98.7 WKFY Predictions

John MacCormack said:
When Codcomm launches WKFY, I was thinking that their focus might be on the older audience, since they had launched WHYA, Y101, which tagets the younger audience on the cape. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Good prediction, John! The capecodonline.com story cited by reelyreal makes it clear the target audience is 50+

No stream, but they're looping Patti Page's "Old Cape Cod" this weekend. They're aiming for the 50+ listener.

This sounds interesting:

In a press release, general manager Tim Levesque said Koffee 98.7 will feature a mix of “oldies, classic album cuts and modern artists loved by older listeners,” including Adele, Michael Buble, Bruno Mars and Adam Levine.

Here's the full story:

That sounds like the music mix on some of the BBC local radio outlets I sample over the Internet. Adele followed by Sinatra followed by the Beatles followed by Michael Buble. It will be interesting to see if such a format, which probably won't draw many listeners of interest to national advertisers, can attract enough mom-and-pops to make a go of it. The end of summer, though, is a curious time to be launching a station on the Cape. All the clam shack/marina-type ads will be drying up before long.

5:57 AM and Patti Page is still at it.......

6AM - Fox News Radio
6:02 - Bread "Make It With You"

"Koffee 98.7" is on the air.

A station like this in a small crowded market wouldn't really be on the radar of national ad buyers no matter what the format. That's what makes the format smart. This is aimed at cape year-rounders. Those seasonal advertisers don't matter, either. This could be a really interesting and smart format for a crowded cape radio dial.

Interesting format. Question the choice of Fox News especially considering the political demographics of the county.

I just heard "My Eyes Adored You" into "Heartbreak Hotel" into Coldplay's "Clocks."

DEFINITELY not hearing that anywhere else.

I know that WXTK has ABC News, is anyone else on the cape using CBS Radio News or AP Radio News?

WOCN uses AP Radio news.

Provincetown an obvious exception (and not that 98.7 is sending too much power up that way with WBZ-FM), aren't the communities of the Cape among the most politically conservative in the state?

So far is it just a jukebox with a wide-ranging hodge-podge of music? Or is there any sign that it will have DJs, local news, any kind of personality or community interaction?

The broad playlist and older-skewing music would seem a natural fit with MOR-style (remember that?) hosts and lots of local information. Of course, that would require actual people, not just a server and some software.

Check it out at Koffee.cc

Local DJs, some tracked, but local. Codcomm has a really solid community presence thus far, so there's no reason to expect that they won't continue that. Local news on the website is aggregated from other sources. The on-air product sounds like it'll be a great mix of music and personality with local flavor, with a little news and weather mixed in.

Older listeners everywhere tend to be more conservative, although there are always individual exceptions (myself, for example). Fox News makes perfect sense for a station that's going to have much of its listenership in 55+.

They must be blowing through their library in one huge loop. I see the "last songs played" on the website are currently "Blue Monday" and "Dance With My Father," the same two songs I heard on my first listen Monday morning. I'm guessing "My Sweet Lord" is next.

Hearing radio and TV veteran Bill Stephens on the morning show today, a true pro. Heard an afternoon jock named "Merilee" yesterday, has a nice voice and is very pleasant on the air.

Is David O'Leary voice tracking at night on WKFY due to his morning show on WMJX? Wonder where he produces his evening WKFY show?
