I've streamed this station a few times during the overnight hours when I can't sleep. I like a lot of the music. I think if I lived where I could pick this station up OTA I would give it a preset .

I also think it's hilarious that the legal ID mentions WLIB when they're off the air.

Because this is the format they're doing. One format, from one source, for one purpose. Once again, they're trying to get out of the radio business.

A DJ on 98.7? That's interesting. The station has been on autopilot since La Exitosa was launched on January 10. What made Emmis give a shift to a live female DJ?

For 10 weeks, it's been the same songs, same promos and same liners with the same prerecorded male voice. Same commercials, all in English, all national spots. even though they have Spanish versions that WEPN-FM isn't playing.

Same mistakes repeated over and over. I've heard "Live and Let Die" twice. Each time, the song begins so softly you can hardly hear it. Paul McCartney sings "When you were young and your heart was an open book" but he sounds like he's a mile from the microphone. Nobody has corrected the volume. When some songs were recorded into the system, whoever was doing it forgot to hit the cue tone until the songs faded to nearly inaudible. Other times, the cue tone was recorded too soon, with the final notes of this song buried under the next event.

It's like someone at Emmis said, OK, let's automate a popular new format on the station while we try to sell it. That way we can run some national spots on it and make a few dollars to pay the electric bill. (Lowe's, Chick-Fil-A, etc.) But once it's in place, everyone will go home. That is, until a live DJ did a cameo appearance.

It's tempting to call "pay the electric bill" a tired old trope, seeing as how there've been several posts here over the years explaining that it's not really a major expense, especially for a large corporation. But if that corporation really wants to leave the radio business, I suppose putting a live jock on the air in hopes of getting Progressive or O'Reilly's ads, or even timeshare escape scammers, makes sense. I still wonder when Emmis will start slashing its asking price to a level someone still interested in operating a commercial radio station in this moribund advertising market will be willing to pay. Turning in the license of a big NYC signal and just letting the station go dark still seems improbable, but what's the alternative if every other radio operator thinks Emmis is living in a dream world by asking what it's asking?

Once again, no one knows what the asking price is. The last interview with Smulyan on the subject was two years ago. Assuming the price is the same just because he hasn't done interviews makes a you-know-what out of you-know who.

My take is he had a 3 year deal with his investors. He now realizes he over promised them on the share price. So he's waiting for the deal to expire.

Under its amended articles of incorporation, Emmis has a three-year window to buy back its shares. In year one, Emmis would pay $6 per share, with that offer rising to $6.50 in year two, with the offer of $7.25 per share coming in year three.

That means he waits until next year. I think he can wait rather than pay $7 a share for stock that's now trading at $2.50.
