97.9: Any whispers yet?

It should also be noted that while 97.9 WPKX is still running country, it's running CC Premium Choice country with no liners at all. WPKX posted on their facebook page that they're officially on 100.9.

Which explains why I didn't recognize the jock who was on this afternoon while I was driving home and why he was interviewing Kelly Pickler.

WRNX is also on from it's new site and is waiting for its license from the FCC.

So I take it that this is 100.9's permanent new signal. I realize it's a Springfield market station, but I'm disappointed that it is scratchy in the parts of Bristol, Connecticut where I used to receive 97.9 crystal clear. Too bad. I guess I'll have to force myself to learn to like Country 92.5 WWYZ. :( I wish they could've moved MIX to 100.9 FM and KIX to 93.1 FM.

At around 12:30 this afternoon WPKX shut off their Provin Mountain (MA) transmitter and turned on their new set up atop City Place in downtown Hartford. The signal from the new site seem to be getting out really well. Had no trouble hearing them all the way out Rt 202 to the west of Hartford to the Torrington line. Other reception reports are welcome.

John Ramsey posted that 97.9 WPKX began broadcasting from the roof of CityPlace Hartford this afternoon at 12:33pm at half power while awaiting FCC approval.

I was able to pick up 97.9 loud and clear last night in a parked car near the Meriden-Wallingford line at the top of the Rt 5 hill. Spotty signal when driving.

Is this new City Place transmitter already putting out the directional pattern to null towards Norwich? It sounds like I'm listening to a digital music channel on cable: No jocks, no liners, no sweepers...just music. I haven't even heard a single legal ID or anything. Again, I'm in the south end of New Britain and the signal seems relatively stable so far. Of course, I'm only 10 miles from City Place and the XL Center.

I'm getting a usable signal in a brick building in Meriden where 97.9 was inaudible before. Should be no problem here at full power, now just hope the format will be something worth listening to. I'm still amazed how tight the secrecy has been on this.

Yes, the antenna is directional.

It sounds like that because the Clear Channel Premium Choice country feed is going out with no liners. It's just a place-holder.

Noon just blew by with no ID, legal or otherwise. Are the FCC rules different for stations in limbo like this one? I remember still hearing legal WLVH IDs on 93.7 even after the ownership had gone broke and the station was relaying NOAA Weather Radio full-time.

Some domain names registered which MIGHT be used, depending on the format, include ESPN and 979 as part of the URL; could be just faking us out, or not--who knows. If they did put ESPN on 97.9 (w/ Yankees
games etc.) the 1410 could poss. go to talk (Premiere shows? pulled off other stations if need be?)
Currently CC has WHYN up in Holyoke for local show, Beck, Rush, Howie, Savage etc.

While in Hartford, CBS' WTIC AM has Rush (for now),Hannity (often pre-empted or truncated due to
Sox in season), and Coast to Coast; Buckley's WDRC has no Premiere shows from what I can see.
Some Premiere hosts can be heard via stations in Springfield area, New Haven, etc.
So who knows if 1410 would go talk, or 97.9 for that matter.

The domain names hint at: ESPN,AC,rhythmic, etc (Star, Magic, Smooth, Mix)

Kix 97.9 is now Kix100.9 http://www.mykix1009.com/main.html

CTListener: I think it used to be that you had to do a legal ID anywhere from :50 past to :10 past, but maybe as long as you do it once an hour as close as possible in given programming to the top. A station
of course can quickly whip out their actual legal ID maybe :10 before or :10 after, while the top of the
hour can be an identifier where you can get away with a nickname and a BIGGER city nearby.
As long as you do the actual calls and COL, etc.

EXAMPLE
"W--- Windsor Locks"

once an hour...at the top of the hour you could do a nickname and a BIGGER city

(Jingle) "Magic 97-point-9, Hartford!"
(Not saying that's the format, just an example). As long as they do the legal ID at one point!

There doesn't seem to be ANYTHING local about what's going out on 97.9 now. There's a DJ, but it's a generic CC voice and he never mentions Springfield, Hartford, WPKX, or 97.9. No jingles, no station IDs at any time. It appears to be a clean feed of CC's basic hit-country format.

WPOP used to air ElRushblow until 1992, when CC pulled him off the 5000 watt station and started airing him on WTIC and their 50,000 watts. I am going to speculate that CC won't pull Limbaugh off WTIC because of its strong signal. WTIC also airs Hannity late night after WDRC AM dumped him due to low ratings to give Lovallo his own show. The new 97.9 comes in very well here in Windsor Locks, which is understandable since its future ID is Windsor Locks. If Premiere shows are being added to the new 97.9, one vote for Randi Rhodes. And votes for Dial-Global's Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann and maybe Michael Smerconish.

I picked up 97.9 while driving in Cheshire and the northern part of Hamden tonight. Sometimes a good signal and sometimes spotty. Not bad if the station is currently only on half power. I could see an ESPN 97.9 making up for the lack of a decent night signal between Hartford and New Haven. I'm too far north for WAVZ and too far south for WPOP.

I'm going to be heading for Mohegan Sun tomorrow. I'd imagine I'll be losing 97.9 by the time I leave Middletown if the null protecting WCTY is as deep as it's supposed to be.

WHCN-FM 105.9 just gave a major hint about 97.9 FM: ESPN Radio will be moving to that station shortly, with the ESPN Radio voice ending the spot with "Game on!". No mention of the Yankees.

May as well plug in sports if your main talk components are on a 50,000-watt blowtorch...

According to the news section of this web site, The move to ESPN on 97.9 happened as of 6 am this morning. Currently "Mike and Mike" are on 97.9 and are still on WPOP AM 1410. Your guess is as good as mine as to what goes on WPOP,since I doubt CC will simulcast ESPN on AM.
