Has anyone heard whats going on over there? The website is changed and all i've heard all morning is "HOT 98-1 IS DEAD." WTF?

They're playing Urban right now it still sounds like, but the website still says it's dead.

This is a surprise, the station sounded horrible but the ratings were decent. Any guesses on the new format?? FM Talk? Smooth Jazz? Oldies? Those are the only three I can think of that nobody else is doing that there'd be a chance of success with.

Fm Talk wouldn't be bad. WORD is sitting on a HEAP of cash with no compeditor, and Cox does have a pretty good roster of talk talent between Boortz and Clark Howard.

What the hell would they call it?

They shouldn't do anything to it. They just had an up book, and are less than a share behind WFBC. Stay the course, work on it, and tweak some. OF COURSE that makes sense AND it requires patience! :-\

Well this is not good. I thought 98.1 had a CP in place to cover more of the area all the way down to Newberry? What's the deal on that? Anyway, it will be sad if Hot 98.1 leaves the airwaves.

Any sign of an air staff? The station sounds the way it always does, to me. This is a definate shock....it was never a real top performer like 107.3, but it did pretty well, especially with the limited signal in Spartanburg.

I just don't know what else could be done with that signal. They should do 60s and 70s, FM talk, or Sports, logically. There's just nothing else they could really do and make a go of, IMO. I'd like to see a good Smooth Jazz station, but I doubt that's even an idea. This change is just a shocker.

98.1 will be dead...as we know it.

I bet this has to do with their move to their new transmitter. I can't see Cox dismantling their "urban wall" over the Upstate.

This surprises me a lot. I don't see them dropping urban. Maybe they are just rebranding.

FM talk did terrible as 98.1 the Peak, of course the signal hurt them... but look at the big increase when they became Hot 98.1

"Hot 98.1 is dead"... Please... DON'T FALL FOR IT! This is just another station pulling a page from the old bait and switch book... Guaranteed the big announcement will be "We're dead... Dead serious on giving away $1 million" or something corny like that...

Meanwhile, I hear the top country station there airing liners that they're "going Urban" - is Keith Urban coming to town? Same shtick, please, don't fall for it, folks.

Maybe in following in the footsteps of a few large-market station, they will now be known as "The New FRESH Hot 98.1"? ;D

Monday is fast approaching. I checked around with some domains and didn't really come up with much, but I see http://www.981theeagle.com has been registered and it looks like it's never been used by anyone else. Cox has Eagles in quite a few markets, Classic Hits. It would be a pretty dumb format, with all of the competition and all, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

It's strange, but I can't get any sort of "Who Is" information on this domain to come up. Any idea what company this is registered with and who Cox usually uses?

And we have a winner. Just before the Fall Book begins, just a few months after bringing a new PD in, on a pretty successful station? No doubt in my mind, this has stunt written all over it.

according to what I can find, the domain appears to be registered by DOMAINDOORMAN, LLC since 14-Jun-2005.

Just like when WTRG 100.7 up here in Raleigh-Durham said they were going to "sign off" at a certain time a couple years back, and they meant "sign off on some big giveaway."

Unfortunately, the station flipped to another format less than a year later and has gone through severe tweaking since then, so I don't know if that part bodes well for Hot 98.1. :(

yeap...it's a new format switch.

JUST LISTEN @ 5 on Monday afternoon! TO HEAR THE DETAILS!

I am going to say another country station because that's what we all flipp 2.
