98.5 The Beach

Spent some time Saturday at Cocoa Beach...listened to 98.5 The Beach for some time..nice mix of rock 60s and 70s hits..homegrown, but refreshing. They are license to Satellite, Beach hence S-BH...apparently been on the air since 2006.

The Beach has been hotter'n a $2 pistol. They've got the right product in the right place at the right time. Yeah, the signal is weak but look at how they tied 100kw WAOA. They're well operated, have local DJs, and are very pleasant to listen to if you like the 60's and 70's format. Vernon Smith paid a bunch for the license, but it's got legs in the Melbourne market. I'm actually surprised how far their 6000 watts gets them.

Give a lot of credit to Dave Poore, he does an amazing job with the Beach. Add to that Ray Michaels is superb in morning drive, and the Beach is a solid
performer.

The fact that they "tied" WAOA just shows how flawed the Arbitron system is. Dave Poore is a good guy and they have done a great job with the little station. I cannot receive the signal in my office, the only local station that I can't.

One thing I will say, The Beach has done a great job selling advertising in Brevard, they have a lot of unique advertisers and give them a ton of frequency which is needed with the format. Hat's off to Karen, Dave and their team!

Let's be clear here concerning the Beach.... First - they have only one live day part - and Ray does a good job mornings with limited time due to syndicated playlist. If he had a co-host and generated the playlist in house - they would be even more of a player in the market. Paperbill - for a 6KW to tie a 100K with only one live daypart shows how much Cumulus has deluted the product. It (A1A) is no -longer a factor in the market. As to Arbitron being flawed - you have a point. There are demos not totally represented in every book - great when they hit your station and suck when they don't. But - a 100KW tied by a 6KW that has a poor to no signal in the north part of the county - Face it - The station has lost its appeal - even when CHR is at the top of its game music wise.

Live by the numbers die by the numbers, what is the Beach going to do when the books drop in Titusville and they get clobbered since you can't hear them there?

Who generates Beach playlist? I thought they were local owners?

The service including the music scheduling and real time voice tracked jocks is the Waitt Radio Network. They are outstanding. However in the Beaches case, the morning man/PD has also done an incredible job!

The station does sound better than anyone else playing music but...they are not local enough. You want to win this market you have to be the local station..24/7

Yeah, that's what I always hear from folks who aren't happy with their Arbitron... when you've got it, you sell it. When you ain't got it you tell everyone how flawed it is. It is indeed flawed, but the Beach is still hotter'n a $2 pistol.

Perhaps thats how you sold if you ever did....the only numbers I have ever worried about are the cume, and how I can help advertisers reach that audience.
Not sure what you mean about hotter than a $2 pistiol since I have never seen one, but the station has done a good job.

If an advertiser wants an older demo, that is the station to buy!

Interestingly, you can't hear CC's WMMB in Titusville either. Nor their simulcast station WMMV, at least not very well and not much of Titusville. But MMB/MMV have proven that you can do a lot with puny little signals, haven't they? Why not the Beach?

WAOA certainly isn't pulling it's demographic very well these days, nor is WHKR. Cume-U-Less is still trying to recover from its severe surgical procedures.

Hmmm only 300 or so people showed up to the 3 Dog Night concert, the Beach blew it out for a month of promotion.

When either WAOA or WHKR have an event tons of folks show up....so much for arbitrion

Check out this Sunday's Florida Today Article:

http://www.floridatoday.com/article/20100314/NEWS01/3140318/1006

Organizers estimated that 2,500 to 3,000 people visited Lori Wilson Park to sample wine and about two dozen ethnic foods and desserts prepared by chefs representing Lebanese, Chinese, Greek, Brazilian, Thai, Jamaican, Cuban, American, Colombian and other restaurants nationwide.

The goal was to raise at least $20,000 for Project Hunger, a grass-roots effort to feed Brevard County's needy.

Organizer Tony Hernandez declared the event, sparked three years ago by a conversation with his brother-in-law, "a success."

The Principal organizer and event manager Tony Hernandez stands by his statement to Florida Today as do photographs of the crowds, all of were required to pass through the gate. According to admission volunteers, over 300 paid admissions passed through in the first hour and continued at a brisk pace through out the day.The event was a solid success for it's first year and the group is already planning for next year, with ALL the same sponsors.
