You be ever so right on the 98.1 move/translator, etc., the old tower was up in the "black forest" and licensed to
Andalusia, Alabama. It was like 40+ miles from FWB and the signal was spotty and with the curve of the beach it disappeared.
Still, though, it was once one of the absolute best sounding and most diverse classic rock stations when it was WXCR (98one
Classic Rock and the ratings were pretty decent, even with a bad signal. I heard it the day I met it...and I think it's
true up until now..."98.1 was a baby that shouldn't have ever been born." Maybe things will eventually change, but
prior to WXCR and very, very quickly after it was a disaster and a virtual money pit. But, your competition was pretty
limited then (92.1 WMMK Country, 96.5 was the fiasco of Dr. Matowski and tied up unable to go on the air, and had
an amazing 100kw CP --- a guy and a story all of itself; 99 Rock, Coast had just come on as Lite AC and a rough signal,
Mix was just starting after being Jazz (I seem to recall) AC / Wave 102, 105.5 was WYZB Oldies and 106.3 The Seabreeze.
98.1 filled the niche very well despite the signal problem, and I think it did better than it ever did before (and I am 100%
sure after) in the P-cola books. Oh, and it made pretty decent money as 98one. That was a serious surprise and thrill
to all involved. Ah, the only good ole days of 98.1! It's at it's lowest now. Sad.
