, I'm white and don't speak any Spanish. The way I see it Atlanta has way more Rock stations then the typical major market. There's 2 Modern Rock stations, a Triple A station, and now 2 Classic Rockers. At the same time, Atlanta has 2 Urban stations, an Adult R&B station, a CHR/Rhythmic, and a Gospel station. Believe it or not Atlanta is pretty spoiled with the amount of format choices available on its FM dial. I don't know if Atlanta's ever had it so good!

If you dont like 'Urban' music nor Spanish-languaged formats, then simply one station of each is too much.

Cox could've made JAMZ competitive if it really wanted to...but they didn't intent for it to be. There's definitely space for another urban-formatted station...but it'll most likely take an approach WVEE, WALR, and WHTA aren't directly taking.
______________
What, you were expecting me to make sense for a change?

The Misses and I are having a great evening jammin to this great music, that
you can really jam to.. We think it was a great change, What do you think?

Odd choice. Considering that 96 Rock and Dave have little more than a handful of listeners between them, is there really a big enough format hole to make this work? My guess is Bob Neil somehow believes the River will also steal listeners away from Lite, but I don't buy it. The River format will easily pull in better numbers than Jamz did, but that's not necessarily the same thing as building a successful station. I'd call this one a missed opportunity.

I definitely agree. Cox slept on this one. You can't compete with other stations unless you can compete with them at every level. The no-talk format seemed interesting at first but quickly became stale. There has been ample time to inject more life and direction for Jamz. I honestly think that it's a missed opportunity. Playing R&B Hits from the 80's thru now could have been done better than they did it, and should have been done better than they did it. I know for a fact that they had talented jocks working behind the scenes (board-ops, remotes) and their talents were not utilized. Any format, not just urban will fail if it doesn't have "producers" -- that is, people constantly trying to improve the sound, image, and structure of the station. The real failure is with the GM & PD...they knew it was sinking and just let it.

Uh, wasnt this station called Mix 105.7 ?

And isnt this precisely the kind of tight, predictable format that Ipods and satellite radio are in the process of steamrolling over?

For a station like this to have any chance, it has to send out a nostalgic vibe through the formatics, promos, liners and overall image. It cant just be about the music when you're already overlapping tunes with Dave, 96, Lite and 98.5. (I always thought 80's 105.3 MAX could have worked if it didnt sound like a 21st century station outside of the music.)

ideas: maybe some retro jingles...a jock coming out of a break right into the song intro instead of playing a jimgle or carted liner..."flashback vintage" commercials and actualities. Put some effort into it, Cox!

The winner in all of this is Barnes. Now he has a place to work when Dave gets blown up. I dont think he has burned any bridges with Cox.

80s to the Max didn't even work in Chattanooga. Clear Channel flipped it to Adult Hits formatted Max FM.

Sounds like this particular Cox station is copying their new Classic Hits Station, in Birmingham Alabama. I have been listening to The Eagle 106.9, for a time now and haven't been too impressed with it.

I wonder why they didn't name it "The Fox"?

I am the ONLY person in America that loved the music mix on 97.1... that may be the reason that it failed, or maybe it had to do with the fact that you would hear "V-103" mentioned on the air more than "97-1 Jams"... hmmm. I will miss 97.1 when I travel into Atlanta. I know, I know, I am the only one.

I think that the format would have worked, it was on the wrong signal and programmed by the wrong company.
