There is a new station called 97.9 The Fax Machine from George West, TX - weird name. It says on stationintel that it just signed on and played 80s hits. Has anyone heard this? I thought 80s stations died out by now? And why would a Hispanic radio company pick that format? Owner is Hispanic Target Media Inc. This station is near the Corpus Christi area.

They are playing more of a soft hits of the 80's format. Almost easy listening 80's stuff. What kind of name is The Fax Machine? They couldn't come up with anything better then that? lol What does that have to do with the 80's? I thought Xerox made the first fax machine in the 60's? They built the station a few weeks ago but had been broadcasting a silent stereo carrier. You can hear it in Corpus Christi but it's pretty hit or miss depending on where you are driving. KBXX does tend to step all over it and overpower it (especially on the South Side of Corpus Christi).

Even with what they paid for some of those allotments, there was no real way they could've afford stations in San Antonio or even Corpus. I believe they got a substantial bidding credit due to being minority owned and a small business. So, they would've paid a fraction of what shows as their winning bid.
Fax machines weren't common until the 80's. So, I get the reference. However, I agree with you that it's a pretty lousy name for a radio station.

KRIK always seems to be off the air. I guess that's what happens when you have Texas radio station owners who live in Arizona. Not very easy to maintain and keep up with these sticks.
As for the Fax Machine, maybe they are still working out bugs or they are just off the air like half of Corpus Christi is/was today. With wind gusts reaching upwards of 60 mph today KEDT, KBNJ, KKBA, KZFM, and KNDA were all off the air. I think backup generators kept a lot of other stations in that vicinity on the air.

Strangely nothing here seemed to go off the air in San Antonio except for a translator, which is now back. There was a whole lot of wind, though. Guess we got lucky.

Seems to me like 93.5 KGWT, 100.5 KRIK, and 103.9 KJJS could make a nice South Texas rural network of some kind. But I think the company's mission was to build stations here-and-there and then lease them to other operators... though since 97.9 The Fax Machine gives them two stations in one market, I have really no idea. Hispanic Target Media seems to be somewhat of a comedy of errors.

I tuned in Friday for a second. They were on but barely audible. They don't have much of a signal to get out very far. You won't be able to hear it in SA. The 48dBu doesn't even make it to Pleasanton. Weird format. Pretty obscure 80's stuff the few times I've tuned in.
