98.1 the ticket rumours

Who owns Quantum? Is that a small division of Cumulus or a small mom and pop?

I think they own WWAV and MIX?

Rob

Neither. Qantum (no "u") is a company owned by Nautic Partners, LLC, a private equity firm in Connecticut. Nautic owns dozens of companies in a variety of industries. Qantum is their radio company. Private equity firms make money for their investors by buying low-performing companies--or creating new companies--and then growing them... and selling them. Kind of like "flipping" houses. By keeping these outfits private they avoid the direct pressure of Wall Street, but since their whole business revolves around "buying low and selling high," there is still pressure to grow, grow, grow the revenue and keep expenses as low as humanly possible. Because ultimately it's all about cash flow. The buy-sell window for these kind of outfits is usually 5 to 7 years, because the investors aren't in it for life--they put their $$$ in and they want to get their $$$ back with interest within a reasonable time frame.

Before we let this thread go... (98.1 is just too interesting), does somebody want to 'splain to me about Ron Hale and the lawsuit and all that. What exactly happened?

Just checked the latest Arbitron numbers and the Ticket is NOT dead last, but rather 5th in the market, which is very, very good for sports. There seem to be a lot of very uninformed people on this board. It looks like the Qantum transfer will likely take place in 2009 after the appeal process is heard. Nothing moving very fast. Once it does, the programming on 98.1 will move to KROCK 100.3 according to sources at the station.
