Well, GM has rock pretty well covered between active rock on WMMR 93.3, classic rock on WMGK 102.9 and classic hits with 95.7 Ben. Plus sports talk on WPEN. And, three of the four are male oriented. So, it will more likely be something to attract the female audience.

Classical? Doubtful - commercial classical stations can do ok if they have a legacy, but a start-up is unheard of in this day and age.

Given GM's successes with soft ACs, they could go that way to slip in with a softer AC than B-101. I suppose it depends to a degree on what happens with Sunny and WJJZ. GM does not have much experience with dance formats, so that seems unlikely.

Nope, my guess is "the new Magic 97.5".

Why couldn't GM retain the current format?

Because it would compete with MGK, even though the current Hawk format focuses on Jersey and the suburbs of Philly, where MGK is more City-oriented.

You are correct, sir. Mmmmm so what direction would they go in? GM is not known for being big spenders so my guess would be something that does NOT require a lot of bucks. A variation of AC could be cheaply done but would it make a dent in the market with the likes of Ben, Sunny and B101? As a former employee of GM, I think it will be quite interesting to see what they do with a "new" station.

Actually..it would make more sense for them to target males because they could sell spots for the station with the others.

Very Bad News, that kills any hope that a full time Active Rocker will emerge from the dust of the old 97.5. If some other company, (with the exception of R1), took it over, there would of been a chance for the format, but now it looks dead in the water. JJZ will be Dance oriented urban, Sunny will tweak even further into a soft AC, the Q will stay status-quo, R1's will stay urban and Jazz, all the other stations seem well put. I still think a wild-card might be OGL, if and when YSP yaks full time come fall.

Hey Julius, congratulations... I heard you got the 10-3 shift at WPST. It was in R&R. Hey when do you start. We want to listen.

How about---- LITE FM---WLTP-FM--97.5 ???? (AC format ) (WBEB Needs some stronger competition!) (sorry Jerry!)

I'm surprised more cities do not have a LITE FM----like WLTW ---NYC. OR---is the term--Lite FM controlled/owned by clear channel? I don't think so.

why would Greater Media announce now---they plan new format/call letters for 97.5 FM? do they think the other Philly stations will fly into a panic ?

Greater Media likes to use "Magic" as their moniker for soft AC. Which I still think is the best bet for their new acquisition. It would not compete with any of their other stations and would provide a foothold in a demo that they do not currently have in the market (females).

And, their "Magic 106.7" in Boston does very, very well.

As much as some here on the board may like rock, it won't happen with this transaction. It would not be a good business move for a company that already has that base well covered.

Actually, I agree! Not that PHILLY has too many rock stations, they don't! However, GM has too many in their cluster and this was a way for them to buy out the competition. Also, if they wanted to do Alt.Rock, wouldn't they have morphed MMR in that direction once they scored Preston and Steve, like so many of us WISHED they would do?

Lite AC sounds plausible, but it seems B101 is a tough nut to crack.

Hot Talk wouldn't fare too well up against Free FM.

Country? WXTU might be vunerable, given the huge complaint about them is their AC-ish presentation (as has been posted here before), so that might make sense.

GM don't do urban, so no worry about further oversaturation.

Here's a thought....might GM bring fulltime classical back to Philly? I believe the WFLN calls are once again in play.

Sports...I'm not too sure. WPEN doesn't have enough sports to facilitate a move to FM as that would be the only appeal (sports in FM Stereo, a la the Eagles). I would actually see WIP on FM before WPEN.

GM didn't alter the format any when Preston and Steve came because they do actually believe it wasn't broke...they'll leave 'mmr how it is because of the heritage thing and all the listeners they've had for 30 some odd years. They are not gonna screw with that. Now, 97.5, hmmm. They better do something because YSP is incorporating a ton of 90's alt music into their playlist. I almost fell off my chair this weekend when I heard Jimmy Eat World, The New Radicals, etc. ON WYSP. I doubt they are trotting out that music to try to compete with YonXPN. YonXPN isn't going to be a re-incarnated Y-100. Alternate rock has changed so much even since Y-100 went off the air, they don't even play the same bands now. Philly needs a niche alt-rock station that plays 'oldies alt' like Garbage, Nada Surf, etc.
