98.7 The Fan Signs On At 12 Noon

Cause Tampa is full of ex-yinzers and there are several Steelers Bars in the area

..with Gary Shelton on board, and the brokered 620 morning program, we congratulate the Tampa Bay Times on having total control over 30 hours of sports talk radio programming per week.....

I don't get why this bothers people in the Tampa market so much...You guys clearly don't understand that this is the trend in sports radio, to hire writers as talk show hosts.

It's not "control over" the radio shows by the papers at all... it's a second gig for the writers. It's a win-win... they are recognized names with opinions and access (and hopefully at least a reasonable command of the english language), and because they are full-time employees of the newspaper, the radio gig isn't for full-time money.

I don't think ESPN 98.7 in NY sees the Mike Lupica show as "giving the NY daily News total control over 2 hours a day..."

Wonder what will become of WQYK? Is their whack-a-mole signal useful enough to keep simulcasting or is there any other decent use??

Also, "12 noon" is redundant.

it's really simple partimer..people just want to complain..period. And if people aren't complaining here it seems to bring the board to a screeching hault. I'm tired of fighting them cause it does not matter. Listeners don't give a damn and it's good product for the most part. People keep pushing "local" like it's some sacred cow...MOVE ON..because you're gonna be left behind. If people were be all, end all "local" there would not be a Sirius/XM . If you wanna live in the past you'll go the way of your primeco cell phone circa 1998..bye,bye. Nothing is perfect and there'll be mistakes, just like someone local would do too....... :p

You're almost right bigrigger. 2nd rate local content, that's cheaply produced and poorly promoted will not beat excellent quality national programming. However, the fact is that the Tampa Bay area stations have been gutted of much their first rate local talent and what talent remains is stretched thin. Does that mean 98-7 will automatically win? No. Does it have a chance? Absolutely.

1. AM 1010 will eventually become a simulcast of the 24/7 CBS Sports Radio Network when it launches on January 2. So I suppose your question should be, "Wonder what will become of AM?"

2. Thanks for the time lesson, professor. :p

@PartTimer: Lupica actually hosts only one hour daily on ESPN 98.7 - it just feels like two hours! :D

Not as redundant as "the current temperature is..."

At least "12 noon" complements 12pm. so people don't think that is 12am, as in Midnight.

It's also not as redundant as "9:00 AM in the morning... " which I have heard numerous times in various settings.

YOU WIN! Of all the asanine things I've read on message boards over the years your comment was the most ignorant comment I've ever seen. Not to mention furthering my opinion that Steeler fans are some of the most arrogant fans in sports. A Steelers show in Tampa b'c there's a lot of West Virginia hillbillies down here. No that's ok. This is Tampa and we are quite comfortable with Tampa based talk. Give Duemig a call sometime and give him your idea. That my friend may be some of the best radio ever to go over Tampa airwaves.

My question about redundancy is... What is the alternative to "12 Noon"? 11 noon? 1 noon? Noon implies 12PM, just as midnight implies 12AM. The 12 is unnecessary. Those other words stand on their on.

Good (likely) call on WQYK. Or maybe "All Profanity" radio. Anything to tempt people to listen to 1010. Last time I drove up I-75 through Tampa Bay, I was amazed at the constant phasing going on on 1010.

"High Noon"

Interesting they are using the WFAN jingle format which most CBS-FM sports outlets do not.

Tampa has been a decent sports radio market since WFNS-910 tried it around 1990. (Whatever happened to Dave Campbell?)

It may have been a fleabag operation but a lot of people went through there - Nancy Donnellan ("The Fabulous Sports Babe"), Todd Wright, Paul Porter, Doug Miles, Rick Serro, Mark Hagerty, Steve Duemig, and Scot Brantley.

Chris Thomas was still the best Tampa has ever seen.

Nanci will be fine because she won't be bored.

Not sure of what the studio is like or what mics are used, however, on one of the mics you can hear the room when the person on the mic is off mic.

It's really embarrassing isn't it? Radio sinking to new lows

WHFS-------"-We're Home Field Sports'-------------and like The Bone------its coming off my presets unless they do a Steelers show

If you want a steelers show, move the hell back to pittsburgh. We dont serve your kind on the air around here. It's bad enough Duemig has that moron "green bay bob" on the air every week

Why do they have 2 people for each of the shows, at least on the dayparts? Booger is really bringing down / slowing down Todd Wright, and I dont see any point in teaming gary shelton with justin palowski, those 2 I dont see how they will bring anything to the table as a tandem

It is pretty obvious why they have "teams" of hosts as opposed to individual hosts. A talk program, especially sports, generates more interest as an interaction between the humans. There are not enough consistent callers for a one-host 3 hour 5-day a week (1-3-5) local show.

The few that are able to do a quality 1-3-5 talk show, get paid the big bucks.

The positive is that it is local around the clock. Can't really relate to the Fox network stuff on DAE. The negative is that a successful sports talk station MUST have play by play rights to a major league team in the market. Also, they really need to be aggressive with the audio. Studio mics and callers sound blah. It is very wimpy. Also have heard some needless babble from time to time that, sorry to say, is un-interesting. Couple guys on the weekend were as uninspiring as can be imagined. Gee, let's get on the radio and talk. Dinger is a good fit. Who can dislike a enforcer who played for the Lightning. Otherwise........ not hearing any exciting image liners...or any real reason to switch...
