98.1 the ticket rumours

I've been hearing rumours that 98.1 will become "the classic rock station" (what 100.3 is now) is this true? I'm not too sure about this but their ratings as a station are dead low. Sorry but Sportz doesn't intrest me and they should invest in a 10KW non directional signal on 540 am.

(Here in Fort Walton Beach, FL)

Rob

I heard Country back after the flip of 100.3 and 93.3, but I think red tape has caused more problems.
A waste of a signal, but what the Hale can anyone do?

Yea..I can see them move the 105.5 to 98.1

But what will become the 105.5? Maybe a smooth jazz station that we can pick up! the 106.3 is so bloody weak

Rob

As a sports fan myself i disagree. I think they just need to improve the station. Get rid of liddy and that guy from fox news and put real SPORTS! content on there. As horrible as it is right now it's still doing pretty good numbers in the fort walton area. Couple that with no competition sports wise, I think it could be a viable format if done right.

Well sports on FM is a waste of space. The station needs to apply for a NON DIRECTIONAL 10 or 25KW 24 hour transmitter on the low end of the AM band. Then the FM can be used for something else.

(We need a high powered AM station down here)

Rob

Now I just heard on 105.5 that a DJ said that there working to move up to 98.1. I don't know who or was it bull crap? Can anyone confirm this? I know you like sportz but this station sucks totally. Local HS sports is ok, but the sportz talk shows are 90 percent commercials, 10 percent show.

Rob

There you go again robfwb.....you just don't decide "hey, let's put a station on 540 non directional with 10kw!"....there are interference contours that have to be met and along the Gulf coast, you have to deal with South America, Mexico and the Caribbean radio treaties that protect their stations....it ain't that simple....are you a broadcaster or a "civilian"?....most of this knowledge is Broadcasting 101 info.

Seems like I heard 98.1 was going to go country as the plan was to swap 98.1 for 105.5 with oh Hale. But, I don't
see why anyone on 105.5 would be saying that on the air since it's owned by Crumulus and Quantum is the "owner
of the hour" of the 98.1 fiasco. This could be pretty fun! Someone on the inside in Destin should have more info.
Is Hale even allowed to show up at any station in the Panhandle?

What a joke.

Qantum does not own 98.1. But their efforts to acquire it made a.. uh.. Quantum leap forward, when a Federal judge ruled in their favor against Star Broadcasting last week. The Cumulus folks have believed all along that they would prevail and have foolishly told people that they will be moving their country station from 105.5 to 98.1.

Something must be done. This is bull. If I had a 100KW transmitter, I sure wouldn't be using it for sports.

Rob

Call Ron Hale and ask him to buy the station, I am sure he'll let you. Seriously, that he's been allowed to
inflict this pain on the market by the FCC, IRS and any other three letter agency is proof that no one
in government protects anyone the are supposed to protect.

Rob, in an hour, what and how many ads do you hear that are local?

Eventually, 98.1 will become a real radio station and a major player in FWB. Maybe THE major player--it's a blowtorch, smack in the middle of the FM dial. However, until the ownership of that bad boy is absolutely settled, ain't nobody gonna invest the kind of ching in that thing that it will take to start slapping other stations around. The risk in time & money is way too great. So, as annoying as it may be, you're likely going to have to wait for the winner to be declared before anything happens.

Hardly any local ads. But then again I listen to mainly Internet radio, XM or 100.3.

Did they recently move the 98.1 transmitter? It was registered as "Holt" Florida (wherever that is)

According to radio-locator, it looks like its in the smack dab of FWB.

Another contestant for 98.1 is Talk Radio 98.1 and 1260 WFTW. Hell, you can't hear 1260 at night unless you live in Denton BLVD in FWB. (my old apartment) Would be nice to be able to hear Coast to Coast without having to fire up my transmitter.

Whoever assigned these AM frequency's should get a boot to the head. Lots of QRM on that part of the spectrum . I listen to C2C AM on WWL with the ever famous RR id every minute. It gets very old.

(I wish I knew where that RR translator was and the power output. There not all from Havana (SP?) Cuba)

Time will tell what will happen.

Rob

Rob ---

You be ever so right on the 98.1 move/translator, etc., the old tower was up in the "black forest" and licensed to
Andalusia, Alabama. It was like 40+ miles from FWB and the signal was spotty and with the curve of the beach it disappeared.
Still, though, it was once one of the absolute best sounding and most diverse classic rock stations when it was WXCR (98one
Classic Rock and the ratings were pretty decent, even with a bad signal. I heard it the day I met it...and I think it's
true up until now..."98.1 was a baby that shouldn't have ever been born." Maybe things will eventually change, but
prior to WXCR and very, very quickly after it was a disaster and a virtual money pit. But, your competition was pretty
limited then (92.1 WMMK Country, 96.5 was the fiasco of Dr. Matowski and tied up unable to go on the air, and had
an amazing 100kw CP --- a guy and a story all of itself; 99 Rock, Coast had just come on as Lite AC and a rough signal,
Mix was just starting after being Jazz (I seem to recall) AC / Wave 102, 105.5 was WYZB Oldies and 106.3 The Seabreeze.
98.1 filled the niche very well despite the signal problem, and I think it did better than it ever did before (and I am 100%
sure after) in the P-cola books. Oh, and it made pretty decent money as 98one. That was a serious surprise and thrill
to all involved. Ah, the only good ole days of 98.1! It's at it's lowest now. Sad.

So Cumulus now owns the ticket? or Starr?

Doesn't Starr own "KROCK"?
and are they a small mom and pop or a division of clear channel?

Rob

I was under the impression that Starr was Ron Hale or his wife, if he's still even married or his sons.
The Evergreen project was a flip for 93.3 and 100.3. Am I right on the frequencies --- 93.3 is now
Coast and 100.3 is K-Rock? Crumulus, should now own 93.3 and gave Hale like $1M for the better
signal along with giving him the smaller stick.

Basically, nobody and everybody probably owns 98.1.

E-Mails Reveal Owner Lied in Process of Selling Radio Station

Forrest Norman
Daily Business Review
February 23, 2007

A federal judge in Miami has given a Delaware company the right to buy a radio station after e-mails revealed that the station's owner lied about trying to sell the station to a rival bidder.

U.S. District Judge Jose E. Martinez granted plaintiff Qantum Communications' motion for summary judgment Feb. 9, giving the private investment firm the right to purchase WTKE-FM in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., for $3 million.

WHAT must be done?
Have you ever BEEN to a radio station? As cceng stated...your civilian status is showing.
No one has a transmitter laying around...just in case...

and tho I know better...what WOULD you use it for?

CR love ya man, but YOU never did actually hear this tin can. Ron Hale should have been
fined for what he did to listeners of the Panhandle. In any other situation, I would agree
with your thought on this.

Who owns Quantum? Is that a small division of Cumulus or a small mom and pop?

I think they own WWAV and MIX?
