98.5 FM playing classic hits. Translator or pirate?

98.5 FM as of this morning has been playing non-stop Fox Radio News along with gov't PSA's. No oldies this a.m.

Just an FYI.

Dammit. That was one of the two radio presets left on my car … everything else is Sirius/XM.
(Also had KIXI - KRWM.3 -- but that went away when Hubbard's loyalty to Dan Murphy did).

I wasn't aware that KIXI went off KRWM's HD3. Oh well.

I was listening a lot to the oldies on 98.5 FM also... I figured enjoy 'em while they were still on the air. I like a bit of variety in my music, and the oldies that were played on KARR were a good mix.

EDIT TO ADD: I just checked KRWM's HD-3, and it appears to be playing KIXI's programming. John Tesh and KIXI ID's on right now as I type this.

I apologize … wasn't very clear.
The signal did not disappear from the HD … this listener disappeared when I could no longer support the station after they separated with Dan. He was the heart and soul of the station for years and deserved MUCH better treatment.

Understood. Well, at least they're still on the HD3, and in stereo, nonetheless. Right next to the HD2 Christmas music channel.

Wasn't aware of the Dan Murphy thing. I personally didn't know who ran KIXI.

Did I forget to mention in the other thread that I had heard that? I'm good friends with someone who is good friends with him, and she told me about Dan.

Thank you for that information. I definitely heard Familia on 1460, at least twice -- this was probably 3 months ago? Maybe the owner of KARR was running their stream over the air just for the heck of it.

One of life's great DX mysteries. :)

So I need to make a correction, and an apology to Boombox4 here. You did hear Familia programming on 1460.

It turns out that CFC (Centro Familiar Cristiano) had been providing a programming stream to Bustos stations KCKX (Stayton, Or - 1460) and KZGD (Salem, OR - 1390). They had been in the process of acquiring the stations prior to the Covid-19 situation. Since then, Mr. Bustos has turned off many of his AM stations by way of STA, as a way to save money on maintenance and electricity.

So my apologies on this one. I had only found out about the stations recently, as they had not yet been turned over to us for maintenance & monitoring.

No apologies necessary, sir. :) I'm glad I wasn't hearing things, or that my radios weren't glitching on me.

The strange thing is that even with very good radios I never hear a peep from KARR on 1460 anymore. Haven't since the tower was taken down. Just ESPN Yakima and a station out of California at night (a ranchero station out of Santa Rosa). The Oregon station is a rarity at night.

Now I know what I heard.

You would have to be very close to KARR's longwire temporary radiator to be able to pick up a peep, even with a great receiver. If you happen to be on Bellevue's Northrup Way just a bit east of 405 you will have no problem picking it up. However, it is only a walking distance signal. And I don't mean a long walk! LOL. But I am sure it meets the specs of the STA. Mr. Dalke has fairly recently been granted a minor mod to broadcast 740 w days and 19 at night from an actual tower location a little further north of the longwire but I am not sure where that process stands. Or any process stands right now, TBH.

You can actually get a good view of the longwire on google street view.

Type in 12831 NE 21st Pl, Bellevue, WA 98005 on google... thats Easter Seals.... go forward till you see a blue dumpster on your left, its only like one driveeay up, just past a white cargo van... take a left into that driveway by pointing the arrow into it .. then look up and to your left... the wire going horizontally is the support wire.. the wire thats vertical is the transmit wire.. the little loop in the center is liek the insulator, to protect the rest from becoming a radiator... its on the roof of Vetco electronics whos address is one block south on Northup Way. apparently Mr Dalke is friends with the person who owns Vetco

It's running 100 Watts into the wire, probably far less coming out of it

Actually, after making my last post here earlier today I switched on both my Sangean PR-D5 (200mm loopstick inside) and Sangean PR-D14 (similar circuitry -- no idea how large the loopstick is as I haven't taken the back off), and Fox News was coming in on 1460, // to 98.5 FM, so KARR actually can make it as far as Renton from its longwire up there near Kirkland. But not so readable that you can actually hear all the programming. It faded in and out. To compare -- KBRD 680 is totally readable (maybe an S2?) and KGRG-1 is an S1-S3, depending on conditions, and both of those low powered stations are as far, or farther away.

Goes to show what dial position and having a "real" radiator will do for you. I know KGRG has a real tower from their KENU days. And even though KBRD is only 250 watts from Lacey, that tower is very substantial (something like 400 feet tall) and they are nice and low on the dial. I can copy 680 on my car radio no problem in south Snohomish county. That has to be something on the order of 60 miles I would think.

Even better now since CBC Radio One 690, which used to throw their excess 50kW signal south has dropped that to 25kW and shoots it towards Victoria.

I've heard CBU 690 here in Wyoming since they dropped 2 towers and halved power.. comes in right before Laramie, WY sunrise.

Amazing how this thread went from DXing some insignificant FM signal on 98.5, to an insignificant signal on 1460AM. Maybe this thread should be moved to the DX section? That will leave the conversation space to actual radio stations.

Yeah, let's cut the chatter. This board is so deluged with comments that it often takes several minutes a week to read them all.

The thread was about KARR's translator on 98.5 FM firing up.... and the past several posts have been about the translator switching formats, as well as its AM primary signal. I do not see it as 'clutter'. KARR is an actual, licensed station, it's located in the Seattle metro area, the FM translator is audible in much of the area, and we are discussing that.

Aside from this thread and another one about KOMO's 97.7 enhanced translator (which is barely audible in much of the Seattle metro), there has been no activity on this forum since the 18th. It hardly makes this discussion 'clutter'.

Much of what area, Bellevue? The KARR-AM signal is garbage. Jim is keeping it alive in the hope that someday radio values will make a triumphant return to being a sought-after resource. When it comes to that station and it's associated translator; a squadron of pigs will be seeing flying over Bellevue Square before that ever happens.
