98.7 is flipping on Friday 1/10 6pm

It seems that every potential new format we discuss for this market is deemed unprofitable.

That's why single-station operations, like this one, are not recommended. If you're going to take a risk (and every new format is a risk), it helps to have a cash cow in the cluster to help pay for it.

Interestingly, the consultant for Emmis on this is Mike McVay. His company was the consultant for a number of years for WFID in Puerto Rico, and that station is mostly English AC with a few Spanish pop / AC songs tossed in. Obviously, he does not get the importance of socio-economic levels in Spanish language audiences and format appeal.

Ramp covers smaller markets. They have every little detail of every person. Leaving-Retiring-Joining a station. It has to be astronomical for them to include NYC.
Remember, RAMP is mostly supported by the record companies and consultants and networked radio shows.

It's a fun read, but does have to be viewed with a special kind of lens.

Wasn't McVay previously a high mucky-muck at Cumulus in the previous decade? Like SVP of Programming, something analogous to that?

I was wondering if he had any involvement with non-Anglophone formats. Doesn't he still live in Cleveland or have a residence here? (Before becoming a consultant, McVay as PD relaunched WWWM "M105" as WMJI "Majic 105.7" in 1982 when it was still owned by Larry Robinson.)

As of 9 AM on Sunday 1/12 1190 AM is still dark. Are they just waiting for Monday morning to make the switch or are there technical difficulties?

So far, all of the commercials I’ve heard have been in English.
Are they local or national? I remember hearing English-language McDonald's and Geico ads on WPRX in Connecticut when I lived there three years ago. Everything else on that station -- DJs, music, local advertising -- was in Spanish.

Are they local or national?

Somebody posted a list of the commercials he heard on the dentist's board:

“Weight Loss Product
Discover Card
Chick-Fil-A
Optima Tax Relief
Same weight loss spot
Pneumonia Vaccine”

They appear to be all national. I asked earlier who is selling this format? Emmis doesn't own any other stations, so they don't have a sales staff. Perhaps McVay is also handling that? Or perhaps these are leftover from United Stations? I doubt they're going to hire local sales people for this temporary hobby station. I'm expecting McVay will blog about it at some point. That's what he did with the TJ Show.

I wonder if those are online fill ads or if those are actually going out over the air.

That's a good point. Once again, I ask WHO is selling this station? Is Jeff Smulyan doing it himself? I doubt it. Did he hire some out of work sales people? Maybe. Or is this leftover from his deal with United Stations? I think it's the latter. They don't do local sales. Did anyone hear local commercials on The TJ Show?

Could it be Cats, pulling the strings from afar while he firms up his purchase of the station?

And of all the posters in this thread, not one is within signal range of WEPN? Surely someone here can tell us what's going out over the transmitter.

If the future ads are all or mostly in English, it could indicate the station is targeted at second/third generation Spanish speakers. They could also pick up a decent amount of people that don’t speak the language, but enjoy the soft a/c music, and are OK with an occasional soft song in Spanish.

Ironically I'm hearing more and more Spanish ads on the English talk stations I listen to. I assume these are in error.

Unless there's some easier way I don't know about, you will have to listen (or record) the stream and the OTA signal and compare.

Yes, I’m aware of that, but I can’t receive the OTA signal. So I was hoping someone who can may be able to chime in with an answer.
