97.9: Any whispers yet?

Hard to believe that none of you guys who are actually in radio have no clue what Clear Channel is going to put on 97.9 after WPKX goes exclusively to 100.9. Is anything being talked about other than right-wing talk minus Rush, which has been a rumor for a long time now?

Ok, who gave it away? How did you find out they were going to start off with a Whispers marathon? I'm just wonderig if they will start off with "and the beat goes on" or "Rock Steady".

It's one of the better kept secrets. I'm surprised it hasn't leaked. I'm at one of the top 5 groups and have heard nothing... nobody at Cumulus or Saga has heard anything either. These days, it's rare to know somebody who actually still WORKS for Clear Channel, so I suppose that helps with preventing leaks.

I can't really see the roof of CityPlace so I can't tell if work's been started up there, but I know that CC hasn't applied for a license to cover or for program test authority yet.

Going off a bit on a tangent, Mike Fitzpatrick may be able to help me on this one... but I believe that when 97.9 moves to City Place Hartford, it'll be the only commercial station with transmitting facilities within the Hartford city limits... is that correct?

If so, another fun fact would be that the only commercial station with transmitting facilities within Hartford city limits isn't in fact licensed to Hartford, but Windsor Locks.

Wasn't the ESPN 98.1 radio thing an experimental license anyway? Thos things aren't really meant to be permanent in the first place.

WPOP never promoted 98.1 on the air, right? So who even knew it existed except for radio geeks? "Normal" people (the 99 percent of the radio-listening nation) who punch presets all the time never found this low-powered relay.

I believe there are only two stations transmitting from within the Hartford city limits.
WRTC 89.3 and WQTQ 89.9 are it.

Didn't WCCC 1290 transmit from within the city limits of Hartford at one time? I'll have to ask John Ramsey.

WDRC is "right on the edge" on Blue Hills Avenue, but in Bloomfield.
There was a LPTV on top of the WTIC-TV building when it was downtown, but I believe they're up at WCCC's tower in West Hartford now.

Do pirates selling commercial time count?? Haha.

As for 97.9 it's still on from the top of Provin Mountain in Feeding Hills.

The low-power TV station was the old W13BF channel 13 (Telemundo), with studios on Maple Avenue. The last I saw, they were on analog channel 50. As for WCCC-AM 1290, I think their transmitter was on or near South Main Street/Farmington Avenue in West Hartford originally.

John's site says that WCCC AM was on S. Quaker Lane in West Hartford from sign-on until 1990, when it moved to the FM site also in West Hartford.

Was passing through the radio dial and heard a promo for WPOP once again being the Hartford home for New York Yankees baseball. If I may presume, looks like the new 97.9 will not be going all-sports.

Read the following on the Radio Insight website. Lance Venta on December 6, 2011 in Domain Insight, Headlines

As 97.9 WPKX prepares to make its move from Springfield, MA to Hartford, Clear Channel has registered a number of domains giving our first clues at the format the station will take.

Interesting. I wonder how CC would attack a dominant station like WRCH. A significantly different playlist? (Softer? Harder? More '70s titles? More currents?) Between Hartford's WRCH, WTIC-FM and WHCN, not to mention WHYN-FM and WMAS in Springfield, the market is pretty much super-saturated with every form of AC except for the sleepy soft AC that has gone by the wayside in most markets. My money is still on CC's taking 1410's sports format to FM and putting some sort of cheapo third-tier right-wing talk on 1410 or selling it to a leased-ethnic or dollar-a-hollar religion operator.

How about a not-so-cheapo progressive talk station as we already have two right wing gas bag stations already in the market? Hey there's an idea, CC!!!! As for music the only genre of music I don't think Hartford has is a full-time commercial classical station or a FM classic urban/R&B station which WKND plays these days. BTW,is it me or does KND's signal sound like a kid's bike with playing cards stuck in the spokes? The sound absolutely sucks!!

Forgot to mention that WPOP was a news/talk station before its incarnation as ESPN radio. I used to listen to AJ Austin mornings. While a conservative, he was nowhere near as loony as the current crop of nationally syndicated nut jobs or even WDRC's Dan Lovallo. POP used to also air Jeff Katz in the early 90's on afternoon drive time, before he flew away (happily) to Boston, so there is precedent there!!!

I would have to be able to pick up the WKND-AM signal here in New Britain to make a judgment on their sound quality. As for the format, I hope it's not another talk station! I already don't listen to WDRC-AM 1360 now. Also, I almost never listen to WTIC-AM 1080 either with their horrible sound quality. It would be nice to move ESPN Radio over from 1410 to this new station. Question is...what happens to WPOP-AM 1410? ???

John Ramsey posted that 97.9 WPKX began broadcasting from the roof of CityPlace Hartford this afternoon at 12:33pm at half power while awaiting FCC approval. WRNX is also on from it's new site and is waiting for its license from the FCC.
