970 WWDJ Hackensack to Become 970 WNYM "The Apple"

And speaking for the launch of 970 "The Apple", I found this one on Reelradio which is the WWDJ collection. Long before 970 now becomes a talk station as WNYM, it was top 40 for a 4 years from 1971 until 1974 when it was WJRZ at the time as a country station. This station wasn't a huge success in a 4-year run until April Fools Day of 1974 when the station was flipped to an inspirational/religious format prior to the switch to "The Apple".

Here is a link to the WWDJ collection as seen on Reelradio. I'm just trying to let you know that if you want to sign up for Reelradio or listen to this repository, you'll gotta pay for it, too much money. I used to listened to the airchecks of WWDJ on Reelradio for free. that was many years ago, and today, when Reelradio started as a paid subscription site, it sucked, because I'm not going to sign up and paid, that was a waste of money. Anyway, here is a link.

970 should have gone country---salem runs a country station in Honalulu.

That's funny! WWDJ in fact WAS country in the 60s! Lee Arnold worked there before going to WHN.

Not exactly. It was country as WJRZ. The WWDJ callsign started when it switched to Top 40.
Are you sure? I used to listen to it constantly as a country station and I also recall the WWDJ calls.

For a number of years, WWDJ had a Christian music format, mostly "CCM", "Contemporary Christian Music". I find it hard to believe that this format was failing, seeing as there are so very few stations running anything even similar to it, around here! With the demise of WLIX AM in the 90's, I'd have thought WWDJ could have picked-up some of those listeners, too. I wonder what happened?

In any case, the Fairfield County area of Connecticut has exactly ZERO Christian music stations. Part of New Haven County also has zero.

I worked for WFIF in Milford for 20 years, so I know this area quite well. There is a very definite need for a "CCM" station, here. Done right, it will prosper. I know it will.

How about co-owned WMCA on 970, or Family Radio on 94.7 and 88.9? Or Star 99.1 from NJ? Or WLIX on Long Island with their 3 or 4 translators. Plus other brokered time here and there, and even some religious pirates. I don't think this area has any shortage of "Christian" radio.

You cannot hear them here. Yes, WMCA is audible, but rather weak. They also carry a considerable amount of non-Christian programming, and ZERO Christian music.

Family Radio? Surely, you jest! It is little more than a sad joke, what with that far-out character Harold Camping. I won't even go into the problems/issues that man has. :( Most of what I have heard played musically there is ANCIENT. 'nuff said. ;)

WLIX-LP is LOW POWER, and unlistenable in CT. There are a few places where they can be heard on hilltops along the coast, but it's very spotty. Their signals are VERY weak, for obvious reasons. (They're all well under 100 watts.)

Star 99.1 is completely obliterated in CT by WPLR, on the same frequency.

As I said... there is NOTHING on the southern and southwestern CT airwaves that plays current Contemporary/Inspirational Christian music.

I don't remember 970 playing much music either so I don't really see your point. Bottom line is, Salem basically had redundant formats on 570 and 970, and it made sense for one of them to change and to feature their talk lineup, which also enabled Salem to say that they are clearing their talk shows in market #1.
